Teachers and student teachers often have negative stereotypes about families in poverty, which can impact their professional practice. It's important to address these views before they start teaching. Some student teachers are unsure about recognizing poverty in their students, and 28% worry about not being able to identify students in poverty. One stereotype is that children in poverty will fail in school, but that's not true. Some students in poverty are motivated to succeed and improve their circumstances. Poverty is not the student's fault, and economic factors play a significant role. We need to eliminate these negative stereotypes and work together as a community to support our students and their families. So, on this slide, I would like to discuss the stereotypes of poverty. Teachers and student teachers tend to hold very negative views about families from poverty. These negative views can and will affect our future teachers' professional practice, hence why it's so important to try to eliminate these negative views before they start teaching. Some of the student teachers did acknowledge that anybody, at any point in time, can find themselves affected by poverty directly or indirectly, and 28% of the student teachers vocalized that they are not sure if they will be able to recognize poverty in their students whenever they become teachers, so that's almost 30% is kind of a good chunk that is worried about not being able to identify their students that are living in poverty. Another stereotype is that they believe children who are living in poverty are going to fail at school, which is completely incorrect. It is a stereotype, so not all students who are living in poverty are going to fail. Some students living in poverty have great success because they want to strive to do better than what their family has done, so sometimes living in poverty is a good motivator for students to try to rise above what they're living in, so that way they don't have to continue to live this way. It is never the student's fault for them living in poverty. If poverty is considered economical due to the wages that we earn in today's society and stuff like that, so a lot of the times that has great effects on whether families are living in poverty or not, so I just wanted to go over some of the stereotypes because it seems to be very stereotypical, negative views, and we just need to focus on eliminating those negative views, that way we can better help our students and our students' families as well because we are a community, so we must work together.
