This podcast explores the topic of empowering a resilient and sustainable agency. It discusses the concept of total defence, which includes various aspects such as military, civil, economic, social, psychological, and cyber defence. The focus is on how total defence intersects with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and police contacts. The podcast also talks about the impact of changing family forms on civil readiness and the role of community engagement in promoting total defence. It highlights the efforts to address inequalities and ensure inclusivity, particularly for the LGBTQ+ community. The podcast concludes by emphasizing the importance of staying informed and proactive in a changing world. Welcome to Group 2 podcast. Today's topic is Empowering a Resilient and Sustainable Agency. We'll be exploring the evolving total defence, sustainable development goals and emerging trends shaping our future. I'm your host, Bernice, together with four ex-USSR students, Isabel, Nash, Seng Ren and Julie. Let's start by discussing the fundamentals of total defence and sustainable development goals. Isabel, what are your thoughts on total defence and how it intersects with the SDGs and police contacts? Total defence encompasses military, civil, economic, social, psychological and cyber defence. With more investments allocated towards civil defences' infrastructural development to compensate for small family units, this aligns with our chosen SDG 11, sustainable cities and communities where Singapore sustainably withstands challenging economic and resource allocation proactively. Singapore's reducing inequalities efforts contribute to a strong social defence appealing to the SDG 10. Now that we have covered the overview, let's explore the emerging global trends that are shaping Singapore's total defence and SDGs as a solution to it. Nash, how do changing family forms in social society affect civil readiness? The complex urban build-up in Singapore, particularly the increasingly smaller family units and single-person households, could be affected during emergencies. Currently, there are 586 public shelters located across the island in underground ambulatory stations, HDB void decks, community centres, schools and government buildings. Small households are at a disadvantage when tasked with responsibilities such as gathering emergency supplies, staying informed and executing evacuation plans. This could strain community resources during emergencies as individuals resort to public services for assistance, thus placing demands on civil defence implementations. Can you share some ways community engagement can promote total defence? Okay, so community engagement plays a crucial role in promoting the principles of total defence. One example is the SG Secure app implemented by the civil defence that includes community drills and simulations. These exercises aim to enhance public awareness and responsiveness during emergencies, ensuring citizens are well prepared to handle various scenarios. This initiative strengthens individual preparedness and cultivates communal resilience. By encouraging citizens to engage in such exercises, there is an overall preparedness for the population. Moving on, let's hear from Julian how the LGBT community is reshaping the landscape of social defence with an attempt. The repeal of Section 377A after five consecutive rejections for eight years was a significant shift for the LGBTQ plus community. This shift to greater inclusivity in Singapore indicates an evolving recognition of the LGBTQ plus community. As part of the social defence pillar, addressing inequalities ensures that the nation's unity is strengthened. In times of crisis, a society with reduced inequality will be more prepared to respond collectively, reinforcing the foundation of total defence. Isabelle and Julian, can you share how community engagement can foster positive change for inequality and ensure inclusivity among the community? An example of community engagement is ThinkFest, a commercial festival dedicated to engaging LGBTQ plus communities and inclusive businesses through its programme of outdoor and lifestyle events. The organisation drives positive change through access to social discussions and networking festivals, which cultivates the inclusivity of LGBTQ communities and promotes awareness for them. A more inclusive society appeals to SDG 10 to deter uncertainties that pose social defence. Likewise, organisations can ensure that community engagement is accessible to everybody, regardless of their sexual orientation and family background, to tailor resources to communities who need them more. Community leaders can initiate those allocations according to respective members' needs. Thank you all for sharing light on total defence, SDG and the emerging trends shaping our resilience. We have come to the end of our podcast and hope that our listeners have gained insight on today's topic. Remember, staying informed and proactive is key to navigating a changing world. With that, thank you and see you again.
