The speaker, a white woman in America, considers herself fortunate to have the freedom to choose her future compared to women in other countries. She is grateful for the opportunity to pursue medicine as a pre-med student. However, she acknowledges that she may face obstacles due to her gender, such as doubts about her abilities and gender pay gaps in medicine. Despite these challenges, she recognizes that her situation is better than in other nations where women are not allowed to become doctors or hold positions of power. She emphasizes the importance of appreciating her current position. As a white woman in America, I feel very lucky because I have a lot of freedom to choose the future for my life as compared to other nations. As I mentioned, I'm a pre-med student, so I'm extremely grateful to even have the opportunity to pursue a path in medicine. I still recognize the barriers that I have faced and will face as I pursue this journey. For example, some people may not think that I'm adequate to become a doctor because I'm a woman and I may face gender pay gaps in medicine, but overall my situation could be a lot worse than other nations where some women are not even allowed to become doctors yet hold any positions of power. So while some of my problems may seem hard for me in the moment, I need to put into perspective how grateful I should be for the position I have.
