The podcast aims to preserve the memory of the Women's Softball League in South Brooklyn from 1975 to 2014. The league, also known as the Bar League, was formed from the bars that were the center of social life in Southern Brooklyn. The podcast will capture the experiences of the women who played in the league, including how they balanced life, work, and play. The league was never covered by news organizations and was ignored by local papers. The goal is to preserve their experiences and how they got involved in sports and the Bar League. The podcast is being recorded at the Tamaqua Bar and Marina and features interviews with former players. It is Sunday, February 18th, 2024. We're interviewing Annie Engelbrecht, who was part of the original softball league way back in 1976, and she's going to start to tell us how she got involved in the league, how long she played. Hi everybody, it's nice to be here. Thank you, it's appreciated. I started playing in the league just out of high school. It was 76. I had just finished my senior year, and I was looking for a place to play ball before I went to college. And I lived right near the park, and I used to see women playing there, which was wonderful. Avenue V and Herring Street, Dolgen Park, and that was like one of my most favorite places to be. I miss the league very much. So I got involved with Buckley's through Fran, really, Fran Moore, who I played for many years on other teams in the league, which progressed into moving on from team to team, played on a lot of teams. But I started with Buckley's before it was renovated and became a catering hall and a restaurant. It was just a real neighborhood quaint bar, and we would socialize. We would socialize and... The jersey was actually green and yellow with a beer mug, and it said Buckley's in a semicircle above the beer mug, because this was that kind of a place before they renovated it and made it a nice catering hall. But mostly we want to preserve their experience, how they got involved in the sport, and how they got involved with the Bar League. And not bad, could be worse. No, there's some... I had like this complete thrill once when my body, like, I just hit the ball off the fence, I'm the first girl to do that. So, and people like in the shopping center even saw me, felt like Kate McClark. And it was like, wow, you hit the ball off the fence, I saw you do that. And I was like, oh my God, I can't tell you what this did for me as a kid. And I got the MVP trophy at the awards breakfast that year. And I still have it on my dresser. In case I forget who I am, you know. I had a picture in the phone, somebody on one of those Facebook sheets that day with a picture of me accepting the trophy at the breakfast. And his father was Leo Frechman, who was one of the heads that ran Kings Bay. And he started like a memory page, and they were putting some Kings Bay, so everybody put some Kings Bay pictures, and my picture ended up on their Facebook page. So I saved it, I have it, because I had no picture of that. So that trophy is like in my room. I look at it, it's in my phone. I can have it. So that gave me unbelievable confidence, that when I saw that ball bounce on the curb, I'll never forget it. Because I really loved playing in that league. Did you play with Donna Lago? Yeah, I did. I played with Donna Lago a couple of years, because what happened was, after we got home from college and stuff in the late 70s, some of the guys in Kings Bay started a women's traveling team. Oh, okay. And we would play in Bay Ridge, and we did play in Staten Island. They went to Connecticut, but I didn't go on those long trips. But we played in Governor's Island. We used to play against the soldiers, the women. Really? Yeah, the military. We played in Governor's Island a few times. We'd take the ferry over. And I played for a team called the Brooklyn Dreams. And Donna Lago, I think, might have been on that team, but she was definitely on Kings Bay, because some of the old coaches got us together, because we were so good. They didn't want us to not play. So some of the fathers, Kelly Meade's father... What was his name? Kelly Meade? Kelly Meade, yeah. Okay, yeah. Oh, yeah, I was in the parades. We used to line up in Avenue D. That's where the parades started. Isn't it great? I used it so much. But the years at Kings Bay really gave me the confidence to go on to high school. And then when I got to high school, Mr. Wise was an unbelievably great coach, and he built a dynasty there. So Kings Bay was actually feeding Chiefs Head, and it was almost like a farm AAA team, because the girls who had the opportunity to play in the 70s went on to Chiefs Head. So I was on Mr. Wise's first team in 76, and we went undefeated until we lost the last city championship final to Battenville. We went undefeated. And I'm on the wall of fame for softball for that team. And I went back as an umpire and swore my name there, so that was pretty nice. How many years did Chiefs Head win in a row? He had a dynasty all through the 80s. We won the division and went to the city finals and won the final in 76, and he went to the final every year after that until I think the middle 80s. He had almost a 10-year run. Because Kings Bay was kind of filling Chiefs Head, so he had a dynasty. And he was a great inspiration to me. I went into teaching phys ed and umpiring. In fact, he got me into umpiring, because I wanted to coach, but it was too much of a commitment to have my daughter, because my mother had passed away, and I was dragging her to games. That's why she hates softball. She hates games, and they don't want to be there. So my husband got the idea. He said, why don't you take up umpiring? You're so frustrated, you want to be a coach and work with high school kids. And so I ended up being an elementary junior high phys ed teacher and an umpire. So I umpired for 33 years, and Mr. Wise got me the information how to get certified and take the exam and get certified. 33 years, I just retired from that. In the Brooklyn area? Yes. I did a few tournaments in Staten Island many years ago, some weekend tournaments, just to get some experience. And then I just stuck with the PSAL and the Catholic High School, wherever the assigner would assign you. Once you get certified, you work through an assigner and they give you a schedule once you get certified and take the test. And you have to take the test every year. So you're in the American Legion or sort of in the community of Europe, right? Now you don't have a team for a couple of years, but you do play on the corporate league. That was fun. That was great. I don't know how many corporate leagues they have now, but there's not as many as there used to be. Yeah, it was called the New York Women's League. I do remember that. I was almost going to wear my sweatshirt today, but I thought that would be overkill. I almost wore my Mariners shirt. I thought that would be overkill. It says championship year, our first championship year was 98, so I had to take pictures of them because there were just too many. So I took pictures of them. I had to get them. I had to have the comic book. Yeah, I have the comic book. I have all my Lehmans. You have more? Like I'm going to put that on and relive it. Like all of a sudden, oh wow, 1988 again. Like you'd think that. Alright, now, do you still play first base the whole time? Yeah, pretty much. So because I had my foot on the tire on East 28th Street, I played in Kings Bay at first base and I learned the footwork. Because first base is a lot of footwork. I mean, you've got to have good eyes and hands to take the throws, but you have to switch your feet. A father, Mr. Barbash, we had a girl on my team, Karen Barbash, who played first base and she didn't really want to play and I said, I'll play first base. And the father taught me, the father really taught me how to play first base. Because I don't remember you playing many other positions. Right, I was still in the outfield if they were really stuck, but I never liked it. Because I never really had a good arm. Because we didn't play with stealing in high school and I never really developed a good arm. I just basically took throws and had footwork and I never really developed, I never had a good arm. You never had a throw to third too many times? Not too many times. I would try to throw to third in the warm up just in case I wanted the first to third play. If she did cross over, I tried to nail her. Which a few times I got lucky. But I never really, we didn't play with stealing. Yeah, but when you played for the Santa Clause, what position? Pretty much first base and short center. I was still in the short center. I was still in the short center a lot if we were short girls, which was another problem with the league. We'd be short girls a lot, especially in the summer because they would take their kids on vacation when the kids were out of school because of unreliability. Well, this is a problem with women who want to just play ball in general. I mean, when you think of it, we always had problems in July. Everybody always does, with women, everybody always says, is it work or is it home? Oh, with everything. No, with leisure in the middle. Right, that's a great point. And it's like that with everything. Women always have the juggling act and it kind of falls on us. And as soon as the kids got out of school and went to Disney World and who left with the kids, we'd always have eight people or we would play shorthanded. So for about a month, it was always rough. We can't play Wednesday, we can only play Monday. Alright, so you play for quite a few teams. Oh, too many, yeah, a lot. Alright, more names. Name the teams first. Okay, I play for Buckleys, I play for Browns, I play for Coghlan's, I play for American Legion, I play for Waldo's, I play for JP's, I play for Tomaqua, Wheelers. Was she there the night you got back? No. I didn't go to Wheelers too much. My daughter was young and I had to go home. It was that juggling act thing again. Yeah, that kind of period, I just had to go home after the game. There was another team called For Courage, which Coghlan's became. Coghlan's changed its name because Marianne was on just before she started American Legion, that was short-lived. Ann Brown would remember that team. Ann Brown would know a lot. She would know a lot. For Courage, it was a red jersey, it was this one, because only one of the bars changed names or something. It was the issue of finding sponsors, because you had to play for a bar to be in the league. So I don't know how that happened, they just got a last minute, and then in 85 we became American Legion, but I think in 83 we were For Courage. No, no, no, no, American Legion was earlier, because I remember playing American Legion in 1980. Really? Yeah. You sure? Okay. Maybe, yeah. Because we only played against them for like maybe two or three years. That kind of folded up. People moved on. Oh yeah. Yeah. There was a while at one point we had a lot of teams. Yes, that's right. We had a couple of divisions. That's right. And I keep trying to remember the names, like apostrophes. I don't remember that. Cuckoo's Nest. Gathering, Cuckoo's Nest, yeah, definitely. Oh, they're mostly bars along Flatbush Avenue. I don't remember that. Christie's was late. I was playing for Christie's. Why don't I remember that? Donna got me into Christie's, and then she bounced me out of Christie's one day. Wow, that I don't remember. Cuckoo's Nest I definitely remember. In fact, there was a Cuckoo's Nest one and a two. I think they had so many girls that wanted to play for them they had two teams. They might have, yeah. One after another. Right. Yeah. Jim and Marie Lynn. Oh, that's right. Jim and Marie Lynn. That's right. Boy, that bar I don't know. All right. Wow, yeah. Coney Island Avenue. Coney Island Avenue? No, no, no, no. There was another, J&M. J&M? Right, right, right. Wow, wow. All right, now, how did you juggle going to work, having a family, playing ball? I was always exhausted. You just do it. I had a lot of cooperation from my husband. He was really very, very helpful and on board with me. Remember the pagers? Ha, yeah. Yeah, had a pager. He'd go to his pay phone and I would tell him we had a game. He kept a copy of the schedule on the refrigerator. Kept a copy of the schedule on the refrigerator on a piece of paper. That was our report this year. We had it all. Right. We had two cars, luckily, so that helped. He just cooperated with each other and he was there for each other. It was a team. My husband was always on board with that. He knew playing ball made me really happy. He was married to me, so he wanted to keep me happy. Happy life, happy life. So you played for a long time. Yeah, very long. All right, so what did you play at? I played until I was almost 50. When I was 29, it was like I just didn't want to get hurt. I just didn't want to take a chance getting hurt again. Some of these turf fields were kind of rough to play on. We didn't have a nice turf field that some of the girls in high school have now. No, it was pretty rough playing. Broken glass, flooded fields, you know. Wow, so you figure, Miriam and I are trying to figure out what it means. I know, I don't know. I couldn't give you a number that I remember. That I remember. Well, that's why we're here. The club is big, and that's what we play for. Isn't that great? We go backwards. I'm still here, it's great. So nice to know something's still in Brooklyn, especially as you said that. Well, I was going to do a little thing in Mariners, too. Oh, yeah, they're still there. That's been around. That was classic. Everybody's arch rival. A lot of these boys closed down. I know. Well, the demographics of the neighborhood completely shifted more than we'd ever expect so fast. Starting in the 90s. Around the 90s, it was a big shift. People were moving to Staten Island. And Jersey. And Jersey. I lost a lot of friends in that day. They left. They were developing Staten Island, building more affordable homes. My family's there. Brooklyn wasn't conducive to that. Right. My brother left. He moved to Staten Island for many years. And there's quality ball in Staten Island, too. They have the facilities for it, the funding for it. Well, that's why I think in the PSAL, the championships were won in Sheepshead Bay because all those guys taught their daughters how to play ball. Right, there's a big interest for it. Yeah, there's a big interest there. They grew up playing, and they didn't know what softball was about. And what softball did, and softball did that after is a lot of immigrant people came in and they didn't play softball. We had a shift in demographics and they just did not grow up with softball at all. They don't even really know what it is. No, no, they just run, run, run, run, kick. I was a phys ed teacher for 38 years and I saw a big shift that affected my teaching. I mean, they would do kickball with the kids and they had no clue. And baseball's kind of a complicated sport. It's not simple. It's not a strategy. It's a thinking game. It was too slow for the kids, too. It was a slow-moving game. Because they're not running constantly. Right, and you have to think a lot. You know, what am I going to do with the ball when it's hit to me? You've got to look over the pitch. It's a lot of thinking. Picking out a pitch to hit, developing an eye. It's a slow-moving game and these kids didn't grow up with it the way we did and watch it on TV basically. I mean, it's there, there's an interest for it, but it's not the same thing. I mean, I saw it with teaching. Right. Right. When I finished umpiring, I would say there was about five, maybe six teams in Brooklyn that could play what we'll call quality ball. That's not a lot. That's not a lot. Yeah. That's not a lot in Brooklyn when I left umpiring and that was only two years ago. So that was a problem. The level of play really declined because there was no interest in the sport and kids weren't growing up with it the way I did on the street. It was right there under my window. I'd open the window and there were kids playing. It looked like fun. And I'd wake up to that in the morning. And they don't play in the street anymore. Kids don't play in the street anymore and if it wasn't for the kids in the street and I brought that right into high school and it just progressed. You know, I went to the street, Little League, high school, college and I taught and umpired for my whole life with softball. So did you make it into teaching because of sports? Yeah, definitely. Because at the time you were, I'm going back about at least 50 years now, maybe more, at that time if you were an athletic girl all you could basically do was coach and officiate. That was all the opportunities you had like coming out of high school in the 70s. That was about it. There were no really professional leagues. You really couldn't pursue playing ball on a higher level after college. There weren't just opportunities for it the way there are today. And that was an issue because, I mean, my gym teachers told me in high school that either if I learned golf, bowling or tennis there was really no other future especially if you swing your bat. Swinging a golf club is not going to work for me because the swing and the footwork was so different. I was so bad at golf because of that. I kept lifting the club because of the shift in my feet because I used to step into a pitch. You don't do that when you play golf. And I did not like bowling. I wasn't good at it. And what was the other professional sport golf, bowling or tennis? Tennis. But my gym teachers flat out told me unless you get interested in those three sports become a teacher or a coach. And I ended up umpiring because coaching was too much of a commitment. Yeah, there was no financial opportunity. No financial opportunity. That's a good way to put it. Yeah, right. That was it. So we're talking about 1976 which was three years after Title IX was signed into place. And it got off to a slow start, Title IX. I mean, I graduated three years as well and quickly as I think they should have. Opportunities started to open up for women but not at the time I was around. And it wasn't until maybe the late 80s or early 90s that WNBA started in 97. 97, 96, right? Yeah. And they got off to a slow start and softball never really took off. Except in the amateur leagues. Right. Every four years they tried out softball and they tried. Now, it did make it to the Olympics. Right. Out. Back in. Isn't that crazy? Softball is not the sport for me to pursue. I don't know. Well, one of the reasons I did here was that they thought the US team was too dominant which I don't believe because they lost to Japan one year. They lost to Japan the later time. But one of the times when they voted out was because they thought they were too dominant. Sounds familiar about American Legion. They kind of did that to us too. Instead of getting your plays up to that level. Right. Knock them off. Right. That doesn't work. Right. So I got into being a PT. Phys Ed teacher. Yeah. I taught at St. Edmund Elementary for 38 years. You taught at St. Edmund? Elementary. I had the little kids. When I got out of college, I went to college in Iowa. I was actually recruited for softball. Our team went to the city championship and there were two coaches from a small college in Iowa that went to our Phys Ed department at Sheepshead and they had opportunities. They had what was called athletic orient. They weren't full rides but they had to do it because of Title IX and they were allocating funding and there was some financial aid and let's face it, college wasn't an old alarm in the lake back then. It was affordable. It didn't kill you with college debt for ten years of your life, you know. You can go to college and it was affordable in 1976. It wouldn't kill you. CUNY had just went gone from free to a small tuition. They had just started that. Even at Kingsborough, yeah. Okay, so these two coaches are there. They recruit me for softball. My coach recommends me. I win the wall of fame. I'm the captain of the team. I go undefeated. They come to our thing, our Phys Ed office and I want to jump on board with this and my mother has a total fit. Here I am, this Italian girl and I'm supposed to learn how to cook and wear a dress and they were totally against it. You're not leaving home. She really didn't leave home until she got married when you were an Italian girl. My father had a fit so I couldn't go. So I went to Kingsborough and got 14 of my 16 credits transferred. I had a job at Dunkin' Donuts. I saved my money. I got enough money for a trunk, a plane ticket, a down jacket, thermal underwear and I left. I just left. I transferred. I kept in touch with the coach at Westmore. I kept in touch with him. I told him I'm not giving up the idea. I'm still interested. I'm going to transfer and I just left home. Wow. I just left. I said, I'm doing it. What did your mother and father say? They had a fit. So my mother said, go ahead, go. Go ahead, go. I was told I wasn't college material. You're not this. We'll see how well you do and if you do well I'll help you. So I went and I did well. You know, I ended up with almost a B plus average in my GPA at the end and I studied phys ed and I had psych minor and coaching endorsement. I was two courses away from a psych major too. But anyway, college went well. Ended up meeting my husband in the U.S. history class and we've been happily married for 42 years. So when I met my husband and they liked him when he came home to visit us, all of a sudden college was wonderful. College was wonderful. We met a nice guy. He comes home. He has a lot in common with my father. My father likes electronics and radios. He has a background in electronics. He hits it off with my father. That was it. All of a sudden college was wonderful. I met a guy. This is the way they thought 55 years ago, you know? Alright, now, mine is the opposite. I was encouraged No. just to go to college. No, not me, not at all. My mother wanted me to go to secondary school. My mother wanted me to go to secretarial school. She was going to pay for Catherine Gibbs secretarial school to become a secretary. And she wanted me to take bookkeeping, recordkeeping, and typing in high school which I did to make her happy. So I went to college basically on probation because I had to maintain a C average which wasn't a problem at all. Alright, go ahead. So I end up in Iowa at this small college and I get an athletic grant and I get some financial aid and I get a small government loan at that time. They set this all up. The coach sets up a scholarship package and then you get a work study job so you're making money and you're busy as hell. Your whole day is occupied. I played basketball, varsity basketball and I traveled all over the Midwest playing basketball in Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa. I played softball in Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, all parts of Iowa. I played in tournaments. I have a lot of experience with softball. You do? I do. I thought you were just a ball game girl. No, I played all over the Midwest and my husband came that summer and he stayed in my mother's finished basement until he could find an apartment and he eventually got a job with New York Telephone at the time because he had an electronics background, thank God, because if he didn't get that job we were probably going to have to move back. I had no experience and you had to be what was called nominated to get a job which basically means you have to do a lot of resource work you can imagine and at the time I graduated there were a lot of jobs in the Catholic school system so I actually went to an employment agency to get a secretarial job just to make money to pay off my student loans because I could type 55 words a minute and I had background in it because my mother wanted to be the secretary so I put this dress on and I go to this employment agency and the guy looks at my application and this literally is a true story my wife is a Catholic school teacher she's very happy in the Catholic school system I'll tell her here's her number I'll tell her you're going to call her when you get home get back from the train and go home call her up and tell her how to get an application she calls me up she's expecting a call I contact the diocese they send me an application three different people and it went well they said we're going to put your name on the list and whatever schools need you we'll call you the elementary schools if you want to work in a high school you've got to send them a cover letter and a resume but I didn't have experience none of the high schools took me but I had no problem getting a job in an elementary school I was offered a full time job in St. Bernard because they were building the church in 83 how are you? days a week every Wednesday because there was no gym on Wednesday because the kids would have half day so I was trying to get into the public school system but after three years of trying to get in I gave up the Catholic school system the pay was never great my daughter helped cook and get on board with everything so I had a good support system that's how you do it I did that with my daughter I said I never want you to go through what I had to go through to go to high school and college I don't want you to be a secretary I don't want you to go to college I got one kid I only have one well if I had a sibling I would have went to a state university I know it would have been more affordable because I tried to talk her into going to Binghamton so we took a ride five hours up to Binghamton there was a hill over there with trees that must be the Roseville campus we walked in there and I'm serious to God a spark went off in that kid's eyes as soon as we went in the gate just like she did at Bishop Carney we walked in there and I literally saw like she had the body for it but she doesn't have that aggression in her she's a girly girl she has her nails done every week and wears makeup and buys nice clothes and my mother got a hold of her when I was working she was the daughter my mother always wanted so she spent a lot of time doing makeup shoes clothes pocket books fancy bags I'm
