Lee and Reece introduce their guest, former football coach Andy Phillips. They discuss his playing days, starting from his childhood in a football environment. Andy played for various teams, including Oxford City and Whitney Town. He reminisces about the camaraderie and good times he had with his teammates. Despite struggling in the league, Andy enjoyed his time playing football and formed lasting friendships with his fellow players. A bit of a special one for both of us, isn't it? Former coach for both of us. Yeah, yeah. Obviously, we're looking forward to it. It's going to be a two-parter, playing days and management days. So, I think we should just fire straight on, do you think? We've got to do a fan on Gilo of the Week. Gilo of the Week. Sorry, mate. So, I was sat watching England against Brazil. I put some critique on Facebook and Josh Ruffles... Good critique, by the way. Yeah, Josh Ruffles slid in my DMs from ex-Huddersfield talent player. I know Josh and his old man. He said, like your critique, very carried away. He listens to every podcast, he said. He had it on his way to training most days. We had a little bit of chat back and forth and he invited me down as a guest at Oxford on Monday. So, I've been chatting up with Josh. I'm going to see him once again. He did say he'd come on, didn't he? He did, mate. He actually said, yeah. I'll have to come on once I've got my boots on. I might as well be around by then. It's only a few years. So, yeah, Josh Ruffles, Gilo of the Week. And you've won. Bar call. Right, let's move straight on, then, to our illustrious guest. So, today, we're talking about, in this episode, we're talking about his playing days. So, we have former Quarry Nomads, Maurice Moses, Whitney Town, Oxford City, Bicester Town and Killington. Legend, Mr. Andy Phillips. Welcome to the show, Andy. Hello, guys. How are you, mate? I'm very, very well, thank you. We've been looking forward to this and I think the listeners are looking forward to this. It's been an outpouring of people getting in contact. Messages and, sort of, nice little stories about you, mate. Well, I've ducked out twice before, haven't I, mate? You've got me this time. It's third time lucky, isn't it, come to think of it. It is. Excellent. So, do you listen? You mentioned you listen to a couple of shows. Yeah, I listen to a couple. You know, I'm still good mates with Fleety and, you know, I had a recent trip away with him, unfortunately. So, I listen to his. I'm not sharing your suitcase with you. No. I'll tell you some stories about Fleety later. When we get into the managerial. Well, let's get straight in then. Playing days, where did it all start? Well, it started really, I mean, I came from a football environment. I lived in Headington in Osler Road. Yeah. And my back garden went onto the halfway line at the Manor. Yeah. And I lived in the other half of a semi to Ken Fish. Yeah. Yeah. And grew up with players living either side. And as an eight-, nine-, ten-year-old, my job was to, on a Saturday after a game, to go and get their green mails and take them round. And it was inevitable that I'd be involved in football, I think, in some way. Yeah. So, there was a lab played for Oxygenited in the glory years when they played Blackburn and Preston. That was called Alan Wiley. Okay. And Alan lodged with us. Okay. So, it was a very crowded house, because I've got two brothers and a sister. Yeah. But Alan was in the first team at Oxford, and, yeah, he was like a brother really, and a big influence on me growing up. But, really, organised football. I went to Cheney School. I passed my 11-plus in those days. But I left Cheney a little older, actually. But Cheney was the only football school where everybody else played rugby. Okay. And so I headed to Cheney. Football wasn't so readily available to young age groups. I mean, like at Oxford City, at the moment we've got age groups from about six up to 18. Yeah. Then you didn't play football until you were 11, 12 at school. Yeah. I managed to get myself in the Oxford Boys Squad. Okay. And then got spotted by Wolves, and went up and down for trials, played for their A team, and then was eventually told, you've done very well, son, but you're not better than what we've got. Oh, okay. Yeah, and was moved on. And then was picked up by our fraternal, Oxford United, and played in the youth team. And in those days, the A team were in the Metropolitan League. Okay. We used to play West Ham A. What age were you then? I was 17, 18. Yeah, that's the youth team age. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But my brother played for Horry Lomas. And we sort of said, we're having trials, come up, we'll just come and do a bit of training. And at 16 and a half, 17, I found myself in Horry Lomas' first team, playing in the senior league. Okay, that wasn't worth it. It was quite rare. Oh, good days. I mean, I believe a couple of years before they won the senior cup, they were quite a well-respected team. Yeah. And did quite well for them. And then my brother moved on, so I moved on, and went to Morris Motors with Jeff Demar. Yeah, the name's been up a few times over there. Yeah, I mean, Jeff was an Ex-Oxford United pro. Did well there, scored a lot of goals in the Hellenic League at that time. Yeah. And then Morris Kyle knocked on the door one day. He only lived up the road, and I'd grown up collecting his green mail. And he said, son, come and play for Oxford City. And I'm like, what? Oxford City, to me, I thought I'd made it, playing on the White House. And I can remember, I was earning, probably, as an apprentice at Hartford Motors. Okay. Earning probably a fiver a week, and Oxford City offered me three quid a week to play football. And it's like, I thought I'd made it, I'd minted it. We haven't asked what position were you playing in. So I played wide, on the right wing. Occasionally down the middle, but mainly wide. Hurdling over tackles, and I didn't make too many tackles in my career. But no, really, really good days. And that was 71, 72 seasons, I think, for City. Yeah. But in the background, all the time, was Sunday football. Because it was massive. Yeah, back in the day, it was huge, wasn't it? My dad ran a side, called Mercury, who were in the Premier League, the Sunday League. I played for the City on a Saturday, and got to watch a game on a Sunday that I shouldn't play. Oh, we've only got two. We'll do this, I'll pop them in the back of the car. I'll get a couple of goals on a Sunday, and have to go under a false name in England. But yeah, great days at the City. I've had the privilege of playing with some good players. Jack Woodley. Yeah. I remember making my debut at Leyton Estones. We won the toss, we kicked off, and I was there with Jack, and Jack passed to me. And I thought, fuck it, I've made it. Jack Woodley has passed to me. Unfortunately, I didn't know. Over the years, I think it was 182 appearances, 42 goals for the City. That's great. Certainly a good amount, isn't it? Yeah, good days. What sort of crowds did they get back then? Not much. The City, although we were in the Ishmael League Premier, we were always a perennial struggler. There were some massive clubs about in those days. The Hendon's and Walthamstow's. Sides that were winning the amateur cup every year. We were local lads, really. Some of the lads I played with, Neil Hartigan, who I'm still in contact with. Martin Prescott. Who was the gaffer? The gaffer was Maurice Kyle. In those days, there wasn't a lot of coaching. It was just, you know, turn up, you have a run, and then a fiver, and went to the pub, to be honest. Sounds good to me. Trevor Stokes was a big influence on me in those days. I was quite a clean-living boy. I remember the latest game we finished and went to the bar. He said, would you like to drink something? I said, oh, I'll have an orange lemonade. He said, you're not having an orange lemonade. And he said, have this. And he put a man's brown in front of me. I was drunk at the time. That's not a brown ale. No, but they don't make it anymore. And that was my first alcoholic drink. And there have been several since. What was it like back then in relation to team spirit and camaraderie? Oh, it was good. We had the crack on the pitch and off the pitch. I took loads and loads of scrapes. I mean, we played at the Whitehouse Ground, which was like a five-minute walk in the town. And probably then the worst thing that happened was the head of the river opened. We couldn't wait to get training over and done with on a Thursday night. We were in there. But, yeah, good day. Great stuff. Were there any leaves or cuts or anything during your time at City? A couple of senior cuts. As I said, we were never particularly successful in the league. We were always trying to just stave off relegation. So, yeah. And that was one of the reasons, really, that eventually, after about three seasons, I left. And I moved to Whitney Town, who were in the Southern League. We were in the Southern League, yeah. The manager there was Tony Jones, another Oxford United legend. Yeah. And he offered me more money, a little bit mercenary. Yeah. Moved to Whitney. Did very well there. Played with some great players. Scored a lot of goals for Whitney. Don't know my stats, to be honest. Yeah. But good times. People like Alan Jeffries. Some of the other lads from City have moved. Trevor Stokes. Neil Hartigan. Alan Jeffries. They've called me a legend. To me, they're legends. Okay. Yeah. The people I've got the most respect for. Unfortunately, I've been to too many funerals over the last few years. Some of the people I've played with, unfortunately, are no longer with us. Yeah. So it's probably a good idea you cut to this now, because I think... I used to be an old friend of mine. You're not letting me get you in. Remind me, what was the ground called at Whitney back then? Marriott's Coast. Marriott's Coast, that. Yeah. And the barricades. Yeah. No, the shopping centre. I'll go there now and again. I'll think, I'm walking all around. I think, this is where I've come from. Brilliant. And what was it like over there? Oh yeah. I mean, similar to City in terms of training and things. I mean, Tony Jones wasn't a great coach, with respect to him. He played at a good level, but his idea of doing something different in training was running the other way round the pitch. Versatile. But we sort of self-managed. And then there was a feed change at the club. Tony went, and Rodney Smithson came in, who had not long finished playing at United. Okay. Rodney, a different character, but more of a coach. He'd been at Arsenal, and we became a little bit more organised. But the success at the premium, Rodney came and went. And then Bill Fox came, who played for Man United. Yeah. And won the European Cup. And we'd have... Well, he was great in all that, wasn't he? He came as manager. Okay, yeah. Wow. Totally different mentality. You know, he used to tell us stories. He'd work in a mine and then go training at Man United afterwards. Wow. And he was in the Munich Air Crush. Really? Yeah. And then, you know, from one training night, he brings in his European Cup and a medal. We were totally in awe of him. Did you hear a lot from him? I learned a little bit about football psychology. Yeah, good. He took me aside one day and said, you're really lucky to be playing today, son. You're not been playing too well. I said, see, I'm not as fit as you are. And I've gone out, and I said, I'll show you. And I helped them. We played... Wonked them in the FA Trophy. I think I scored a hat-trick. And I've come in, and I've gone, there you are, gaffer. And he just laughed. He was doing all right. He's done me good. He's really done me. I love that. I love that. Yeah, good days there. I think, for an effect, it was funny. Whilst I really enjoyed it there, I missed Oxford City. And I got married while I was at Whitney, which was to a smashing lady who I'm still married to. Brilliant. 50 years, actually. Yvonne, who's been really, really a key part of my career. I couldn't have done half the things I've done without her support. Because, you know, the hours I've spent on football. I don't know. Imagine. I've got two states there. Our marriage is reasonably fresh, because I've worked out... You're happy with that. Yeah, I'm happy with it. And I've worked out that for another third of it, I've been asleep. Very supportive. And listen, I'm not sure anybody who's been successful in the game would say that you have to have a good woman behind you. You're getting bollocked every time. Mind you, I've had a few of those. Too many brown hares. When I was at Whitney, I'd be home at half seven or half ten. I'd come down the road and get to the front door. And on the doorstep, there's two saucepans. One's got spaghetti and one's got bolognese. I'm out of here. I open the front door and I go through the living room. I go to the kitchen and put them on the stove and light the gas. And I remember coming down the stairs, she tapped me in the kitchen, picked up the saucepans and threw them out the back door. Yeah, that's it. Was that the last time you were late? No, no. Well, that's why you don't work, then. No. It did work. Brilliant stuff. And then, so, Whitney Town, is there, what, a couple of years? A couple of years, yeah. And some good years. Good runs in the FA Trophy. Much closer to the top of the league. Competitive at the top end of the league. And we played Barnet one day. Jimmy Greaves played for Royal Mersey. Yeah? What was he like? Well past his seven point days. Oh, okay. Probably had a drink quite recently, I think. But, you know, I'm a massive Spurs fan, and, you know, just being on the same pitch as him, it meant everything. So, yeah, a lot more competitive, but in the back was still the corner of the city. I went back, and the club had been relegated while I was away. And then we had a really good season. I got promoted. People, I mean, aside them, people like Martin Allen, Mark Taylor, the keeper, Neil Hartigan was still there, a lad called Alan Inseal, who'd moved to Australia and was unfortunately killed in a road accident. But we were a lot more competitive. Brian Thomas, who eventually became a brother-in-law, he married my sister. Okay. And we got promotion. But 15 games of the season I've gone through with the team, just to keep it a beat, and managed to score, but it clattered on him, like, hyperextended my knee. Oh, yeah. And I ended up in the Nuffield and having an operation, you know, a cartilage operation, and they sort of, like, cut him. It was not like today with keyhole surgery. Yeah. So I was out for the back end of the season when we got promotion, which was very, very frustrating. You know, we had a lad, Mark Boulden. So I was one of the older heads. Boulden was a kid then, but coming through and you could see what a player he was going to be. Two feet, good with his head, good athlete. Yeah. He went on and played for Cheltenham Town and had a good career. But we got promoted, and the following year, back into the struggle, really, with the big clubs. Yeah. Did you get reinforcements in? Money was always tight, anyway. Yeah. You know, because we were getting the gates and looking at it. The parallels we were experiencing in Oxford City at the moment. Okay. Yeah, quite similar. Yeah. You're comfortable in one league and then you move up with the big boys and it's difficult to compete. Yeah, but a couple of good years, and then it was sort of like the commitment of playing for Chelsea. I travelled on Saturday, was away up in London. Once a week or twice a week? Twice a week, yeah. I got tempted by Nigel Cassidy, of Bicester Town. Okay, yeah. Bicester were going well. Jimmy Tompkins, who you may know from Bicester. Great guy. One of my best mates. Jimmy was assistant gaffer. Okay. Got tempted to go over there. More money again? More money again? The money was good, but you weren't allowed to take it home. You had to leave the money behind the bar. Who was the chap in the bar? Because we need to come up with a leader. Creedy said that. What did he say last week? Creedy said that. If it's the same guy, Creedy. Yeah. He didn't give you your money, but you had to leave it. It's just like getting paid a drink in Mauritius. And then you go in one night, and you might be supposed to get paid a cassette bit of Toaster Races with the wages. Are you joking? Trying to double them. I've come in one night training, and I picked up, I think, five bookings, and all of them were suspended. And I come into the Bicester Town training rooms. You know, there's a door, and then left and right, and as I go through the door, Cassius begins to walk. He's obviously had a beer. I walk through the door, and he looks at me, and he grabs me by the front, and he's fumbling like this, and gets a paper out of his pocket, which is a letter from him, and he says, I'm suspended for three games. It just comes to me, and he's like, I'll fucking kill you. And I'm like, I don't know what you're talking about. Fortunately, it didn't cost us a league. That was the only Premier. We were to win it. We won it on the final day of the season, at Newbury. Again, Cass was such a character. I think we were 2-0 down at Newbury at halftime. We came in, and we're all sitting there. Nobody dared look at him. He was like a... And he just prowled up and down. I think he's going to say something in a minute. Five minutes, nothing. Nobody dares look at him or say anything. Ten minutes. The bell goes, and he's not said a word. You won't fucking play better, if you don't play any fucking worse. We've gone there. Brighton is the best. We've gone 3-2. Brilliant. Good players, again, at Bicester Town. Yeah, run us through a few of those, Matt. John Hall. Hawley. If you ask Hawley, do you want a drink, John? Yeah, I'll have a bottle of red. Okay, Ed. You're thirsty. Melbourne Pledge. Jimmy played the odd game. I can't remember his last surname. Played seven and a half hour. Rude of me, because he played at Brackley, but... Jason? Jason Allen, yeah. Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. Jason's a star. He was such a rock at the back. Looks like Mike Cairns, doesn't he? He's a great lad. I saw him over the last... We saw him over the last... How did we start? Music. Did I see him last Saturday? He was in the Highfield Club. Yeah, he's a good lad. He's over there. Yeah, he's a really good guy. I've got about retirement to play for Hallym's Berserk a few years ago. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I want us to get some footage of you and him and speak to you all playing at the back with the kit so tight. Not me, anyway. Please, Jason Allen, yeah. Yeah, Andy Barney, who now is a really successful coach in America. Okay. But, yeah, good days. Steve Bevan is another one who plays. Some of Cyril Bevan, who was an Ox United star. Okay. And then at the end of the year, Nigel decides he's going to leave the club. And he texts me aside and he said, I'm leaving, Andy. I'm just going to Banbury. Okay. He's going to ask me to go to Banbury. How would you like to take a visit to town? Did you have that little bit about getting involved with the captain too, or, you know? No. I was a brilliant student in the game, to be honest, at that point. You play lots of cup and you rely on your ability. You have to crack afterwards. You normally are. No real ambition to coach or manage. You don't look beyond your playing days. And I say to people, no, you cherish your playing days because there's nothing, managing and coaching doesn't even come close to putting the boots on. I agree, I agree 100%. I don't know, I just thought about it and I thought, what was I, probably 32. 32, I think. And I thought, it's too much. I was going to be following the most successful manager in the club's history. In my first managerial job. Now I know that because of how close we were, the lads would have stayed. Yeah. But, you know, when you play with a group, are they going to respect you? Yeah. You don't want to tarnish that relationship. No, that's right. So, I declined it. And that's when I moved to Kiddlington. I'd moved house to Kiddlington. Trevor Cuss is the name. You've probably come, I mean, Trevor's been involved in the game longer than I have. I rang Trevor and I said, I've just moved to the village and I want to come and play for Kiddlington. And he said, Andy, I haven't got any money. And I said, I don't want any money. I've done alright at the game and so, yeah, that was my first, you know, my start at Kiddlington. And after three or four years, I ended up being player manager. That seemed more natural progression. Yeah, that's right. So, go back to playing, what league were they in? Hellenic League. The Prem or what? They were in the Prem. So, we used to play Forest Green who were in Hellenic League at the time. You know, the clubs that are around now with Sorrentesters and Redundant. They were on the rise at the time. They eventually got into the Prem. Yeah, I was playing and managing which was getting more and more difficult because my knees weren't great at that time. So, eventually, that was the end of my playing days and I became the first step in the management. But in the sports we normally play Sunday football all the time. Yeah, for the one side or do you mean around the... Cold Harbour for all time with a lot of good players because Sunday football was probably, it was like the who's who. Everybody came together on a Sunday. I was actually speaking to someone about this over the weekend because the Sunwalks finals at the weekend got banged up didn't it? Apparently there's only like 30 teams was it by? Everybody got a bye? Oh, quarter finals, semi-finals, finals. Yeah, I think you meant compared to back in your day. Oh, it was the competition to win in the camp. Yeah. Probably had more kudos on the senior cup really. Yeah, did you win it? Well, it's for Cold Harbour. Yeah. Who was your Cold Harbour team? A lot of the lads I played with in the city was like an amalgam No, you've played for Harbour. Okay. Tommy Moxham who died recently went to Thomas Bure a couple of weeks ago. You know, top, top man. A lad called Keith Brakespear. But it was Alan Jeffries. A little story about Harbour, so I'm not going to tell you the real great stories about Harbour. So, we had a keeper called Neil Hurst who was, he was a young man but he was a keeper and he got the odd game and he came in the Whitney side one day to talk about Whitney but came in the side and then got left out. Stormed out. He could start a fight on the phone box honestly. He really pissed off he's been dropped and he goes up in the town in the Whitney he goes in the pub and there's just one bloke sat in the pub with a bag of scrap. I don't know how he managed it. But this story happened about him all of a sudden. Another good player did it always half the time he came out he always had the bag on and as the whistle would go to start setting off he'd flick his bag away.
