The unions tried to renegotiate contracts with the AMPTP for fair deals, but negotiations failed due to concerns over compensation and AI. The Screen Actors Guild and the Writers Guild went on strike together, demanding higher pay, job security, and protection against AI. SAG-AFTRA later joined the strike. They are advocating for better payments and regulations on AI use. As agreements were up for renewal, the unions attempted to renegotiate contracts with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, more commonly known as the AMPTP, to ensure a fair deal for everyone involved. However, as concerns grew over insufficient compensation in the era of streaming dominance and the increasing influence of artificial intelligence, negotiations hit a wall. Unable to reach an agreement with the AMPTP, both the Screen Actors Guild and the Writers Guild decided to take a bold step. In a historic move, a double strike was called, actors and writers side-by-side on the picket lines, bringing the entire entertainment industry to a complete standstill. The Writers Guild initiated their strike on May 2nd of 2023, demanding higher roll-a-pleas, mandatory staffing in the writers' rooms, and protection against the encroaching threat of artificial intelligence. The writers' demands reflect the changing dynamics of the industry, where streaming platforms have reshaped the compensation landscape, and the advent of AI poses new challenges to job security. But the story doesn't end there. In a show of solidarity in joining the fight for their own workers, SAG-AFTRA joined the writers on the picket lines in July. Now, both actors and writers are united in their struggle, advocating for higher residual payments and pushing for regulations against the use of artificial intelligence, particularly concerning digital likeness.
