During the speaker's time in solar sales, they encountered highly dedicated salesmen who would work long hours, sometimes even sleeping in their cars to maximize their selling time. One salesman had hats and shirts from local schools and sports teams, which helped him build rapport with homeowners and increase the likelihood of them answering the door. The speaker suggests trying a similar approach when selling roofing or going door-to-door, by finding something in the homeowner's environment to connect with and build rapport. During my solar sales era, I ran into some pretty good salesmen, and when you're selling solar door-to-door as your only form of income, there's no limit to the number of hours you can put in. So these guys were going hard in the paint, sunup to sundown, door after door, sometimes even knocking the no soliciting doors because they weren't there to sell anything, right? These guys would even sleep in their cars sometimes if they drove too far out of the way and wake up and keep knocking. So needless to say, they had some tricks up their sleeves, and I learned a few of them, and here's one. This guy had hats and shirts from all the major schools and sports teams in that area because he would sell in an area where he lived. And so when he walked up to the door and someone saw that he had their high school or their college or their favorite team, this guy had hats and shirts from all the major sports teams in that area, so the major high schools, the major colleges. So when he walked up to a door and the person saw that they had their high school or their middle school even on a hat, they're like two to three times more likely to answer the door and it builds instant rapport with that homeowner. So try something like that when you're selling roofing. So try something like that when you're going door to door. Maybe you don't need certain clothes, maybe you're selling an area where you don't live so that doesn't really make sense for you. But maybe you just comment on a Cowboys yard sign or a Chiefs bumper sticker or something at their home that would build rapport with that homeowner. It's a super easy way to make that connection with the homeowner instantly.
