Cancer is a disease where cells divide uncontrollably. It starts from a single cell and its daughter cells, which undergo mutations and genetic changes. This leads to abnormal cell growth and the formation of a benign tumor. Some cells in the tumor undergo further genetic changes and become a malignant tumor, which is cancer. The tumor then spreads throughout the body, invading tissues and entering the bloodstream, causing metastasis and eventually death. So, Dr. Noma, could you give us a rundown on the basis of cancer? Of course. Yeah. So, cancer is a disease characterized by uncontrollable cell division, and it normally develops from a single cell and its subsequent daughter cells, which undergo a sequence of mutations and genetic alterations leading to abnormal cell growth. It starts by the cells forming a benign tumor, a precancerous mass that does not spread throughout the body. Then, some of these cells in the benign tumor undergo additional genetic changes. They lose normal growth regulation and become a malignant tumor, which is cancer. Once this malignant tumor starts to spread throughout the body by invading adjacent tissues and entering the bloodstream, the process is called metastasis, which ends up killing the organism.
