He discusses how Kingston's childhood influenced his music, highlighting his tough upbringing and desire to be a positive role model. Lassman then delves into Kingston's career, including his use of MySpace to connect with a producer and his success with the album "Sean Kingston." He also mentions Kingston's jet skiing accident in 2011, which led to a hiatus in his music career. Lastly, Lassman shares his favorite song, "Fire Burning," and encourages listeners to check out more about Sean Kingston on his social media platforms. Welcome, this is Matthew Lassman from Lassman Media, your host for all the stories and pop cultural trends that are happening in our society. Today, I'm going to start a new series called The Life of Musicians. In this episode, I'm going to discuss a musician who was very important to me growing up, Sean Kingston. First, I'm going to talk about how Sean Kingston's childhood is reflected in his music. Sean Kingston has music in his bones since his grandpa was a popular Jamaican reggae producer named Lawrence Lindo, but this is not the only factor that inspired him to go down the music path. He has been through a lot throughout his childhood, which is why he has a lot to say in his music. At 11 years old, he spent three weeks in jail for breaking and entering. He feels that he shouldn't use profanity in his music since this is a way to be differentiated in the industry and he wants kids and teens to look up to him as an artist. He wants to be seen in a positive light in people's lives since he didn't have the best role models growing up because his mother and sister went to prison when he was 15 for tax evasion and identity theft. At this point, he was at his lowest because he was homeless for a week at a bus stop in Boynton Beach, Florida before his aunt took him in. Next, I'm going to talk about Sean Kingston's career. Sean Kingston, due to having financial struggles, did not own a computer, so he ended up borrowing his friend's computer to find a way to share his music with the world. He went on a social network called MySpace, which was popular back in the early 2000s, and this social network was basically popular for musicians to promote their music and connect with fans, and through this, he found out about a well-known producer named J.R. Rotem and emailed him about three or more times a day until he got a response eventually. Rotem ended up inviting Sean to Los Angeles for a meeting. Following their meeting, Rotem proposed Sean to be part of his new record label, Beluga Heights, who worked with Epic Records to help him make his music album. Sean saw this as a dream coming true and Rotem believed that Sean had a lot of potential and could be a great artist. The first single and album, called Sean Kingston, with the incorporation of the song Beautiful Girls, produced with Beluga Heights, ended up being a domestic and international success, and he began going on tours and collaborating with other artists in the meantime of releasing his next album called Tomorrow, which includes my favorite song, Fire Burning. Kingston ended up bringing a new type of music to society that was called reggae-style R&B. Kingston's music career turned upside down in 2011 when he was in a jet skiing accident while on vacation in Miami, Florida. He got severely injured and had to be taken to the hospital. On his 11th day in the hospital, he ended up having to get emergency surgery because the aorta in his heart was damaged. This delayed his career because the next time he made any singles was in 2019, four years after the accident. The ratings did not do well. His last album to the singles he produced was published in 2022, called Road to Deliverance. He went on tour for this album, but since then he has just been performing shows with some of his songs and has not produced any music. Finally, I'm going to talk about my favorite song, Fire Burning. Fire Burning was a very popular song during its release in 2009, and it was incorporated with Sean Kingston's album, Tomorrow. It had over a million downloads sold. Kingston came up with the idea of this song since he spent a lot of time near the dance floor, and he wanted a song that would give people the ability to want to have fun since the world is very stressful.
