Part of the day you spend in the pool and the other part you come down to the beach it looks like. Yeah right, well as long as the ACLs are still in touch with the potholes. Oh now listen, just before you do what you do want to do, but the footy last night, I only got some scores and then some comments from friends, but has Norton done his knee? Oh it looked awful, apparently he's escaped ACL. He has, oh right. Well on the boundary line they were doing all the ACL structural tests and apparently it didn't look like it was torn but there's no way he hasn't done damage, like it looked pretty awful. He sort of got twisted and then his knee got caught underneath the tackler's body. Oh right, so he got tackled, because I've always feared he's going to kill himself going for marks because he just goes crazy. But no, this was a tackle. Yeah, his leg was stuck underneath the player and then he got tackled and kind of bent it at a bad angle. So it's only sort of a minor thing. Yeah, once again it looks like they didn't kick straight for goal. Yeah, no. Anyway, how did you go last week? The footy, we lost on your footy. Yeah, your footy, personal. Yeah, it's a recurring theme, we're sort of right in it and then we fall away in the last quarter. They got a really fast start on us. It was six goals to nothing in the first quarter, which is not good. But then we fought really hard in the middle quarters, but it just wasn't enough. We burnt all of our energy chasing the initial deficit. We were up by a point at three quarter time, but I think we were just spent by then. Right, right. Yeah, given where that sort of started, like you say, it takes a lot of effort to make it back up, doesn't it? Yeah, it puts too much pressure on yourself. You have to play perfect footy almost to win for nothing. Anyway. So, have you got an easy game coming up or not? Well, I'm actually injured. I'm out this week. My hip flex is sort of a recurring issue for me, but they're flared up and we just thought it would be best to take the conservative approach seeing as it's a long season. So, yeah, I'll kick this one out. Anyway. All right, yeah. So, the assignment is basically a radio news story that I have to create. All right, yeah. And I was just brainstorming ideas and I was like, oh, Dad, do you reckon there's any sort of newsworthy stuff going on at the tennis club? And he said, oh, well, there's been a bit of a light situation. So, my understanding of it is there's five courts. Only two of them are lit up and then you guys put a proposal in to get more of them lit up, but that got declined. Is that what's happened? That's right, yeah, yeah. I guess the tale of it was we've been keen for years to get courts or lights on the other three courts that run along Trumpet Street there. And anyway, we've looked at different possibilities. And about a year ago, in talking to council, they said that they would support us to apply for a grant from the state government, some fund they had, to fund 50% of what it was going to cost. So, we were very encouraged by that. And council at the time indicated that they would support it strongly. And therefore, our impression was that it was not a certainty, but almost a certainty. That if council said, yes, we agree, we think it's a good idea and we'll support it, that it would have got the funding to come through. And one committee member, Ernie, put in a heap of work in getting it all drawn up and getting the experts to quote on the costs and all that sort of stuff. Yeah, I just spoke to Ernie just before. Oh, rightio. Yeah, we had about a half an hour chat and the software that I'm using to record the call didn't bloody work. So, I'm pretty annoyed about that. He'll do it again. Well, that was like you said, a five minute interview. And I thought it could take longer than five minutes. But I know you were going to ring Ernie. Yeah, Dad warned me it might be a long one with Ernie. That's right, yeah. Well, I'll paraphrase it a little bit. The other guy, Victor, said you were going to call him as well. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, well, that's a good thing to do and he's prepared to do it, so that's fine. And there's different, I mean, what you get is slightly different stories from probably the three of us. Ernie was by far the most passionate. Oh, no, Victor was very keen to have it because it would mean they could do a lot more coaching, you know. But Victor, Ernie was very passionate. I was keen to support it, but, you know, I wasn't going to die for it sort of thing. Anyway, so there was a good case that if we got those lights it would, you know, service a lot more people who wanted to play at night to get coaching or, you know, to play socially because, you know, they work during the day and night times are, you know, where they could play. So, yeah. So, I mean, so far the story is, so then we got notification from council only about two weeks ago saying that they had been knocked back on the funding. So that was quite disappointing. The way they put it was, oh, it was always a bit of a long shot. Well, that's not what they'd ever said to us in the past, you know. We thought it was almost a certainty. So, anyway, we were knocked back there and one of the reasons they gave this, the state government gave money to people who had sort of emergencies rather than just wanted to expand like we did. But whether that's true or not, I don't know. Yeah. Yeah. So was software clicking? There's a clicking noise all the time. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I'm not doing that. I'm not sure what that is. It could be. I'm not sure what that is. Yeah, so what was your initial reaction when it got knocked back? Oh, it was a great disappointment because I knew a lot of people, you know, were very keen to have it happening. Both from the, you know, potential for the coaches, people who wanted to book the court casually, and also it would have given us a chance to have night competition teams as well. So, you know, everyone was disappointed. I wasn't flattened about it. And, you know, Bernie immediately was on the front foot saying, well, is there any other way? And one of our other committee members pointed out there was, you know, a thing through Tennis Australia that we might be able to apply for something, and that's what we've done. But it would only be, I think, for a third of the funding, so that would mean, you know, we'd have to put more money up than originally planned. Yeah. And that's – we've put a submission in, and we've also said to council, can they think of any way that you could make up that difference between the 50% we'll give and the 30% that we're now applying for? Yeah. And do you feel there's a sense of sort of neglect by the government or council, especially considering there's a bit of salt in the wound when you look over in the Lawn Bowls Club as lights and then old Scotch is lit up like a Christmas tree? Yes. Yeah, we feel a bit like the poor cousins, I suppose. Yeah, I accept reality. Again, the Bowls Club has been – and I don't know exactly how they finance their things, but we're told they've got a fair bit of funding from the council, which we haven't. So, yeah, I'm disappointed that council keeps sort of putting, you know, not restrictions on us, but policing what we do and telling us what we've got to do, but then haven't been able to come through with the funding for something that we think is a very worthwhile project. Yeah, let down a bit by council. You know, the problem at the moment is governments at all levels are, you know, with the cost of living crisis and all this sort of other costs that are there, and especially the Victorian state government, money's a bit hard to get, you know? Yeah, for sure. Yeah. One of the things the Bowls Club – sorry? Yeah, you go. One of the Bowls things, the Bowls Club, they've been quite active in getting sponsorship to things, and we really haven't gone down that path. And, you know, that's one of the things, you know, we may be looking at too is just, you know, do we try and, you know, get sponsorship from some groups? But, you know, the trouble is that usually comes with some sort of obligation that, you know, you've got to let them, you know, send messages to your members or run functions and stuff like that. So, you know, at the moment we've been run as a nice, happy club that just, you know, gets on and does stuff for, you know, what most of the members want. So this is taking still a bit of a bigger picture thing. So, yeah, disappointed, but I understand as well. Yeah. Yeah. Do you think that the decision will impact the participation level of members? Well, I don't think it will impact what's, you know, we've had a sort of steady sort of situation for years. But, you know, we saw it as a way of growing the club, you know, and growing the level of activity. And given Council and, you know, Tennis Australia as well, you know, they've urged us to sort of take casual bookings, you know, rather than just be a membership club, but to, you know, take casual bookings because they recognise that, you know, there's a market out there for people who don't want to commit every week or, you know, just want to, you know, casually off the cuff book courts, you know, and play some tennis. And that, you know, that limits what we can do when we've only got two courts with lights on them. Yeah, for sure. Yeah, so what do you reckon the extra benefits would be of having all the courts lit up as opposed to just a few? Oh, well, I think, you know, one, it would benefit some of our current members who like to play at night but find it hard to get a court. It would certainly benefit Booker Court people because we know that, you know, there's unmet demand. We have people contacting us and, you know, trying to book courts at night and they can't do it really because we just, you know, we've either got permanent bookings or coaching going on. And then thirdly, and this is, you know, why Victor's been so keen on it is that it would certainly open up more time for coaching, especially of adults. You know, our coaches, you know, Tim and the rest of them, I don't know what the percentage is but a vast percentage of their coaching would be for kids, you know, because they can do it during the daytime. But for people who work, I think there'd be potential to, you know, get a fair bit more business through casual bookings. Yeah, no doubt. All right, perfect. Well, yeah, I don't think I have too many more questions. All right, well, if you do, just give us a call back. The reception seems pretty good here. They said you can't get reception in the units. Well, I'm in the unit and it's fine. So, yeah, if you want to clarify anything. I don't know whether I should recommend you ring Ernie back. Oh, well, yeah, I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to help me out. My pleasure. Rightio, and, well, good luck when you play again. Well, I'll see you back anyway. Will it affect your golf or just your footy? Oh, no, I'll be able to play golf, no worries. Right, all right, good, good. All right, OK then, Lach. All right, thanks, Russell. Give us a call back if you want anything else. Rightio. See you. Bye. Bye.
