Talk: 19890406-Larry_Rosenberg-UNK-anapanasati_full_awareness_of_breath_series_tape_8-33811 Leandra Tejedor Start_time: 00:36:10 Display_question: I'm thinking about driving, and how I've been drawn to being with the breath more, as I'm driving. Keyword_search: breath, driving, mindful, mindfulness, skillful, intervention Question_content: Questioner: But it sometimes seems to not particularly helpful. I'm thinking about driving, and how I've been drawn to being with the breath, more as I'm driving. And that creates a problem because I find that the pants that I need to wear to connect to my breathing while I am driving or when I get into my truck to drive a distance, I'm undoing my belt. And when I get to where I'm going and out of the truck and put the belt back up and it is inconvenient. It is much more enjoyable to be breathing while I'm driving with the more abdominal breathing, freer flowing. Larry: We may have to get you fitted with special pants, just for driving to work, and breathing. Jacqueline could take care of that. They'll be stylish. Questioner: It just reminded of the experience that many people have, which is that as they begin to meditate, I think it's common for a lot of people, it will seem as though more problems are being discovered or more problems where we didn't have so many before. Larry: Yeah. No, exactly. But then the key thing is that, especially in action, and certainly in driving, is the paying attention to the breath helping you be more mindful in the activity. Otherwise, we don't want to create, oh, I'm just having so wonderful, to be breathing in, breathing out, as you crash into a Mac truck. It's a really simple test. Is it helping you be alert to what your real job is in that moment, which is driving in a fresh way? Because if it isn't, drop it. Remember, the key thing is the mindfulness. And if the breath helps you to do that, then by all means use it. And if it doesn't, then don't. Questioner: The only thing that I found that really helps bring me back to the present while driving is the breath, and it helps me with driving also. Larry: Then that's good. Questioner: I don't feel like there's an alternative, because I can get into my truck and say, okay, I'm just going to be with driving. But it's not as easy. I need something more tangible. Larry: The mind thirsts for objects all the time, and all we're doing is we're giving it one that really helps us rather than it…otherwise, it's just all over the place. So, it's a skillful intervention. End_time: 00:38:58
