Tenenbrae is a special prayer service in the Roman Catholic Church. It involves seven readings with music and hymns. Candles are extinguished and lights are turned off after each hymn. The service ends with the removal of the Paschal Candle, symbolizing the burial of Jesus. It is a time of grief and reflection. You can attend Tenenbrae at St. Joseph Church on March 27th at 7 p.m. Tenenbrae, known as the Service of Darkness, is a unique and special time of prayer in the calendar of the Roman Catholic Church. The service contains seven readings with musical reflections and hymns provided after each reading. Following each hymn or song, a candle is extinguished and a set of lights in the church is turned off. At the end of the final reading, the Paschal Candle is removed from our mist, signifying the burial of our Lord in the tomb. The darkness provides a stark visual that our Lord is slowly but surely left alone in the darkness of the world, fraught with sin. And we grieve.
