I'm your host, Nathan Collins. Thanks for tuning in today. Today's topic at hand, we're going to be diving into the fascinating yet scary world of artificial intelligence. Today, we are going to be talking about and exploring the dire question of many, what are the potential risks and benefits of the increasing development of AI technology and what potential impacts it can have on society and our way of life? Artificial intelligence is rapidly improving and emerging as one of the most important and revolutionary technologies in the history of the world. Technology is improving exponentially and is undoubtedly the key to the future in finding out everything the universe holds. To think that only around 50 years ago, we had only the tech to invent the game of Pong, which is just two pixelated voxels and a pixelated ball. And now we have fully immersive games, visibly and sensibly, and also have programs that can ace the hardest tests and answer almost any question in seconds that it is thrown at. It is remarkable. While the development of technology is undoubtedly great, it can also be incredibly scary. AI has the potential to do some amazing things, yes, however, us as humans do not find a way to control it or have policies and laws in place regarding it, then AI could potentially be capable of doing some pretty scary stuff. There have been many people in the tech space that have come out stating their concerns that AI could get too powerful and become autonomous and do not need humans anymore and could be used to start wars. It's just the tip of the iceberg. In this podcast today, we'll be looking into many different sources from many well-profound authors and individuals in the tech and AI space to get their thoughts on this revolutionizing technology. We'll hear from first-hand tech and AI developers, peer-reviewed, extremely reliable authors, and other people in the space of tech and people who have good thoughts and ideas regarding the topic. Throughout this podcast, we will aim to further explain what artificial intelligence is, how this cutting-edge technology is rapidly increasing and becoming more powerful, and all the good and bad that can potentially come with it and how that will change and shape our lives. Whether you are someone who loves tech or AI, a concerned individual and what this could mean for a society, or just someone curious about AI and want to learn more, then this is a podcast and place to be. In this podcast, we're going to be talking about and exploring the question, what are the potential risks and benefits of the increasing development of AI technology and what potential impacts it can have on society and our way of life? I believe this topic is very important because with technology rapidly improving, and it will keep improving at an exponential rate, we need to be aware of the technological advancements we have made, especially AI, as it has the potential to revolutionize our way of life. Also with AI, comes many benefits as well as negatives that we need to address and understand and examine how these can potentially affect society and our way of life. Now, before we get too deep in this topic, it is important to define and look into what exactly artificial intelligence, or AI for short, is. According to TechTarget, artificial intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence process by machines, especially computer systems. Specific applications of AI include expert systems, natural language processing, speech recognition, and machine vision. TechTarget also goes in to briefly describe how it works, and to quickly summarize, artificial intelligence works by taking in and analyzing mass amounts of data and information, and then it looks to find trends or patterns, and then uses those to then make predictions on other things that have happened or that could potentially happen in the future. Next, we're going to be diving into some of the research I have done and hear what they have to say about our topic today. We'll be hearing from the leaders in technology and AI, as well as journalists, scholars, and others who have well thought out and good ideas and opinions on this topic. First off, we're going to look into a scholarly source from World Health Organization called Balancing Risks and Benefits of Artificial Intelligence in the Health Sector. In this source, they dive into artificial intelligence in the health industry and how it is already being used, as well as future implications of this technology in the field of medicine. This article targets the audience of those who are in the medical field, as well as others who receive healthcare and are wondering how AI is being used in the health industry. This article also helps those they are targeting to explain further how AI is being implemented and addresses benefits, while explaining some negatives and concerns. To shortly summarize this article, they began by explaining that as technology advances and computing power, along with large access to data, is one of the main causes that prompted the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Also, machine algorithms can be used to make diagnosis, potential treatments, and analyze public health threats, and can improve the more and more they are used and the more data they receive. As this all sounds great, and there are many benefits to AI in healthcare, it can also pose many challenges and potential downsides, with a large one being privacy and ethic issues. They go into detail on how having the worry of having personal information public and being accessed and monetized by AI and other companies can be a breach of privacy and safety, and there must be a strong trust information will only be used for the betterment of mankind. It is suggested that there must be international ethics guidelines, as well as human operation and safeguards must be in place, as well as accountability to make sure the benefits outweigh all potential risks. Lastly, the article ends with an insight into how the World Health Organization is already taking steps to address ethics and governance in AI, and also that they establish an expert group to help develop a global framework and ethics of AI and healthcare to ensure these technologies provide a fair and equitable world health. I believe the most powerful element in this source is when they talk about how, yes, it can be great, but also go into the potential concerns and then finish with how the World Health Organization is taking steps to ensure it can be used for good while not being abused. This plays into my topic nicely by providing an example of how AI can be used in healthcare specifically and all the potential benefits and risks it poses within the healthcare. Now personally, do I think having AI in healthcare is a good idea? Well, yes and no. I think it could be amazing and way more efficient in terms of possibly checking people in and helping analyze questions and so on in that aspect, so yes, I think having AI to do that can make that aspect much easier and much more efficient. I also think it can be really good for diagnosing potential treatments and then having designed recovery plan specified for each patient so it's catered to them. However, like it is stated in the article, one bad thing is privacy concerns. I am not sure me as well as many others will want all of our personal information and data being used and going places that we don't know of, so I definitely want there to be some privacy policies in place or be told exactly where my information is going and how it is being used. All in all, I think it could have many benefits, but I would want to know what it is being used for and where it is going. The next source comes from another scholarly article where they conducted a study where they investigated how artificial intelligence could be utilized in the classroom and school and how it could affect education and also how schools are ran. This article comes from IEEE Access called Artificial Intelligence in Education, a Review. This article targets an audience for anyone who is involved in the education system, such as students, teachers, administrators, etc., as well as those in AI or is curious about how AI can be implemented into the education system. The aim of the study is to explore and explain how artificial intelligence can be used in the educational system to help teach and learn, improve results, and revolutionize education. They dive into the different types of AI tech and specific to education, such as uses in administration, instruction, and learning. They also highlight some of the specific potential scenarios that it may be used in education, such as assessment of schools and students, grading and evaluation, personalized teaching and tutoring in smart school, as well as online remote learning. They dive heavily into these benefits, as well as the challenges integrating AI into education is. They highlight the benefits of AI in education, but also acknowledges the challenges of implementing it such as. There must still be limitations and guidelines to protect privacy and security addresses and identify algorithmic biases and make sure ethical considerations are in place to make sure students still learn and the staff still do their jobs, while also getting the benefits AI can pose. After hearing this and going through this study, I think AI has the potential to completely revolutionize the education system. I mean, let's be honest. The education system now is completely outdated and is pretty much solely made to create workers and me personally, along with many of my peers and others, feel you don't learn as much actual information to set you up for success in the real world and doesn't allow you to explore many of the things you actually are passionate about. I could go on and on about the education system, but we'll save that for a different episode. I think having AI in education would be an amazing thing because we now have softwares capable of being asked almost any question and getting the answer out in seconds. I think it would also be beneficial for staff and administrators as it could grade papers and tests for you, as well as provide feedback and help tutor students, as well as potential for being used to organize lessons and so on. However, with any good thing, there has to be negatives, right? Well, of course. There is a big moral aspect with using AI and as memorization isn't as valuable now as we have supercomputers in our pockets, our phones, that can look up and solve almost anything in seconds. It is still important that we learn and have our own thoughts and ideas, so we should still find ways to not overuse it and think for ourselves and use it more of a tool. I think if used right, AI could totally change education for the better. Next, we're going to go to a YouTube video from Fox News called Elon Musk Tells Tucker Potential Dangers of Hyperintelligent AI. As Tucker Carlson interviews Elon Musk, they talk about AI and the dangers it could lead to. The audience for this is definitely a fan of Fox News or just anyone who watches the news, as well as people who are fans of either Elon Musk or Tucker Carlson and is interested in their thoughts on the development of AI technology. Fox News is a fairly trusted news network and Elon Musk is a genius mind who is highly involved in tech and other inventions, such as Tesla and SpaceX, and has been involved with the development of AI. Also, Tucker is a well-respected journalist and is most popular for his truthful and extreme takes. In this interview, Elon is asked his thoughts on AI development, and he was very vocal on the fact that AI is rapidly developing, and while it has countless benefits, that it must be heavily regulated and controlled, because without that, it could lead to many bad things and potentially surpassing mankind intelligence. His concerns revolved around the fact that if AI is not regulated, it could possibly get so advanced that it works autonomously and will not need humans anymore to keep developing itself. It could also make decisions and carry out acts that pose threats to us as humans. Elon also goes into saying that AI is extremely advanced and is capable of doing some very scary stuff. One example that he said is very real and not even that expensive is that facial recognition by AI is already a thing, and it's not that expensive. He went on to say that you hypothetically, for very cheap, could attach a facial recognition AI onto a drone with an explosive and just input someone's face in, and it can go up and blow up right in their face. He had many other things to say about AI and how bad it could be if we don't regulate it. After hearing this, Elon is someone who I look up to personally, and I know how much of a genius his mind is. I also know he is in the space of technology and has had experience and worked on AI, and listening to all the very real and scary possibilities AI is capable of makes me kind of worried. Don't get me wrong, AI is very cool and it can do some remarkable things, but it is also a scary part at the same time. These next two sources are fairly similar and dive into both the benefits and risks of AI. I will save my thoughts on them both until we look through them. Next, we're going to be diving into the benefits and risks of artificial intelligence from Future of Life Institute. This article is for anyone who has possible worries or is excited or just curious on AI and its potential impacts it may have on us or our way of life. Victoria Khan oversaw media and outreach for Future of Life and is a founder of MAG10 Media, which aims to improve science communication. She has also worked with NASA, national labs, and multiple universities. This article starts off by briefly explaining AI and what it is, as well as the importance of researching and understanding it. It also describes how it can be dangerous, why more recently people are looking into it and getting more concerned with AI safety and regulations. It then goes deep into the myths surrounding AI and then clears it up by providing the actual facts on AI. It lastly finishes with a large list of recommended references and links to many other resources regarding AI to gain more information. The last source we looked at is coming out of Bernard, Marr, and Co. called What is the Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Society? Bernard Marr is a well-known influencer and thought-out leader in the field of business and technology, as well as being a Forbes writer and a best-selling author with a strong passion for technology for the good of humanity. The audience I feel like he aims in his article to target is anyone who has possible worries, excited, or just curious on AI and its potential impacts it may have on society and our way of life. I also believe that it is important for almost everyone to look into AI as well as this article and other information about AI as it is constantly and rapidly improving and whether or not we like it, Bernard states, AI will play a part in our lives and affect us all. This article, Marr explains how rapidly AI is developing and how it will soon affect us all. He also goes into detail on the benefits as well as the consequences that artificial intelligence could possibly cause for society and provides some examples that could very well happen. One thing he stated that really stood out to me was when he was talking about AI in the workforce and how it will completely shift jobs in the workforce. He stated that AI will replace up to 7 million jobs in the UK by 2037, but then stated that roughly 7.2 million jobs will be created. He also states that people will then be able to spend more time doing things they actually like and are passionate about, which will create many new jobs and will take away all the jobs people don't really want to do. Now like I've said this before, AI is awesome and could be extremely useful and beneficial and solve many issues we have, but it could also end us if we are not careful. That is all for my experts and sources from now, from hearing from all these thoughts on AI off the top of my head that come to mind right away is AI is pretty freaking awesome, but it's also pretty scary. Technology is going to keep improving at exponential rate as well as artificial intelligence and I have played around with some AI stuff for myself after doing some research and it can do some pretty awesome stuff, such as answer almost any single question, create and analyze photos, create songs, and even make audio that sounds like other people and so much more. I also think the worry of AI becoming so good that it can start to develop itself is very real and very scary. I won't want AI having access to everything and all my information, but I think if there is the right policies and right laws regulating it in place and we use it as more of a tool and it's all human operated, then I think it could change the world we know and the way of life for the better, but that's just my two cents of things. Before we do end this podcast and wrap it up, I want to leave you listeners with some questions to ponder as I would hope you have learned and thought about some things throughout this podcast thus far.
