The speaker discusses whether social media can be used in the classroom. They believe it should be kept separate, as it can be distracting. However, they acknowledge that certain platforms like Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram could have some utility in specific classes like technology and photography. The speaker also shares their personal experience of being distracted by social media in the past. They admit to using Facebook to connect with students, but have taken breaks from it due to its time-consuming nature. Overall, they prefer using Facebook as their main social media outlet. Thank you for joining us on our podcast today. Our first topic of the hour is, is social media, can it be utilized in the classroom? Any thoughts on that? My thoughts are, I don't believe that social media can be utilized in the classroom. I feel like it should be something that they do outside the classroom. I think it might be a lot, like, distracting. And the classrooms that I believe it might be useful in would probably be technology because there are some things that are on Facebook like images and sound that you could utilize in technology. Also, I think Snapchat and Instagram might be utilized in photography class. There are definitely a lot more distractions in social media. The reason why I don't think that social media should be utilized in the classroom is because I remember back in the day we were on MySpace in our computer lab and we were going on people's profiles. You get distracted. You're doing one thing and then the other minute you're writing a message to your friend across the hall. So, yes, it's fun and a lot of our technology swag came from, you know, building on MySpace pages. But also, I'm going to admit, we were not focused and probably missed a few assignments because we were on MySpace. Yes, I do use Facebook. I use Facebook more than any social media outlet. I use Facebook to keep up with my students, posting pictures. During the school year, I did take a Facebook, you know, break because I did notice how much I was on it and how much time it was taking from me. So, honestly, Facebook will be my main outlet and I do use Snapchat for pictures and different filters. I do like how Snapchat has the filters. Thank you very much.
