Today we're diving into a life-changing topic that's incredibly personal to me, the journey of embracing change, especially when it arrives unexpectedly. I'm Tatyam Lalsi, your host, and today I'm going to share a pivotal experience from my own life, a journey that began with an unexpected twist. Picture this, I was 18 just out of high school and brimming with dreams and aspirations. I had my sights set on going to some college, pursuing a diploma, but life however had its own plans for me. At a time when most of my peers were stepping into the world of possibilities, I found myself facing a reality I hadn't anticipated. I was pregnant, yes, at 18 and a mom by 19. It's hard to put into words just how terrifying that time was. I was a child myself, suddenly thrust into the role of a caregiver for a baby. I was juggling napkins, feedings, and sleepless nights. Oh yes, napkins, because I couldn't afford diapers. The world I knew seemed to have shifted overnight, leaving me feeling like I had lost all my sense of direction. Looking back though, 19 years later, I can't help but smile when I see my daughter. She's grown into an amazing individual and my heart overflows with love and gratitude. But let me tell you, those early days were far from easy. Taking care of another human being is not an easy task. Worse, one who cannot talk. You need to guess why they're crying. It felt like life had pressed the fast forward button, pushing me into adulthood without warning. I missed the coos and the cries. I was confronted with challenges that seemed overwhelming. Imagine being an unemployed, young, single mother, trying to navigate the responsibilities of parenthood while facing financial struggles. I questioned how I would provide for myself, let alone an infant who depended on me entirely. And then there was the social isolation, the harsh judgment from my culture, which held strong religious beliefs. Falling pregnant at a tender age is frowned upon, especially if the father of the child is not taking responsibility. And it all falls on the girl child as if I miraculously conceived a child and I felt like an outcast. I felt like I had done the unforgivable and was not worthy and had carelessly thrown my promising future away. Loneliness settled in. And I often wondered if I could ever belong again, if I could ever be anything. Doubts nagged at me. Could I be a good mother when I couldn't even provide stability for myself? How could I guide my daughter through life's challenges when I was finding my own way? Still, but in the midst of these doubts, a fire ignited within me, a determination to prove that I could rise above these circumstances. Each day became a lesson in resilience. As I held my precious little one, her innocent eyes filled with wonder, her sweet laughter echoing in the air. I discovered the strength that vulnerability brings. And I found that being a risk taker was more than just a choice. It was a necessity for survival. The challenges that once seemed overbearing, were slowly becoming stepping stones towards personal growth. Looking at the face of my little human, the way her tiny little hands grasped my finger, the warmth of her presence, I felt a fire within me. Her presence not only gave me purpose, but it also ignited my determination to do right by her. In these moments, I found a love that was both fierce and tender, urging me to persevere despite the obstacles. As I navigated motherhood, I came to understand that my journey was not just my own. It was a path that countless strong women before me have walked. Each sleepless night, every sacrifice, and every hard decision was a page in the story of mothers throughout time. It was a sisterhood of resilience, and an unwavering love. And I was now part of it. The path I walked wasn't devoid of doubts or challenges. There were moments when exhaustion threatened to engulf me and the weight of societal judgment felt just unbearable. But in the eyes of my child, I saw a reflection of the strength I had inside me. I realized that my ability to weather these storms was a gift I could pass on to her, a legacy of determination and grace. Remember, your journey is not uniquely yours. It's okay to make mistakes. Mistakes don't define you. It's only a reminder that you're only human after all. Every setback is an opportunity to learn and to grow. Keep your dreams alive and believe in your ability to create a bright future for yourself and your child. Through the struggles and the triumphs, you are stronger than you know. As one ancient Greek philosopher wisely said, it's not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters. Let these words guide you. So to all the young single mothers out there who may be facing similar struggles, I want to share a piece of advice. Embrace your journey, even if it feels overwhelming. Don't be afraid to ask for help. You don't have to go through this alone. Reach out to your friends, family, and community for support. There are also many resources available to help you, such as government programs, counseling services, and support groups. Remember, you are not alone. You are part of a lineage of strength. You have the power to transform challenges into opportunities and setbacks into stepping stones. So hold on to your dreams and keep moving forward. You can do this.
