Cody Snyder is a guest on the Level Up with Sean Myers podcast. He owns an aquarium maintenance business and is a coach at Carlson Gracie Houston. He is passionate about his community and loves leading and teaching others. Cody has three kids and has been married for seven years. He started his business as a side hustle and grew it over the years by providing excellent service and building relationships with his customers. He faced struggles in the early years but remained committed and accountable to his clients. Cody's mindset and dedication have led to his success in the business for 17 years. Cody Snyder, welcome to the show, brother. Thanks for having me, man. Absolutely, dude. Well, I'm glad you made it in today. I appreciate the time, energy, and effort today. So, what did you hear about that you were going to be on the Level Up with Sean Myers podcast? Man, I'm honestly stoked, you know? Yeah. I've always looked up to you, Sean. I've appreciated all of our conversations over the almost two decades we've known each other now, thanks to our wives. That's right. They connected us, didn't they? Yeah, they sure did, man. So, they connected us, and I'm forever grateful for it, man. Every conversation we've ever had has been amazing, and I've always learned. Yeah, no doubt, man. So, tell us a little bit about yourself. Yeah, so I'm Cody Snyder. I'm owner of Aquarium Maintenance LLC, as well as Limitless Aquariums. I think in the last six months, I could finally label myself as an actual entrepreneur instead of just a self-employed guy. But, yeah, I love jujitsu. I've been in jujitsu for about 15 years now. I'm actually a coach at Carlson Gracie Houston, right there in Conroe. And, yeah, man, I love my community. Love leading and teaching people, and ultimately just being a helping hand, man, in any way I can be. Amen. How many kids do you have? I've got three kids. Three kids? Yep. Fourteen. Started high school, started junior high, and elementary school. That'd be driving soon. Yeah, man, two years. And, honestly, I don't get nervous a lot. I'm nervous about that. I am nervous. Should we say a prayer real quick? Yeah. I say a prayer every night with them about it. So, yeah, I love it, man. But, ultimately, man, my kids are growing, and I get to have the honor to lead them. I think that in itself is such a beautiful thing. Yeah. Speaking of that, I also wanted to ask you, too, how long have you been married? So I've been married for seven years now. Okay. Been together for 13. Thirteen years, married seven, three kids, business owner, jiu-jitsu. Is there anything that you don't do? I don't think so. Not that I can think of off the top of my head. Okay. Well, that inspires me just alone. Yeah, man. And this is probably for another episode, but one of the things, because we don't have kids, but I would love to pick your brain on kids. It's a journey, man. Yeah. It is a journey. And it's definitely a self-development level that is next level. Yeah. For sure. I hear you on that. Well, cool, man. Shifting gears a little bit, so how did you get into – so you have a beautiful, thriving business, right? You're an aquarium maintenance business. I know you just started up a new venture as well. So how did you get into the aquarium business? So back in high school, my oldest brother had some years on me. He's 16 years older than me. He started up an aquarium store, selling exotic fish and fish tanks. I was 14, started working for him, worked for him all through high school, turned 18 and said, you know what, I've seen a calling for people just constantly coming in, wanting people to come out and clean their aquariums. I said, man, I can do that. I've been doing it for five years now. Here, what's the difference? There is no difference. Just going to be at their home. So I started making business cards. Actually, my first advertising ever was Yellow Pages, man. Really? It was $13. At the time, it was a lot, right, because I was making like $5 an hour. So $13, I was like, man, I'm going to do this. So I put my phone number in there. Next thing you know, I started getting calls. I started getting calls, and I was also handing my card out while working for my brother. So I had this revenue right away being able to, hey, here you go. Here's my card. Here's my card. Were you full-time doing this, or was this a side hustle starting out? It was a side hustle for sure. Were you doing full-time at the time? I was working for my brother. Working for your brother. Yeah. Okay. And who was your first customer? My first customer was a walk-in. Yes. Her name was Tina, and I had her for about 12 years, actually. Wow. And it was so crazy. The first time I ever walked into her house, she lived in this million-dollar house. And I was so blown away, like, wow, I can't believe this. I was in a nervous wreck. I'm like, I have to do my best job. No joke. I spent four hours there cleaning an aquarium. And just to put that into perspective, I can clean an aquarium now in about 30 to 45 minutes. So I spent four hours there by myself, and she handed me my first check for $50. And I was blown away because I literally had to work a 10-hour shift all day to make that $50. So I was like, wow. And immediately that day I said, you know what? If I start breaking this down and I do a good job, I could sign these people up for monthly maintenance. If I can get them on board, man, if I got 10 customers, I'm making $500. So I started doing the math. And that was like right away I'm thinking, hey, I can start building something here. And that's what lit it up. Wow. I love that. So did you always know that you wanted to own your own business? Or did you always know you wanted to be an entrepreneur? I did. I mean, in all honesty, I knew I was different than a lot of people that I was surrounded around, right? Friends, family members. I always had this yearning for working for myself, really. I didn't like the way, no offense to my brother, I love him to death, but I didn't like the way he operated. I didn't like the way he ran the business, the way he treated his employees. You probably learned from that too, right? I learned. Because we're all imperfect action takers. Absolutely, man. I mean, at the end of the day, and just that, right? I have over the years as well transformed into a totally different person from the way I was 10 years ago running my business. It's night and day now. But yeah, I learned a lot through him. But I always knew. I always knew that I had something in me that I could set up my own life. I didn't need to live this basic life of 9 to 5 job. It just wasn't for me because, especially at that time, I was like, man, I can work 16, 18 hours straight. I had it in me. Of course, I have a different perspective on that now. But at that time, I'm full throttle. I can outwork anybody. No one can outwork me. Have you ever read the E-Myth by Michael E. Gerber? You have the technician, the manager, and the entrepreneur. What I'm hearing you say is that you started off as a technician. Oh, yeah. Isn't that what most businesses do? I was a technician for over a decade. Yeah, right. Working in it. I was so scared to hire someone else because I was always so scared to lose a customer. I knew that no one else would do as good of a job as me. Yeah, yeah. Which we could dive into that on maybe a different episode. That's right. What I say, most businesses fail, right? That one to three-year mark, the statistics don't lie. So starting out, you were excited. You were like, man, you're sitting here weighing your cost out. What's your revenues coming in? So what were your struggles early and often? And how did you get through those struggles the first 12 months? I would say year to three years, right, is that you're in the grind. You're in the trenches. So you went from your first handful of struggles. And how did you get through that? Just kept my head up, right? At the end of the day, when the problems arise, I looked at it, what's the best way to approach it? Yeah. And I stayed in communication with clients, right? When there was ever a problem, it was I never backed away from it. I always approached it in a way that my customers knew I would always be there. Yeah. And it was actually a beautiful thing because they would never downgrade me. They would say, hey, Cody, this is my problem. And I would say, I'm on my way. Yeah. Right? I was always there. I always showed up and showed out. Yeah. And what do you think? Let's stay on this for a second. What do you think it was that why did they trust you? Because people do business with who they know, like, and trust. Yeah. So what I'm hearing you say is it was a relationship piece. Yeah, absolutely. I think it was just the accountability. They knew they could count on me. Yeah. And they knew that no matter what happened to their aquarium, Cody was there. Yeah. Right? And it was if I had to show up at 9 o'clock at night or 2 o'clock in the morning, I mean, there were so many times that, hey, my aquarium's leaking. It wasn't my fault that their aquarium started leaking. However, I was there. Yeah. I was just a phone call away. I was willing to do any and everything to take care of them. Yeah. So how many years did that, how many years would you say, because you've been in business, how long? 17 years now. 17 years. So how many years did you do that and have that mindset? So I would say at least 8 to 9 of it. 8 to 9 of it. Yeah. Which is incredible because typically almost 85% of businesses fail within that 8 to 10 years, I believe it is. Yeah. Well, I had a sense of, look, these people paid my bills. Yeah. They provided my food, my roof over my head. Yeah. You know, all of these things for me to survive on this earth, right? So I had a gratitude of, you know, hey, this person's paying me for a service. Yeah. And they'll continue to call me back. Yeah. Man, I'm willing to do anything for them. Yeah. You know, that was my mindset. That's what kept you showing up. Absolutely. Yeah. You know, because we know, look, life can be hard sometimes, right? Right. And especially with the mindset I had back then, I didn't have anything. Yeah. I had nothing. And that was another reason that I went full throttle with it is because- What do you mean you didn't have anything? I didn't have no liabilities. I had no home. The only thing I owned was a truck. Okay. So your expenses and overhead was- I had no kids. I had no shop. I had no insurance. I had nothing. It was literally a couple of buckets and a hose. Yeah. You know? And I was literally toting, hand-toting five-gallon buckets to fill a 200-gallon aquarium, you know? Yeah. Whereas now I've got pumps and trucks and stuff that will do it in a quarter of the time, you know? Yeah. So- So shifting gears a little bit, how long have you been doing jujitsu? So jujitsu, I'm right at 15 years. I actually got promoted last night with my first degree. Congratulations. Yeah. Thank you. That's awesome, man. An accomplishment. So it takes three years to get your first stripe as a black belt. Three years. It took me 11 years, a little over 11 years to receive my black belt, and then three years to get my first degree. So- We're giving an air high-five right now. Yeah. That's awesome, man. That is incredible. So you've been doing it for 11 years, right? Almost 15. So basically you've run this congruent with your business. Yes. Right? So tell us about that a little bit. How has jujitsu played a role as far as mindset-wise in your business? Yeah. I would say to keep it short and sweet is it humbled me, right? Humble. Okay. Being able to go in there with a group of guys and girls that, you know, you always felt they had your back. You know, we all face things in life. That's right. But when we step onto those mats, man, it's literally next level because all of it gets washed away for that hour or two hours that you're training. I'm sure you can relate when you go and work out and you're sweating and those endorphins are going. You're able to relieve all the stress of family, business, your employees, your customers. I mean, the list goes on and on of the things that we stress about. It was able to relieve that. And I realized that early on when I went the first time ever and, you know, I was a 200-pound guy and I was a gym rat, right? I worked out every day. Yeah. I worked out hard. But when I started jujitsu and I had a guy half my size about yank my arm off of me, I was like, wow, it really drew me in. And not just because of that, but just my freedom in my head. I was able to relieve all the things that I worried about throughout the day. I was able to just exhaust myself in a way that I could take a deep breath at the end of the day. I could close my eyes knowing that I gave today all I had. Yeah. And that's why I've continued with it. And it is not only done that, but it's grown me into now being a leader and actually teaching the sport that I love so much. I love that, man. So what I'm hearing you say is like it was almost like an escape. You know how like most, like all of us, we all need an escape to some degree, right? Whether it's working out, cycling, hiking, traveling, jujitsu, right? So you need that one to two hours. That is so powerful, man. And so you've just leveraged that over the last several years, 15 plus years. Yep. Yep. And it's been an amazing journey because you go through injuries, right? And there were so many times I felt, oh, you know, I'm not going to go today because my knees messed up. Because you didn't feel like it. But I would still go. Yeah. It was incredible that I would learn more when I was injured than I would when I wasn't. Why did you go? What made you go? My team. Your team. Yeah, absolutely. You know, the accountability. Let's stay on that. Tell us about that. Accountability is everything, right? Yes. Just as when I hired you as a coach. Yes. One of the main reasons is because I knew I needed somebody that was at the next level to hold me accountable. And so it goes hand in hand with jujitsu. I owe a lot of that to Pat, my training partner for the last 15 years, the one that introduced me to jujitsu itself. He always texts me, hey, headed up to the gym. Cool, I'm right behind you. Hey, you know, the accountability is everything because even when I was hurt and I could just literally crawl onto the mat, had my knee wrapped up, and I could sometimes do some technique, I was learning more because I was so in tuned with learning visually versus like when you're going at it and the heart's pumping and you miss a lot of steps. But because I was injured, I was able to really see the picture in a different perspective, be able to see that, man, I was missing those steps. And it was because it could have been numerous things, right? It could have been my mindset then. It could have been whatever it was. But I truly believe no matter what, when you don't feel like showing up, those are the times that you should show up. Yeah. Where did you learn that? Did you learn that? Was that taught in school? Did you learn that from a friend? Like what? Honestly, I would say my dad. Your dad? Yeah, watching my dad. He empowered you? Absolutely. I mean, my dad is a huge reason of why I do what I do now. And I learned a lot from him on what I don't want to do as well, but I learned more than anything. I worked for my dad for a little bit while I was still building the aquarium side of my business. He would wake up so sick. I've heard him throwing up and still get in that truck to go to work and take care of business, to provide for his family, to provide for this and that. So you wanted to model that behavior? Absolutely. So I know, and it's so crazy because I'm a firm believer. I've been sick, right? And I've went to work. And it's so crazy is when you let your body sit up, a lot of times it takes you longer to heal. Yeah. Same with working out, right? If I go and just do an intense workout one day and then the next day I don't go work out because I'm so sore, what ends up happening? I'm sore the next day again. I'm like, oh my gosh. But I noticed that if I at least stretch or do a jog or get the endorphins rolling, get the body flowing, I heal faster. And it's actually scientifically proven. I didn't know that at the time, right? But I knew that, hey, as long as I keep going, I know I'm going to be okay. I've got a cold, okay. Can I share something with you? Yeah. So I woke up this morning and I kind of felt like a turd. I felt like crap. I was like, man, I've got a guest coming on the Level Up podcast. We've got to serve. We've got to impact, right? And that's what kept me. I was like, we've got to show up, right? Yeah. It's so crazy. I did too. My throat's scratching. My voice is a little off today. I literally for this millisecond go, man, should I tell Sean? I'm a little under the weather. Don't you dare. I said, no way in hell am I doing that. I'm showing up to show out, right? Like, let's do this. I figured I'd get that plugged in there because I was like, I didn't feel like it either. It's so crazy. Like, I'm literally right there with you. The exact same thing happened to me this morning, right? But we know tomorrow's going to, right? We're not guaranteed tomorrow, but my point is, is like, hey, we're going to do it. We're just going to do it anyways. Just like the plunge, right? The cold plunge. Whatever it may be, it's typically those times when you don't want to do it and you do it anyways. That's when the key ingredient, the magic happens, right? It's just mental toughness. You get the reward. Like, at the end of the day, like I was just saying earlier, like you get to close your eyes at the end of the day. And for me, because I give all of me every day, I can go to bed every single night knowing that, man, I gave it. Hey, and I'm able to release it all. And I sleep great almost 99% of my nights. When you say you give it all, when you give all of yourself, what do you mean by that? I mean in all aspects. Yeah. I try to truly be present in all moments. Yeah. Right? And put the phone away. Yeah. I think that's one of the biggest things that's helped me in the past six months is I've gotten away from social media. Yeah. And I know this is kind of personal, but I literally do not get on social media anymore unless I'm using the restroom. Yeah. That's it. That's the only time. I realized that, man, I was spending three to four hours a day. Yep. You know that statistics show that within a 20-year span, if you spend four to five hours a day on the phone, you would have wasted seven years of your life in 20 years. Wow. That's wild, right? Yeah, man. That's insane. So when I heard that, I'm like, no way am I going to waste, especially with my kids growing right now, right? As kids, because I got a 14-year-old, a 12-year-old, and an eight-year-old. It has flown by. Yes. And I'm thinking to myself, okay, let's just take the last 14 years. How much of that time have I spent on my device that I could have spent developing my sons? Wow. Right? To be the man that I am today, I want them to be who I am right now at 35 when they're 18. Yes. Right? Yes. I want them to be able to be at a place where I'm at now at 35 years old, they're going to be 18, 20 years old, being able to be at the same position I'm in now that took me 17 years to grow and occur and to go through the hard lessons and this and that. So that's what I reflect on a lot in my life is, would I want my kids doing that? No. So I'm not going to do it. Yeah. I love that, man. That's perfectly said. And you're going to be able to cut that learning curve in half. And I know that the way you're showing up for them and becoming the best version of yourself, they're going to want to model that behavior. Just to touch on that a little bit more too, is you will get so much more shit done. Yes. I'm telling you right now. What do you mean by that? Because this is the thing, I hear it all the time and I can't stand it. I don't have enough time. You don't have enough time because you're saying you don't have enough time. Yeah. Evaluate your life. Yeah. Audit it. Right? Look at your life. Where are you spending your time? Every day. Four hours a day on the phone. And look, it's a coping mechanism at the end of the day. Yeah. Yeah. We drown ourselves out in it because we're worried about X, Y, and Z. Right. Right? Whatever it may be, we all have our own issues. That's right. I get that. However, when you can analyze your own life and go, man, I really am. The phone will tell you how much time you're spending on it. Yes. You don't have to guess. There's a setting in there you can type. Yeah. Exactly. So you don't have to guess. This is not a guessing game. Right. Look at your phone. Yeah. Right now and say, hey, how much time do I spend on my device? You spend half for the first couple of weeks. Yes. You'll be blown away on how much stuff you can get done. So what do people do with their time? What do you do with your time when you don't do that, Cody? I'm bored. Self-development, man. Yeah. Work on yourself. Do what matters most to them. Exactly. Right. It's the most rewarding thing and it's because when you actually work on yourself, you start realizing that you can actually help others. And let's be real. Yeah. There's no greater reward than helping others. That's right. It can't be paid for. It can't be bought. It's incredible. Yeah. And it could be helping your kids. It could be helping your wife. It could be helping your neighbor. Yeah. It could be all these other things. Right. And you'll realize that when you get your head out of looking at other people's lives. Yeah. That's right. Yeah. Because it creates so much, whether it's jealousy, envy, or that person's taking a vacation and I'm guilty as charged. Right. I'm like, dang, you know what? We haven't taken one in a month or two months or whatever. Hey, we need to look into booking this. Right. Something happens in our mind like, okay, well they're doing this. We need to get on this. Yeah. And it's so funny because when we post that stuff on social media and stuff like that. Right. And then it's what's interesting is like a month or two months later, you see everybody kind of following suit. Right. And we've done that as well, whether it's a cruise or hiking or whatever it may be because it's almost like a fear of missing out. I got to do that. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
