The speaker discusses their thoughts on the NBA draft picks, including Victor Wambinyama to the Spurs, the Blazers potentially trading Damian Lillard, Ahmed Thompson to the Rockets, Anthony Black to the Magic, and other picks. They also mention potential trade possibilities and their opinions on the players' abilities. Overall, they believe there were some good picks and express excitement for the upcoming NBA season. and make sure, test, test, test. Yeah, that's fine. Yep, or I was thinking of maybe a better way to do the clap is if we do like count to five, like one, two, three, four, five, and just like count and just clap on five. That way, yeah, like that. I don't know, that way you get an idea for the pace. Let's just try and see how it works. All right, I think it was a good draft for some, bad draft for others, but overall, it was a fun time. I had a great time yesterday watching. Oh, yeah. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Okay, so what we want to do is kind of just give you guys our knee jerk reaction while it's kind of fresh in our minds. It just happened yesterday. So right now, we just want to go through briefly, pick by pick, and just give you each of our thoughts on them. So without further ado, let's get started. Number one needs no explanation. Victor Wambinyama to the Spurs. We all knew it was happening. Best pick. It was so obvious. Yeah, he's going to be awesome. It's bonkers. Oh, yeah. Absolutely. Number two is where the draft started. Yeah, I know. That's what really, like, okay, that's how you know Scoot was the better guy. I mean, we all knew it, but I guess they didn't know it. The Charlotte front office didn't know it. I totally agree. I think, like I said, Miller. Yeah, he'll be good, but I like Scoot better. And it seems like the city of Charlotte does, too. Yep. Yep. I mean, I love Scoot. I have no doubts about him. I just know that the Blazers got some moves they have to make because they're not going to go into the season with Dame, Scoot, Sharp, and Simons. Like, that's too many guards, too many talented guards. They definitely got to make some moves. Like, there's talks about them reaching over to the Pelicans and bringing Zion over, which I actually think would be really, really cool to see him and Dame together. But who knows? I've heard that they shut down the Dame talks, and that could change on the daily. But right now, I'd say I'd be surprised if Scoot remains a Blazer. So we'll see. I don't know. Well, if they were truthful about saying that they've shut down the Dame talks, the Dame trade talks, I'm like, well, then that just tells me that they're trying to trade. Obviously, they'd like to hang on to Scoot. But if they want to build around Dame, they're going to have to. Right, but and I agree with you. I think they should trade Dame, but that's just, that's not what the offices are saying. So I don't know. They just, yep, we'll see. All right, pick number four, your guy, Ahmed Thompson to the Houston Rockets. This is, I mean, expected by most people. I think this is a fantastic pick. Let me hear your thoughts. Oh, yeah. You should, yeah. Yeah, this is, yeah, this is a very young squad under a much, much better coach now. So I feel much better about this Houston organization. I think Ahmed and the rest of the team is going to thrive. Yep. Yeah, I like the fit. You know, I think a wing is kind of what they needed, because they already got two great young guards with Cade, as long as he stays healthy, and Jaden Ivey. So I like the move. I like Asar a lot as a prospect. You already know that Ahmed is going to be calling him number five for a long time. Because, yeah, but I mean, that's just really cool to see him going back to back in the draft. But I mean, yep. I mean, it was everyone thought for the longest time that this would be Cam Whitmore. And well, as we turn it, we proved to be very wrong on that, as we'll see him much, much later. But overall, good pick for the Pistons. I think Asar will be good. I think he's great for the team. Ah, missed, yeah. All right, coming into pick number six. We got Anthony Black to Orlando. And this was a little surprising, given that it's known that Orlando is really dying for some shooters. And Anthony Black is, well, not the best shooter. So I was a little bit surprised by this pick. What about you? Uh-huh. Okay. Uh-huh. Yeah, he'll be, he'll be a great playmaker, especially with Frost. I mean, he'll be a great playmaker, especially with Frost. I mean, he'll be a great playmaker, especially with Frost. I mean, he'll be a great playmaker, especially with Frost. I mean, he'll be a great playmaker, especially with Frost. I mean, he'll be a great playmaker, especially with Frost. I mean, he'll be a great playmaker, especially with Frost. I mean, he'll be a great playmaker, especially with Frost. I mean, he'll be a great playmaker, especially with Frost. I mean, he'll be a great playmaker, especially with Frost. I mean, I think, especially now that Washington's really kind of blowing it up a bit, I think he could blossom into something good. Yeah. I agree with that, yeah. Yep, yes, he certainly was. Yep, yes, he certainly was. Yep, yes, he certainly was. Yep, yes, he certainly was. Yep, yes, he certainly was. Yep, yes, he certainly was. Yep, yes, he certainly was. Yep, yes, he certainly was. Yep, yes, he certainly was. Yep, yes, he certainly was. Yep, yes, he certainly was. Yep, yes, he certainly was. Yep, yes, he certainly was. Yep, yes, he certainly was. I think he's going to contribute right away. Great, great pick for the Pacers right here. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Probably. Yeah, probably. Yep, and you know me. I loved Hendricks for a long time. I was thinking he's probably coming to my team in our Dynasty League because I got the seventh overall pick. That may or may not happen now given Whitmore's slide, but, you know, we'll find out in a month when we do it. But either way, Hendricks himself, like you said, plays awesome defense, is a great shooter. He's got a good frame who will probably fill out a little more because I think 6'9", 210 pounds or something like that, so he could probably put on a little bit more muscle, but he's an explosive athlete, high energy, and I think the jazz can make it work. So overall, really, really good pick for Utah right here. All right, and then number 10, we had what was supposed to be – this was supposed to – who was this supposed to – or – oh, okay, yep, Dallas, yeah, who ended up trading with the Thunder, correctly. Yeah, I'm looking at the ESPN draft board right here. That's right, yep. But they did need more guards, right? Yeah. Yeah, oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I think Giddy is the most likely to get moved. I mean, SGA is, like I said, locked in. There is not a chance in the world he gets moved without a tremendous haul, but I don't even think he's just like – he's a young star. You can't ask for anything better, yeah. Pretty much, yeah. So he's locked on that team. So Giddy is definitely much more likely to go. It just – we'll just have to watch Wallace as he develops and just we'll have to make that decision, are we more comfortable moving forward with him or Giddy? And I think, yeah, Wallace could be coming for that spot. I mean, he's such a talented player. Yeah. Yes, sir, I agree. All right, let's go to pick 11, the Orlando Magic again. Picked Jett Howard. Now this is a pick I'm going to be honest I just didn't like because you already know I'm not a big Jett Howard guy, but – and we do know that the Magic needs shooting. And, okay, they did get that because I'll say Jett Howard is a good shooter, but there are so many other good shooters in this draft. Like I would have rather had Jordan Hawkins, Grady Dick, which everyone thought he was going to go here at 11, but Grady Dick fell a couple more picks. I don't know, maybe even Bryce Sensabaugh because, I mean, Jett Howard's not really a good defender either and neither is Sensabaugh. And so I figured at that point, like, well, you might as well take – but I think Sensabaugh has the higher offensive upside. So, yes, they got a shooter, but I just thought they could have gotten a better shooter. What are your thoughts? Yes. No, me neither. Yes, he's a good secondary playmaker, who knows. But, yes, I thought this was also a bit of a reach. Yes. Yes. I agree, and this was one of my very few mock drafts picks that I got correct. I think Derek Lively fits in. Yes, right, but we only got a few. But, yes, perfect fit. You know, he's a low usage player, which works out great next to the highest usage player, Luka Doncic. They now have a hole filled, which was the, you know, lack of defense and allowing their opponents to score a crap ton of points. But now, any time their opponents blow by, Luka or Kyrie, they've got Derek Lively there to block the shot. So I think this is going to be great for this Dallas team. Fantasy-wise, he's going to rack up a ton of rebounds, a ton of blocks. Offensively, like, I still don't think he's going to be a high usage player, and he's probably just kind of going to get a lot of rebounds. He's a low usage player, and he's probably just kind of going to get a lot of putbacks, layups, and maybe some stuff out of the pick and roll. But, I mean, offensively, I think the upside's there. It just needs to come along. And if and when it does, like, he'll be very, very dangerous fantasy and NBA-wise. All right, pick 13 to Toronto. They took the big dick, Grady. And, honestly, yeah, this is a good pick, Grady Dick. One of the best shooters in the class. Yeah, I think he just fits that guard position for Toronto. What do you think? Ah. Yep, good feel for the game, good playmaking. Yeah, I like it. All right, pick 14. They took the big dick, Grady Dick. One of the best shooters in the class. What do you think? I think he just fits that guard position for Toronto. What do you think? I think he just fits that guard position for Toronto. I like it. They need a better training staff to keep them healthy. And CJ, CJ McCollum. Right. Yeah, I mean, with all the youth on the Pelicans, you know, except for CJ, of course, being the veteran that leads them, I mean, who knows how much longer he's going to be there for. So I think having Hawkins there to kind of fill in that, have an elite shooter to fill that in once he leaves, I think it kind of makes sense for him. I mean, well, I mean, what they really need is for Zion and Ingram to both stay healthy, because those two just need to get their crap figured out. And if that happens, they're going to be a strong team. But, yeah, I think he can fill in that elite shooter role. So, I mean, it's a decent pick. Yeah. What do we got next? 15 to the Hawks. We've got one of my favorite guys, Kobe Bufkin. Now, I mean, I already know they've got their guards figured out with Trey Young and DeJuanse Murray. But, I mean, that still, I think the talent here was kind of too good to let fall any further. Bufkin is just a very well-rounded, just damn good basketball player. He's just got good feel for the game. He's a good finisher around the rim. He can play make. He can kind of just do a bit of everything. He doesn't have too many glaring weaknesses, and he's just going to keep getting better and better and better. I think he's a great pick for Atlanta. Yep. I agree. So we'll see. I know we'll see what role he carves out. Maybe he'll just be like king of the second unit. But yeah, we'll see. Yeah. Keontae George, he's not, not a guy I'm very fond of, but I think here for the Jazz, it actually makes sense. Because you already said he's got Sexton and Clarkson in front of him. And I think those are two guys. I mean, he could eventually come for that spot. He's a very elite scorer. I mean, outside of that, he doesn't do a whole lot. Maybe just, maybe a secondary playmaker and things like that. So, I mean, in terms of, so fantasy wise, yeah, not my favorite guy, but I think he fits in well with this Jazz team. So overall, I think it's actually a pretty good pick. And like you said, we both nailed this in our mock draft. So two points for us. Yep. All right. Pick 17. We have your boy, Jalen Hood Shafino to the Lakers. Give me your thoughts on this. Big Shafino guy. Right. Absolutely, yeah. Definitely. And I think we both would have rather liked to see him go a pick earlier to Utah. I think that just would have been so good. Like you said, not too much in front of him, so he can kind of carve out that role early. And having those three Giants down low to run pick and rolls, I mean, that's just a pick and roll fantasy. But, right, right. But like you said, this is still a good landing spot for him. You know, having AD to run pick and rolls, because, you know, that's his bread and butter. That's going to be awesome. And like you said, the mentorship, he's got a good frame, great interior scorer. I really like this pick for the Lakers. I think Hood Shafino's got a bright future. Now pick 18. This is one that I was very surprised to hear. And I do still think is a pretty big reach. The Miami heat selected Jaime Hawkins Jr. Out of UCLA. And I don't know. Like I didn't have this guy mocked in the first round. I don't think you, you didn't either a lot of, yeah, a lot of mocks. I've seen not really first. I mean, he was kind of like an early second round guy, but they just Miami out of nowhere. And I'm just thinking, well, why, what is, I mean, what does he bring that like a Leonard Miller doesn't bring or like, cause I would much rather have Leonard Miller than Jaime Hawkins. So I don't know. I just, I mean, it's fine, but I don't love it. Yep. And I think, you know, that right there calling him a role player, I don't see his ceiling being that high, especially for fantasy, but he could just, yeah. Be that guy to fill in for what they need. But yeah, but I mean, I, there are still other guys that would have taken, but yeah, he, but like you said, his mentality and, you know, his hardworking ethic, it fits the heat. So it's all right. I could, I guess I can live with it. Yeah. Yep. Yeah. This was a real, real blow to his short-term fantasy outlook for sure. I mean, he's a guard playing behind Steph Curry, Chris Paul, clay Thompson. I mean, Wiggins is a wing. He can play shooting guard or small forward. So it's just, yeah, he's not going to get a ton of minutes in the short term. So not a great fit here. I think Podjenski is a very talented player, but yeah, it was kind of, I was kind of hoping for a better landing spot for him, but overall, very talented player, but kind of got screwed a little on landing spot. Yep. Pick 20 is where we have arguably the biggest story of the draft. The Houston Rockets select Cam Whitmore, who for so long was projected to be a top five pick in this draft. In fact, when the Rockets were thinking about picking them, they were thinking about doing it with pick four, not pick 20, but apparently scouts got, got scared with some medical concerns. Apparently he had some bad workouts and bad interviews, and they just obviously really scared people off to where they just didn't really want to take a chance on this potential top five talent until he fell all the way to pick 20. So I just thought, wow, what a slide. I mean, what are your thoughts? Yeah. I think, I think they let him slide too far. And I know Houston, Houston was thrilled to get him at 20. And also, I mean, hell of a draft for Houston. I mean, I think that's a huge W for them. And I think, I think Whitmore is going to fill in fit in well with this young Rockets team. You know, I always thought for him to reach the ceiling, he's kind of got to be the guy. And I don't know if he, I don't know if he will on the Rockets yet, but I think there'll, this will definitely give him a chance to grow, especially under a better coach. And in terms of fantasy, I mean, I mean, the upside is there. I still see it with him. And I was still taking over a handful of guys that went in front of them, but yeah, definitely gave us a kind of a lot to think about. It's you gotta, we kinda got to analyze those red flags that scared all those scouts. Yeah. Yep. I like both of these picks. I think clowny fits that versatile big that, you know, every NBA team would like, and they already got their big with Claxton, but, but I think Connie would fit in well, fit in well next to him. He's a bit, he's young. He's a little bit of a project and a little bit raw, but I mean, that's where that's where the youth comes into play. And as far as Derrick Whitehead for me, biggest thing for him is just can he get back to what he was? I mean, he's had two foot surgeries and that's undoubtedly takes, puts a hit on his athleticism and explosiveness. So, I mean, he's still a very good shooter, but, and we'll just see if he can kind of get back to full strength. And if he can, I think he's going to be a very high level player. All right. 23 to the Blazers. They got Chris Murray out of Iowa twin brother of Keegan Murray. This is a good pick. I think he's, he's just going to be that role player. I mean, his, his college stats are great. You know, he did, he scored a bunch, got a ton of rebounds, got a bunch of assists. He's not as everyone agrees. He's not as skilled as his brother Keegan. And he is one of the, one of if not the oldest guys in the draft, he's 23 years old. So there's, so that does take some years of development away, take some years off his prime. And so that's, you know, people always ask like, well, why is that a big deal? Just because he's older. I'm like, well, that's fewer years in your prime and less time to develop. That's why. But I mean, when it's late in the draft at that point, if the talent's there, they'll just, they'll just take you regardless of your age. But I think he'll fill a role for the Blazers. He's not going to be the number one guy, obviously, but he doesn't need to be. So yeah, not bad. Yep. Yeah, I think so. I think so. And okay. Then pick 25 to the Grizzlies was Marcus Sasser out of Houston. And oh, this is, this was a name I wasn't really expecting to hear at this, at this time. And to be honest, I didn't know a whole lot of Sasser going in. I mean, what are your thoughts? Oh, I think so. Let me see. It did get traded. Yeah. Okay. There you go. Yeah, it was Detroit. Yeah. I mean, I, I didn't think much of it. Just like how I didn't think much of, yeah. Yeah. Just like I'm not very high on the next guy who went to the Pacers, Ben Shepard out of Belmont. That's it. Yeah. And okay. That might be, and I, and I know his free throw shooting is a little bit of a concern, which, but I mean, I think, I don't know. I mean, elite shooters. I mean, there's, I feel like you should be able to work on that, but who knows if his, if that comes around and shooting increases, then, well, yeah, I think he could be, it could be something good this late in the draft, but I don't know. Ben Shepard. Yeah, we'll see. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, this late in the draft, you're right. Might as well just take a swing on the upside. And I know he was battling through an injury and his numbers, and I guess that may have affected his numbers a bit, because the shooting numbers weren't that good. And neither of his peripheral stats were that great either. And none of them jumped off the page, but I mean, he, he was a top recruit for a while. And so I think they just, they just want to, you know, take a chance on that and see it blossom, hopefully. But this late in the draft, I think it's a decent take. Yep. Let's see. 28 to the Utah Jazz. We got Bryce Sensabaugh, who is arguably the one, definitely one of the best offensive players in this draft, but everyone, everyone knows the big question with him is his defense, because he cannot play defense to save his life. And if he's a liability in the NBA, then that's going to definitely affect his opportunities. Can it improve? Yeah, it can. I hope it does. But for me, it has to, otherwise, because if you, I mean, if you can't stop the other team from scoring, I mean, the coach isn't going to want you on the floor. And I mean, and they already got a, well, they got Keontae George earlier, so they already got a, so they got some scorers now. And so I wonder, so he could fill in a bench role, I guess, for the time being. And then who knows what's going to happen in the future. I think that would be good for him, especially if he can prove himself guarding the second unit, then maybe in time he can get moved up to the, to the first unit. But yeah, pretty good pick at 28. Yep. Yeah, I agree. Yep. Yeah. Strother, he's pretty good pick. Again, one of the weaknesses with him is everyone said he's like a much weaker defender than most, but, but I mean, he's got good size, he can shoot. And so I think he can, yeah, just maybe fill a bench role for the time being. So yeah, decent pick. All right. And closing out the first round of the draft was the LA Clippers picking Kobe Brown. And yeah, I just didn't really know what to make of this pick. I mean, he was, he was not really a name that I was really looking out for. I know some, I know he's got a small or some people who are really, really big on him, but I don't know. What do you think? Yeah. Oh yeah. Big time. Right. I mean, being a forward, I mean, when you got two star forwards right there with Paul George and Kawhi Leonard, even though they do struggle to stay healthy, I mean, yeah. So he's going to be a reserve role. I mean, most of these guys drafted this late are going to be reserves off the bench. So I think he's going to be a reserve role. I think he's going to be a reserve role. Yeah. So he's going to be a reserve role. I mean, most of these guys drafted this late are going to be reserves off the bench, but I mean, that doesn't mean they still can't make the most of their opportunities and show off some upside. But I mean, as far as fantasy wise, I mean, a lot of these guys that go outside the lottery usually come off the bench and that's just, that's just the way it goes, but that doesn't mean the talent isn't there. Absolutely. Thank you guys again for joining us for episode three of the off the dribble fantasy basketball podcast. We hope to see you guys next time. See ya.
