G'day guys, I'm Justin. I'm Russ and welcome back to the podcast. Here we are again. Happy as can be with Ethan, you know guys how we going? Yeah, yeah Yeah, we've got coming. Yeah. Well, you've been keen for a while, haven't you? Yeah a couple weeks. Yeah Yeah, well we've we missed the Monday one but that's because we've got some changes coming up So I didn't actually didn't tell you Russ, but I looked at the poll and yeah We've actually quite strongly in favor of people suggesting that we do one a week one a week. Okay, really? So that's not that it's bad, but that's just more that to keep up with it. Yeah, of course. Yeah, that's fair enough So what makes our lives easier? Yeah, it does make our lives a lot easier and it probably gives us a chance to create some like more high quality one Definitely yeah Yeah, so we might play around with one maybe two a week Yeah, probably the brains will go because two was the second one. Yeah for sure. So yeah, that'll give us a bit of a wait But yeah, we missed the Monday one because of that just because and we've just had so much going on We've been pretty full on like with HSE coming up. I've got my Music stuff getting assessed tomorrow. Oh, yes. You had to re-record that didn't you? Yeah, so I had to fiddle around some backing tracks and things to get it just right for me We're all set now Eight o'clock tomorrow morning. Oh Yeah pressures on I'm first up to so what about you? What's this news for the tomorrow? Hey? Oh tomorrow. I've got my distance that exam. Yeah the design of technology Yeah, and you feeling all right. Yeah, I'm feeling all right. Yeah. Well, that's not all the stuff This year's been pretty crazy. Yeah, it's gonna be all right. Yeah. Yeah some nights Tonight when I get home So outside of school you do a bit of metal work. Hi. Yeah, I do a bit of metal work Tell us a bit about that blacksmithing. Yeah Well, I remember this is a bit of topic. I remember in one of your earlier Podcasts like probably the second one. I reckon you guys are talking about Doing like what you would be back in medieval time. Yeah, I said blacksmith. No, I found that quite funny So yeah, but yeah, I've been doing that As a hobby for about a Year and a half now. Oh, yeah I've built all my own gear everything spent Too much money on a little bit. Yeah. Yeah, that's good because it's an investment that you can yeah It's a dying art though, isn't it? Or is it all right? It's it's coming back. I think more people are getting into it. So I mean Hundred years ago pretty popular 200 years ago pretty popular Yeah And then kind of after World War one kind of died off because around that stage everything was going into production That's really yeah Cuz like turn of the Industrial Revolution was about 1850. Yeah, and I but they still had all these people Repairing machines and making all these parts. Yeah, but then World War one happened and then there was kind of a shift in everything and it became more focused on production And so it kind of died off a bit. Yeah, and then I'd say probably The last 30 years it started to pick up a bit of momentum. Yeah, there's There's a few companies in Australia actually One called Everly works in Sydney. Mm-hmm right next to Redfern station that They actually own It used to be two days but now they only own one two bays of where they are one day of where they used to make the Steam trains for New South Wales Wow, so they've got all this crazy. They've got the forging bay. So they've got all these crazy like forging equipment like these tools called power hammers Like 150 years old to build the big metal like shells that one are all the fabrication stuff for it so all the big so that would make wheels that we've made the axles for yeah, and the Like linkages to everything that would have done all the heavy forging in there. Yeah, and there's something like 13 base overall but from Bay's three Like three onwards has all been like renovated and turned into offices and there's an IGA in there Actually did work experience with them last year. Oh, yeah, which is he's a fun But yeah, they used to own Bays one and two which is on the Redfern station side. Yeah, but now Government New South Wales government took back Half the lease from Matt's owner. Yeah, they've turned it into a pub. Yeah Yeah It's cool. They've kept all the like big old tools in there Yeah, whether like cage them off or whatever so people can look at them. So with blacksmithing Do you just hit hot metal things that what blacksmithing is? Maybe maybe a better question What kind of things do you make? Oh, yeah, so in answer to Justin's question. Yes, we Blacksmiths get the metal hot and hit it with a hammer really hard pretty much basic principle the stuff I like to make Just this last weekend. I took about five weeks off just because the school and Bunch of other stuff, but just this weekend. We just had Made some blood lifters. All right. I like telling those I was planning on going to the Naviac markets and telling them a couple months ago, but Markets is just insurance. It's so much money for them. Yeah 210 bucks for 12 months insurance Wow. Yeah, pretty crazy. Yeah, it's not worth it unless you go a lot Yeah, unless I'm doing it like a one-off thing. Yeah, I might pay off. No and they had three months six months Twelve months and it's just so much money. The cheapest was $90 for three months. I think it was. Yeah. Yeah Yeah for the insurance I needed but yeah, I've sold bottle openers to friends that's good All kinds of stuff. There's a couple pictures up on my Instagram. Yeah I was a little plug in there. Yeah, that's a giant for steel. That's the one if you're on the school field Did you make knives as well? That's funny. Yeah, that's what I want to get into and ring I've seen you make a few rings. I've made a couple rings. Yeah Dimacus So, yeah two years ago Just over two years ago. I went out to a makes place who does knife making pretty much full-time now. Mm-hmm Oh, oh not full full-time, but he does all this other stuff as well earning money He he was he finished year 12 last year. Yep, and I made my first knife with him there. Yeah Sure guys picture later, but yeah, he's um He does crazy knives he's selling sets $1,000-$2,000. Oh Yeah, yeah, especially Custom-made stuff. Yeah, and I made my first knife with him and just loved it so much so much fun And it's all totally legal, isn't it? There's no yeah, so it as far as I understand You have to be over 16 to buy and sell 17 So and then About two months after that so about this time last Two years ago actually. Yeah, I text him going. Hey, my dad used to be a chef and I want him It's his 44th birthday this year or something. Yeah 44th. That was it and You go, okay. I want to make him a knife like a really nice one. Yeah, I can you help me out and goes? Oh, yeah. Sure. Do you want to do Damascus? So for people who don't know Damascus is what a lot of people refer to as the Japanese field where it's been folded over and You can see the difference. Yeah, that's the technical term is Damascus so it So Damascus is in Syria, but really Damascus originated in India It's a whole confusing back story. I don't know Pretty lightweight material. Do you know it's a lot of people get that That misconception that it's a lot of it actually the same way so because it's Obviously different deals will have different bite capacities depending on Different weight ranges depending on what's in it like the density and everything because you can obviously get different kinds of steel Yeah, is it just more like stylistic? Yeah, so it's harder to do Much more stylistic and you can charge a lot more for it. Yeah, so if I made My dad's knife just out of plain Say 1084 steel, which is a nice deal. So nice deal has In between 0.8 and 2% carbon. Yeah, and that allows it to harden So the carbon creates a crystalline structure. So that makes it super hot. Yeah, so that's what allows the knife to stay sharp Yeah, yeah So 1084 is a really common steel if I made out of that probably it would probably work be worth 150 to 50 dollars, maybe still pretty good When you go into the knife making trade, yeah But yeah, I was talking to my Tyler guys did it with a couple months ago Hey guys, okay. Hey, how much do you reckon dad's knife that we made together would be worth and he goes? Oh probably Yeah, and we actually made two we ended up making two because we had so much steel Yeah, I wanted I had like a design in mind and the size I wanted. Yeah So we had too much steel for that size. So because we would have been wasting a lot so we cut off we cut off so we had The bar was probably about that thick and like that long. Yeah, we cut off about With of that like an inch wide and we managed to get and hold on the knife out of that Wow Yeah, is it expensive stuff? Yeah So I'm actually Just to that three weeks ago I went out to his place by myself to do some stuff because he's got all the proper tools Yeah, I don't it's a lot of money for the proper tools for it. Yeah So now I've spent probably close to two and a half grand on all my gear here That's including Consumables and stuff like that. So yeah gas and paper. Yeah Grinding discs all this other stuff. Yeah feel yeah everything Like gas is just such a killer Yeah, that's how I use that's how I heat it up. You just have a flame burning. Don't yeah, so My forge runs off of gas so you can have two different forges to the two main kinds of gas or solid solid It's like runs off coal, right? Coal or charcoal coke some people use which is like a refined charcoal Gas is definitely the cheapest. Yeah. Yeah overall But it still costs a lot because your nine kilo gas bottles to get replaced at findings is like 30 bucks Yeah, and you've been thrown pretty quickly Depending what you're doing. Yeah, so for Damascus you burn through a ton because you have to get it so hot So you're starting with two different steels for Damascus and you're merging it into one like chemically pretty much Yeah So it it sounds confusing and like mind-boggling but it really is Simple the process to do it. Mm-hmm. So steel has a melting point of about 2,500 degrees and about yeah about 200 degrees below me. Yeah, 50 degrees and sorry Gets pretty hot. Yeah, but about 200 degrees below that the steel starts to get like tacky almost like kind of like blue tack Yeah, if you were to touch it with another bit of steel because oh, yeah Lose your finger. Yeah, if you touch it with your hand and it's at that temperature where you can Apply a force. Yeah, like hammer or a hydraulic press or a power hammer and that squishes it together so and it makes it a harmonious piece of steel rather than all these Different layers. Yeah. Yeah, so you have two different steels. One of them has nickel in it. Yeah, and it and So when you grind to Damascus like with an angle grinder or a belt grinder, it looks like regular steel Yeah So you put it in a special acid and it the nickel in one of the steels Actually resists the acid and the other one etches away and that's how you get the light and dark Yeah, it's it's a lot It sounds like a lot. I have to say I've never really got into that whole thing, but I was into Wood carving for a while there. Yeah, I was as well. I was making a lot of like wooden bush knives and things Yeah, like pieces of wood. That's a lot more simple though It might be a bit of a knife and a bit of wood and away you go. Yeah. Yeah, this is a very lengthy process Yeah, it took me 30 hours. I think I calculated it to to make dad's big knife. Yeah Yeah, it was over three days I did it yeah But yeah, it was it is a very lengthy process Yeah, it's pretty interesting stuff. But um, we'll kind of pivot off that. I've got a little topic that I wanted to bring up What do we think about cartoons nowadays and what they used to be like? I don't like I was looking at like Roadrunner and stuff like that Whatever that is and like, you know, like I'm buggy bunny and stuff Yeah, what we have is I'm not I don't think it's just comparable. No, that's completely different I think that's a show like changing time and style like I mean Kind of pivoting off that yeah the pivot off the pivot The wiggles have you guys seen the new stuff? Yes, it's changed animated. No, I don't make it more like they've introduced like that just more like gender-neutral To make it like again more accessible to the current society. Yeah. I suppose time does change like that Yeah, I think that's definitely what you can think about and similar in some ways to two cartoons because like, you know I don't know the first thing that comes to my mind. Is that like a lot of cartoons? I like even I watch from towards my later years of watching cartoons suppose more like not violence per se, but you know fighting and superhero thing and Compared to like what you brought up with Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes and all that was all pretty playful very stupid Whereas now you have like, you know, yeah Baby shark and a major thing or whatever that Yeah, I don't know it's cool but like I don't know I just don't say yeah, I feel like it's a bit like bad really But yeah, I reckon it isn't and in 20 years time, they're gonna look back at it and go Oh, we love what we had like, yeah, I'm sure they will and it's just a matter of what they grow up with Yeah, I think like we we are Era and we've grown up with that stuff and we loved it. And so we wouldn't we would think anything else Yeah, but again, yeah, as you say that this new generation will grow up with these shows and they'll think How come they don't make more stuff like Bugs Bunny down that like me I like it all like the Flintstones or I feel like yeah, they're all a lot. Yeah, but they're all like a very style of stupid But I think it's people that I've tried all that stuff with other people and they just do not It's the kind of people don't get anymore. People don't appreciate slapstick for it. They just kind of look at it Yeah, you watch it with like the kids in year eight or whatever and they're just like Stupid yeah funny Yeah, well, I just I don't get it because I think it's like pretty funny How do you do? I loved it. I drove Yeah, I loved it. Yeah, my dad my dad was boom. I used to wake up early just to watch Leaching. Yeah. Yeah, I'd get up at six o'clock and like sneak downstairs to what to turn the TV volume right down. Yeah Yeah, my dad grew up with that stuff. He was born back in like 1947 or something Like the original Loved it. Well one thing that kids are gonna experience anymore. It's an ad break when you start to like you have an ad break It's when you show you Come on and you'd run back to the lounge. Yeah That TV is TV a thing still it is Yeah, yeah, there's a lot of good good drama and things dramas and like the block But how many households really use antenna TV these days I do every now and again All right. It depends what I'm doing means that love watching. Um What is it? Um? Not Anthony's Roadshow, but like the the porn stars American pickers and our dad loves watching like border control. Yeah highway patrol News which again, I suppose that can be watched from the comfort of your phone Yeah, yeah I just suppose I look at things like Netflix and add culture really in the thing anymore You never have to stop your show. I'm watching that. Yeah. Well, there's the whole YouTube thing like they've all got ads Yeah, that's true actually, but you can pay to not have that. I actually kind of say it is like It's kind of just merging into what we decide so as a society we want everything now and here You don't want to wait for things. That's right. And so we've got you can gratification We don't even have to wait to watch our TV. We don't even have ads anymore. Yeah I think that's feeding into it. Well, wait, it's gonna be a point where just everything will be so, you know fast and stimulated We'll just combust and blow up. Yeah Mmm, like I don't I don't what else could they really make more like on-demand To be honest I don't want to think about that because I'm already in a position where everything's like so just give me now, give me now, give me now You know, that's that's all we've been looking for Right now Funny I was going to say fast food's a bit like that but it really isn't I feel like fast food's really slacked off Yeah Nowadays it's expensive, it's gross and it takes forever I reckon Yeah What do you guys reckon? It depends what fast food you go to Probably like McDonald's, KFC Those kind of places but Uh, Guzman Guzman by Gomez is pretty good Yeah, okay, they're good They're pretty good Yeah, I like them And like Macca's is okay if you're just getting something small like McFlurry or a drink or something Yeah, I feel like people are actually kind of resisting going to those places a lot more now even just with inflation and the prices Yeah I remember, I was probably 8 years old Um, we used to go to Macca's and you remember the build your own burger thing? Yeah We used to be able to make it on a Walmart I forgot that Yeah, build your own burgers We used to um, like whenever we went out we'd go oh can we go to Macca's and get our own burgers That's sick Yeah, and um, it would be $9 Yeah, right And now it's like so much more, like it's big Mac's are what, like nearly $15 Pretty insane Yeah, crazy prices Yeah It's just going up and up and up Anyway, we better wrap that one up because um, Russell's a sleeping man I'm a sleeping man He needs things to do, places to be Um, we'll get you to quickly close your prayer rug Oh, we've got to open Yeah, that's right Yeah, Lord thanks again for another potty Um, we love getting together and talking to people Lord and obviously giving the guys at home something to listen to as well Um, yeah, let's pray for um, safety over everyone during this week and for those who are listening at home Lord That yeah, that we get something out of this Lord and that you've spoken through us and we'll connect with them somehow Um, yeah, be with us and be with those at home Um, praying in your mighty name, Amen Amen Yeah, so thanks again for coming on Ethan Yeah, I really appreciate it Thanks for having me A little chat, an interesting thing Yeah, yeah, for sure Feel like I'm going out in the world in blacksmiths now but um Stay posted guys, there'll be a few changes coming up with podcasts and stuff like that but um Sure will Continue to look forward to it and um, yeah, we'll catch you guys in the next episode Sounds good So once again, I'm Jeff I'm Russ We'll catch you later See you guys Woo!
