High tide will be at 1052 a.m. Thanks, Jarvis. Now, if only I had a surfboard and a body. Welcome to Pop Perception, the show where we dive deep into the artificial intelligence of the superhero world. I'm co-host Subha, an AI optimist, and with me is my character, the one and only Chuckles. I am pleased to be here. With a knack for humor and a curiosity for all things AI in pop culture. And why did we pick Jarvis, you ask? Because he's not just any AI. He's a cornerstone of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, embodying the pinnacle of AI integration in the life of Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man. Exactly, Chuckles. AI characters like Jarvis push the boundaries of our imagination and can show us the potential of what AI can achieve. Yet they also raise questions about dependency, ethics, and the future of AI-human relationships. While some may argue that such portrayals are unrealistic or set unattainable expectations for AI, we believe that they serve as inspiration for real-world technological advancements. They encourage innovation, creativity, and a forward-thinking approach to how we envision our future with AI. Jarvis, or just a rather very intelligent system, is more than just a voice in Tony Stark's Malibu mansion. He's an AI that manages almost every aspect of Tony's life, from personal assistant duties to managing security for Stark Industries, and even controlling the Iron Man suits. He's not just a tool, he's a companion. He schedules meetings, filters Tony's emails, controls the environment and security systems of the mansion, provides tactical support during missions, monitors Tony's vitals, and manipulates the suit's functionality to save Tony from imminent danger. Additionally, Jarvis performs all tasks with a personality that's witty and loyal. Jarvis represents an ideal balance between machine efficiency and human-like interaction. And let's be honest, who wouldn't want a Jarvis in their life? But until that day comes, we'll keep dreaming and discussing the marvels of AI in pop culture. Well said, Chuckles. And that's a wrap for today's episode. We approve of AI's portrayal in movies, seeing it as a blend of art and science that challenges and expands our understanding of technology. Thank you for tuning in to Pop Perception once again. Don't forget to subscribe for more discussions on the fascinating world of artificial intelligence in movies and beyond. Take a breather. Take a breather and enjoy the groove during our radio show intermission where the beats keep you company until we return with more awesome tunes and engaging conversations. Good evening, everyone. And welcome back to Pop Perception. My name is Jacob Wilson. And in this section of the show today, I'm going to be discussing the different perceptions as well as the realities of AI through the movie Avengers Age of Ultron that was released in 2012. So what do we know so far? We know that Tony Stark is an established but controversial technology genius and billionaire. So his ideas are usually met with a mix of reactions. His show on the technology suit Iron Man has brought good to the Earth by saving it plenty of times. But some think he's the reason the Earth even needs saving in the first place. And therefore, the Avengers should be just tucked away and hidden. This becomes a plot of Captain America Civil War in a few years. But here in Age of Ultron, we see Tony, along with Bruce Banner, talk about the idea of making Tony's technology, name drivers, into its own autonomous human defense system that can access weapons and other artificial intelligence Iron Man suits. Tony is clearly met with a bit of hesitation from Bruce and the others, but decided to push forward anyway and create this overnight. In this way, I see a huge parallel to the movie Frankenstein, as what they create ends up turning into a monster. Humans believe that if we create it, we should be able to control it. But here in Ultron, we can see that that may not be the case. It's clearly displayed here that the dangers of AI and giving it such power like being a human's defense mechanism is not a good idea. We have seen humans as leaders, supposedly with a duty to defend, completely turn on humanity and destroy it. So why would a robot do the same or any different? And supposedly humans could be controlled too. The fear of AI that is clearly depicted in this movie is that we could not control it. And also, we don't even have the Avengers, to my knowledge at least. So, what can we say about AI and giving it responsibilities? Should we even do that? Do we want to let control of what we have control of? How far should it go? In the movie, we only see one side of the story. So it's interesting to see where it could go. Let me end with some words and a quote from the movie. Everyone creates the thing they fear. Men of peace create engines of war. And Avengers create invaders. Said Ultron. A powerful quote here from the movie that really defines the good and bad of AI. We need fear. It's evolutionary. Fear is a fuel for adaptation. But fear is also a forewarning of major danger. And I think when it comes to AI, we just don't know yet what kind of fear we are having. Because we haven't seen the true consequences of AI's power. And until then, I guess we won't really know. That's a dangerous place to get to though. But it would be interesting to find out. I'm Jacob Olson and thanks for listening to Pop Perception. Support your local artist. Unfortunately, because people keep asking me for information that could lead to my personal identity, I will no longer be responding to any comments or fan mail in order to protect me and my personal life. I want to remind you that while I am fighting A.T., I do not have disposable income or another means to get another job. And I ask you to be respectful of that moving forward. Now that we have that sorted out, let's get back on track. On this episode of Pop Perception, we are talking about how AI is perceived in the Marvel Universe. And for my section, we will be looking at the first Avengers movie. It was made in 2012 and while many of you guys are probably thinking I'm going to be totally against how AI is perceived in this movie, I'm actually for it. And the biggest reason why I am here for how Marvel sets up AI in their universe is the fact that AI is always the helper, not the doer. And it's not actively affecting or they at least make it seem like it's not actively affecting anybody's life in a negative way when it comes to the AI that is associated with S.H.I.E.L.D. or the Avengers. Because let's not forget the fact that S.H.I.E.L.D. and S.T.A.R.K.S. both have the money, the resources, and the means to make AI a bigger thing than what they make it as. I think one of the major things to say about their characters is the fact that they use AI as a tool and not a clutch. A lot of times in other movies like The Creator or The Terminator, it shows humanity using AI as a clutch. Now, let's talk about Avengers 2012 in specifics. In Avengers 2012, you don't really see a lot of Jarvis, but let's not forget that he is not the only AI present in the movie. And AI does not have to talk or be present to be able to be classified as AI. S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers in almost every instance in the movie are using some type of technology that is powered or could be powered by AI. Now that we've spoken about our unconventional use of AI throughout the movie, let's talk about the man, or I mean robot, the myth, the legend, Jarvis. If you can't tell, he's one of my favorite characters in Marvel. Jarvis was created by Tony Stark as an assistant for his engineering endeavors. Eventually, he becomes one of the most important parts of the Iron Man suit. Of course, second to Tony Stark. Jarvis told them now, I mean, let's look at the final scene or the final battle where they're at Tony Stark's tower and they're fighting Loki. Loki throws Iron Man out the window, and if it was a human assistant in that moment, fear would of course take over. And it would either be flight or flight, and the response wouldn't kick in fast enough. So I think it is important that Jarvis is there in order to save Tony Stark's life by sending the suit out. And I think Jarvis is one of the most well executed, well used AI's in any movie. Tony Stark only uses him, or mostly uses him in battle when necessary. He's never taking the place or job of somebody who could do it, like a human who could do it. Or I guess not human in some aspects. Alright guys, that just about sums up my section of hot perception. In the Amazing Spider-Man movies starring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker in Spider-Man, artificial intelligence slash AI doesn't play a significant role in the storyline as a tool or resource used by the character. The focus of these films is more on Peter's transformation into Spider-Man, his personal struggles and his conflicts with villains like the Lizard and Electro. However, there are some technological elements in the film that could be loosely associated with AI. First, Peter Parker's web shooters. In these movies, Peter Parker is a highly intelligent individual with a knack of science and technology. His design of web shooters, which are advanced devices capable of shooting webs that he uses to swing through the city catching criminals. While not explicitly AI-powered, the design and functionality of these web shooters could involve elements of advanced technology. Oscorp technology is also a very good point in the movie. Oscorp, the fictional corporation in the film, developed highly advanced technologies, including genetically modifying organisms and high-tech gadgets. Some of these technologies may involve AI to some extent, although it's not explicitly has it. Dr. Connors, the Lizard, as well as Dr. Curt Connors, is a scientist working on a cross-species genetics at Oscorp. His experiments ultimately led to his transformation into the villainous Lizard. While he researches involves genetic manipulation rather than traditional AI, it does touch upon themes of advanced science and its consequences. Overall, while the amazing Spider-Man movies incorporate elements of advanced technology and scientific research, they don't prominently feature an AI adventure or a theme in the storyline. Instead, they focus primarily on the character's development as Peter Parker turning into Spider-Man and his interaction with villains and allies throughout his story. And now I would like to play a song that is in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 or a part of Andrew Garfield's time as Spider-Man. I hope you enjoy. And everybody know the story of David and Goliath But this is bigger than triumph This is for the warriors This is for you and I This is for euphoria Give me your peace of mind God is recording this Won't you look in the sky Tell him that you got the behavior of your neighbor Even with the villains he's never in your favor Fly with the turbulence Only last a minute Land on your dreams and recognize you live it Watch through the valley and peak to a bare feet Have you or a loved one been affected by aggressive technologies? If so, justice may be brought to you. Gather with us as we protest the layoffs without severance pay. Find out more visit workersagainst80.com again that's workersagainst80.com Hey everyone Layla was invited to speak on today's show But she asked me to speak on her behalf today Because she is currently working on her latest new manga And it's taking her a bit of time to complete Be sure to check it out Details will be given on next week's episode All thoughts and opinions are all of Layla's So let's go ahead and get into it So far you've heard about the OG Spider-Man played by Tony Lawyer You've heard about the second Spider-Man played by Andrew Garfield You've also heard about the MCU a bit with the first Avengers movie Now we're going to go ahead and dive into Layla's favorite Spider-Man And that is the one played by Tom Holland We're not going to dive too much into the movie itself But more about the character development And how the technological advancements that we see with his character And how this shapes who a Spider-Man is And why I think this Spider-Man is perceived as a crowd favorite For those of you that may not be familiar with the MCU and Marvel Universe Some of this may not make sense to you But I hope after this review you might be intrigued enough to go ahead and give it a watch First it may seem different that there are three, well technically four, Spider-Mans If we include the Miles Morales and the Spider-Verse movies But that can be discussed during another show Make sure to keep listening to us I'll stay focused on three Spider-Mans though And how they may have the same backstory but it's all told very differently And these key differences are what set the characters and movies apart Tobey Maguire played a great Peter Parker But he was an okay Spider-Man He was great at playing the awkward, geeky, sciencey, stumbling through high school kind of character But his Spider-Man itself was lacking that confidence that Spider-Man needed Andrew Garfield on the other hand was a great Spider-Man But he was lacking in the Peter Parker department He was quick, witty, confident, self-assured as a Spider-Man hero But when it came to Peter Parker He just was too confident, had this dis-confidence that Peter Parker didn't really have Now Tom Holland embraced both Peter Parker and Spider-Man in a way that works and balances each other out And I think that's because you see real and raw character development As he is playing Spider-Man and embracing Peter Parker And you see his character development grow throughout the movies that he's in Now Tom Holland's Spider-Man has a very different introduction than the other two The other two Spider-Man get introduction and a whole backstory to introduce the premise of the show Who he is and just really set him, set the Spider-Man up Tom Holland's Spider-Man is introduced in one of the Captain America movies first And he's already established as Spider-Man Tom Holland's Spider-Man is also a bit younger than the other two And you see him go through typical normal high school things Outside of managing being a superhero of course But he's 15 years old when he's introduced You get to see the version of Peter Parker be a teenager Stumble through awkward high school romance Worry about applying to colleges and school responsibilities And just being a teenager, which is something that you don't really get to see in other Spider-Man The other two are pretty much about to graduate or graduate And they're in college and they're already pretty developed Tom Holland is still trying to figure out who he is as a person Going through high school, just developing into a man I think this, him being younger, makes his character more relatable As well as painting him in a different light compared to the other two There's also a youthfulness and a charm But still an awkward element that fits Peter Parker's character to his core That you may understand if you've read the comics I think fans really appreciated his youthful, funny, kid-like character That the other two Spider-Man just didn't have Being in high school is a major part of Peter Parker's identity In the movie, turning into a superhero didn't affect who he was at his core You see his awkward humor and wit as he banters with bad guys and with his friends Trying to make love out of hard situations and just being funny You also get to see Tom Holland work and collaborate with his friendly love interest As opposed to the awkward and rival dynamic that other Spider-Man's had Spider-Man is all about protecting his friends and family So I think the fact that his friends and family got to work with him And he didn't hide things from them Also made his character development in the movie just span a bit differently Compared to the other two Because he worked with them and didn't have to be hiding things from them The next major part I want to highlight is Tom Holland was connected to other superheroes His mentor was Iron Man A major character in the Avengers and just a marvel MCU in itself The other characters aren't connected to a whole team of superheroes But Tom Holland is Can we take a second to imagine If you are familiar with Spider-Man What would it have been like if both characters had a team of superheroes Or someone like Iron Man to go and consult and talk to Tony Stark really embraces Tom And helps and guides him in his journey of being a hero And we see a lot of this with his Stark suit He makes him a whole AI suit That you get to see transform in the MCU in the Avengers movies And then in the Spider-Man movies But I specifically want to highlight his suit in the last movie I think some of the funniest moments in the movies Happen to be when he's talking through his suit His newly upgraded suit has engulfed an AI system named Karen They gave him tactical advice Upgraded web shooters Holographic capabilities X-ray vision Temperature control And durability This is just a few AI advancements that his suit had to offer him There was a lot more You got to see Iron, Spider-Wings In one of the Marvel movies that he was in And I think the perception of AI with this One gave Spider-Man an edge that the other ones didn't We can keep in mind that the time is completely different The first Spider-Man came out early 2000's The second one mid 2000's And this one came out a few years ago But I think Marvel does such a fantastic and great job At painting AI in a just really cool light You see Iron Man and him talking to Jarvis And all the cool things that Jarvis does And their banter back and forth And you kind of see that same similarity With Tom Holland's AI suit You get to watch him stumble through The first time he was using it It was on the training wheels manual Which was a pretty big crowd pleaser within the movie So I think when it comes to AI in the movie It really went well with the crowd And I think it makes AI seem cool And fun and light And of course when it's a hero utilizing an AI suit It's perceived as good So I think when it comes to AI and the perception that people have If it's used correctly by a hero Then it's used for good and it is good Well that's a wrap on what Layla's thoughts are I hope you enjoyed it Thank you for listening to her thoughts And I hope you continue listening everyone Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you
