Advancements in technology like sonar, lidar, AUV, and ROV have helped underwater archaeology by providing detailed information about wrecks. They can create precise 3D images and measurements, better than scuba. However, these technologies are expensive, require training, and are weather-dependent. Limited budgets and lack of expertise hinder their use. Also, they can only be used in specific weather conditions. While helpful, improvements are still needed in underwater archaeology. The next advancements in technology came with the use of sonar, lidar, AUV, and ROV. These all benefited the advancement of archaeology by being able to get more detailed information about the wrecks. They can create a whole 3D image of the wreck with exact measurements which is more precise than the measurements that could be gathered with the scuba method. The problem that comes with this technology is that it is very expensive, the training required, and the dependency on weather conditions. The cost of lidar is very expensive and the cost of maintenance is also expensive, and some of these projects have limited budgets. These methods are all very complex and require extensive training. This requires money and expertise which not all projects have. Finally, a lot of this equipment can only be used during certain weather conditions, so that gives limited time to perform these research methods if the weather conditions are bad. Overall, the advancements in underwater archaeology have helped the field in its research, but there are still improvements that could be made.
