Hello guys and welcome back to Roland Radio. In today's session we'll be listening to four songs from the genre Alternative Indie between the years 1990 and 2010. The Alternative Indie music genre is a broad category that composes a wide range of styles and sounds. Within the Alternative Indie genre you can find sub-genres such as Indie Rock is categorised by its DIY ethos. Indie Rock often features guitar-drum melodies, introspective lyrics and rejection of mainstream trends. Indie Pop, known for its catchy melodies, bright productions and assessive songwriting, Indie Rock combines elements of pop music with indie sensibilities. Alternative Rock merges in the years 1980s and 1990s as a counter-culture response to mainstream rock music. It composes a diverse range of sounds from grunge and post-punk to shoegazes and garage rock. Dream Pop is categorised by its astrospheric soundscapes, ethereal vocals and dreamy melodies that often incorporate elements of shoegaze, ambient and psychotic music. Folk Rock combines traditional folk music with elements of rock and roll, resulting in a sound that is both roosty and contemporary. The term Alternative Music emerges in the late 1970s and early 1980s to describe music between the mainstreams. It comes about because musicians wanted more creative freedom outside of big record labels. Alternative Music includes many styles like Punk Rock, Indie Rock and others. Bands like Orym and The Smith helped popularise Alternative Music. Since then, it has kept evolving and becoming more diverse. So while Alternative Music becomes a big deal in the late 20th century, it started early and kept changing over time. The four songs that we will be listening to today are Beautiful Day by U2, Work Song by Hozier, Losing My Religion by Orym and You Somebody by Kings and Leon.
