A person shares a story about being approached by a persistent salesperson who tries to sell them a coat and later a boat. The salesperson turns out to be someone who used to sell things on the beach and found success by pretending to be a leech. They explain that they hated selling but found it easier when they saw it as acting. By putting on an act, they were able to make sales and avoid feeling disappointed. The psychology of selling. I once went for a swim at my favorite beach when I was approached by a rather ambitious leech. The leech said he wanted to sell me a coat that was especially designed for life on a boat with a waterproof liner and a rather handy hood and said to me, your coat looks rather good. He said I should buy one, that was his advice, and that I would be amazed at its incredible price. I said thank you, but I'm not really after a coat and I rarely venture anywhere on a boat. A week later I saw the leech again, this time selling a boat to a hen. The hen said last time you sold me a coat, now you really want to sell me a boat? But that was the last time that we saw the leech as he took up a career to lecture and teach. Until the day I came across one of his talks when he explained a few things with black board and chalks. He said he used to sell things on a beach and he had the most success dressed up as a leech. Selling was easier than for centipedes and as a leech you could get better leads. So the leech wasn't at all whom I thought, but his coats and boats were heavily bought. I asked really who would care if I was a dog dressed up as a bear? Why on earth would it help me to sell if I was in a disguise and no one could tell? He said he hated selling, but if he saw it as an act, he could make of himself a vital pact. The pact was that if he sold what he had, he wouldn't go home all broke and sad. And if he pretended it was a fun job to do, he could put on the act to see the day through. So that was the centipede dressed up as a leech who put on an act to sell at the beach.
