In the third chapter, Lucia reveals to her mother Agnese and Renzo the provocations she received from Don Rodrigo, which she had kept silent about for a long time under the advice of her confessor, Fra Cristoforo. After the revelation, Renzo seeks advice from the lawyer Azecca Garbugli, as advised by Agnese. Upon entering the lawyer's office, Renzo immediately notices the dusty bookshelf and the worn-out robe worn by the lawyer. As Renzo tells his story and mentions the name of the powerful man he wants to go against, Don Rodrigo, the lawyer immediately kicks Renzo out of his office. Meanwhile, Fra Galdino, a Capuchin friar, arrives at the women's house. Lucia asks him to inform Fra Cristoforo and bring him to her house as soon as possible. Finally, Renzo returns to the women and they escape together from what happened. Nel terzo capitolo Lucia rivela a sua madre Agnese a Renzo le provocazioni ricevute da Don Rodrigo di aver taciuto per così tanto tempo sotto consiglio del suo confessore Fra Cristoforo. Dopo la rivelazione Renzo, sotto consiglio di Agnese, si reca dall'avvocato Azecca Garbugli in cerca di un parere. Appena entrato nel suo studio nota subito l'ammasso di polvere presente sulla libreria e la toga consumata che indossava l'avvocato. Mentre Renzo racconta la sua storia fa il nome dell'uomo a cui voleva andare contro, Don Rodrigo, e sentendo quel nome l'avvocato caccia immediatamente Renzo dal suo studio perché non voleva andare contro un uomo così potente. Intanto a casa delle donne arriva Fra Galdino, un capuccino a cui Lucia chiede di avvisare Fra Cristoforo e di farlo venire al più presto a casa sua. Infine Renzo torna dalle donne e si sfuga con loro dell'accaduto.
