The speaker talks about their current day and how their quarter in school is going. They mention being a senior and graduating soon. They discuss their decision to add a minor in real estate and their excitement about it. They also talk about watching real estate shows and mention a trip they took to East Asia with their business school. They briefly mention the experience of studying abroad and share some highlights of the trip. Hello, I'm doing good. It's a Friday. It's amazing weather out. I love it. I know. So, how are you? What have you done today? It's like week three in our quarter and we're off to the races. I know business club, we had the beach restaurant. That went well. We had real meat. Off campus. Off campus, off campus. I love it. But yeah, I can just talk about a little bit how my quarter's been so far. Okay, so it's my senior year this year. I'm going to be graduating in June. I'm so excited. It's a little scary because it's like, yeah, like I'm like, okay, I'm in school, right? And then I have like my job, but it's time to focus on that stuff. And it's like take what I got from these experiences and then now apply it. It's not just like take it all in leadership. So it's a little scary because it's like it's however much work you put into it is like what you're going to get out of like the work you're putting or I guess the experience that you've been putting in. Which is crazy because, okay, I don't think it was till like this summer. I don't know why, but for context, so I'm a double major business marketing and business management. No, no, okay. Okay, so I came in the class of 2020 and I didn't know I was a double major until the end of my spring quarter of my first year. And then I look on my portal, right? And it's like you're a freshman. It's new and it says accounting and I was like, that's not for me. But then I changed it to management and I'm still going to finish in four years. That's one of the pluses about coming here for years. I'm also getting a minor in real estate. So that's exciting. I have never heard of a real estate minor because you're one of the first. I think so. Okay, so it's new. So it started in 2020 is like the date that they actually opened it. I didn't know about it till basically the maybe the end of my sophomore year, like winter, spring quarter. And I was like, oh my, it's like all these shows that I've been watching, like a real estate. I watched it. No, you want to know what's crazy? They don't actually sell houses. Yeah, it's staged. So it's like they might have sold those houses maybe because they're still like licensed real estate, you know, sellers, but it's actually staged and they're coming out with a new season. And even though stage, I'm still going to watch it. Yeah, but I follow them on Instagram. So on Netflix, I didn't see it, but they're in there like really nice dresses. Season four, right? I need to catch up. No way. So it's live now, season six. Oh my gosh. Okay, I'm good. I'm going to watch this after this, guys. Yeah, so I'll just kind of preference with how I guess that opportunity came about. So like I said, I, you know, always enjoyed watching shows. Like when I was at home, I would scroll through the channels. One, I love cooking shows. I don't know why. Wait, did you watch the British baking show? Wait, on Netflix? Yeah, I've seen that. But anyway, so it stemmed from that. And I just kind of like would have catch myself watching real estate shows or like people selling properties. I forgot. There's this one that just always plays like on the cable TV. And it's just like, you know, they're selling houses or like he's flipping it. I don't know. I forgot what he's called. But so basically I would watch that. And then when I found out that the minor was offered, I went and met with the advisor from last year. And she was like, Patricia, we miss you. And so I found out I was going to graduate a quarter early. And then she was like, so here's what's going to happen. So you can graduate a quarter early if you overload your winter quarter. And I was like, hmm. And then I was like, what are the other options? Because I know the real estate minor, I'd like only briefly just heard that that was an option. She said you can also do that. And what you do is like the way we set it up is that I take a real estate course per quarter. And then I literally each quarter I take one and then it helps me. Like I think I just have to take two in one quarter. It's like a management. But it counts as real estate. And then I can graduate with it. So my spring quarter, I'll be finishing my seventh class to get the real estate minor. Yeah. So I have the option to kind of graduate a quarter early. I in that moment, I was like, maybe think about, you know, 2020 of like I leave with a class. I got online. I went to a public school. So the like, I just remember in March of 2020, everything closed like a public school. No, I just remember it. I'm like, it's such a blur to like think that's already almost four years ago. Like, OK, three and a half. Yeah. Like I just kind of remember like I was in I was in AP government and then I was struggling. OK, I was struggling. And then and then my professor and my teacher was like, hey, so we just got an email that school is going to, you know, we're going to go an extra week for spring break. And then at the time, everyone was like, oh, my gosh, that's amazing. Like who wants to go to school? Right. And then little little do we know? Dude, it's such a crazy time. But I like I have this picture. It's somewhere up in my room at home in San Diego. It's the last picture I took with my friends like before school like ended. So we put the like phone on the ground. We all leaned over and it was like a rainy day that day. And we all did this and we're like school spring break for two weeks. Yay. So I have that picture and it's just kind of crazy to think back and, you know, kind of think that like it was a good thing that that happened. But then we went online for a year plus. So that's kind of crazy to just think about that. But I think in the way that like what that helped me shaped to where I am, let me made the decision to, you know, add the minor. Yeah. Cheris's time in the moment that I was like, okay, should I add the minor and just like push it out to the four years instead of graduating a quarter early? I was thinking of like the experience that I didn't get from that senior year. I was like, oh, my gosh, like I didn't get that experience. I don't want to have to miss out on any other experiences, even though like I achieved graduating a quarter early, which I think is great if you decide that, obviously. But like in my specific scenario, I was like, oh, I got that taken away from me. Like I feel like I can't lose any more than when I already lost, which is a hard decision to come with because I was like, you know, I could have done like a, I don't know, like a three week vacation somewhere. Wouldn't that happen? Yeah. And and I was actually lucky to do that this summer. Something offered through the School of Business is that they offer a summer abroad. Basically, when you schedule for eight units or eight units plus of business classes, you're taking these summer courses online and you actually get a trip out of it. So we went to East Asia this summer, which is something I would have actually never imagined myself doing, which is so crazy. This is they've done it a few years pre-COVID, but this is actually like the first year they're going to try to start doing it every year from now on. Of course, like alternating it every so year. Oh, yes. Yes. Jackie was supposed to come. No, it was like seven. No, yeah, it was pricey. So it's the price of tuition. So you're paying the eight units of tuition. And then I don't know the exact financials. Mm hmm. Yeah. Yeah, I was like, if you guys are trying to study with the GSB abroad, I would definitely try to make it a point to go abroad and see different perspectives and cultures. Of course, I wasn't able to, but, you know, I would totally recommend if you guys can do. And what were some highlights of that? Yeah. Oh, my gosh. It was amazing. So we I'm sorry. No, that's like I think, too. Maybe you can come back as an alum and be like, hey, guys, can I like work and help out the school business and go on this trip? Like maybe it'd be like, I don't know, something we'll find out. But but basically we left beginning of July. So it was all together with travel at three week, I guess, you know, being abroad. So it started off as you have to make we're meeting beforehand or having the meeting. So you want to make sure everything's prepped. And then when we did leave, we stayed a night in Osaka, Japan. Crazy. Osaka. I couldn't tell you, but if I look it up, maybe I can come back and tell you where to in part two. But basically spent a night there. It was probably like almost 11 hours on the plane, but they feed you. So it's like the planes I have, like, I don't really travel out of the country often. You know, it's I my family, we try to travel every summer, like from state to state. But this is like my first time for like a long time going out of the country. So you have like the plane and it's like the three side seats and then you have a four seats in the middle. It's a huge giant plane. You got first class. Then there's a little mini curtain. Then you go back. I was a little farther back, but I was close to a bathroom. Yeah, I was looking at first class. I was like, one day, one day I'll come back and then I can just like, like fully lay down and sleep on the plane. But that was an experience. You know, after a while of sitting down, you get a little, you get a little comfy, you get a little crampy. You have to like walk around. They feed you lunch. And then you're going through like a when you get there, it's like a time change. So then it was nighttime by the time we got there because we left kind of afternoon time from LAX. Then we got there and we were tired from traveling. And then we get to this hotel and there's a dinosaur at the check-in table, like a robotic dinosaur. Yeah. Like, OK, I, you know, I'll tell you why I'm trying to find this picture. But so Dr. Chua, he is the main one that plans this trip. He also does this trip with honors. Yes. Amazing. So he like goes up and he was like, you know, trying to find our like hotel rooms, making sure that we all like we're getting the rooms, our room key. And then we look and we're like, oh, my gosh, there's dinosaurs. And then you go up to it and it does a motion. It's literally two dinosaurs. And we're like, what is this like Disneyland? Like it's like animatronic. It's it's pretty funny. We're tired. We're hungry because we're supposed to eat at the restaurant like there. And then we had to call customer service so the dinosaurs can help us. But they were there and they kind of like scare you. We have a video of like one of the people going there. It's like scary, but I'll try to find a picture later. But so we did that. We got dinner. You know, they it's the culture that they bow and you bow back out of just kind of like, yeah, courtesy. You want to make sure to like one thing they know is you want to be really respectful. Do a little bit of research or if you know, prior research. Yep, because you don't like you're a visitor in this country and you want to obviously respect like the items that they follow and then just make sure you're doing that because obviously it's here different in America. And then you just want to make sure you like the things you would do here. If they're not okay there, you just gotta, you know, just be careful. So that's my advice to it. I think everyone on the everyone there was respectful and like we did the research before but just something to note to You don't even think about it and you're like wait, this is like a group. I think it's a really good group. We definitely all got really close. I think it was just like the time we all spent together to like traveling and like we all got to experience that experience together. It's just amazing. But then after that we did Penang, Malaysia after and then we did Singapore and then we did Kuala Lumpur. So crazy stuff and then on the way back we actually landed in Tokyo or we took and you know, like a turbo subway thingy to get to Tokyo and then like one of the highlights you like this is the last day before I'm coming home. We walked the Shibuya crosswalk where like hundreds of people can cross at the same time. Yeah, like it's literally like it probably goes like maybe four or five ways like it crosses like this like this and then like one more. So people just with their umbrellas. They're crossing. It's a hot humid day out. I'm like I'm wearing sweats and a short sleeve from like the plane, you know, you want to be comfy and like oh wow. I'm just like out here walking on this like famous walkway. It's so great. It was such an experience that I'm just going to forever like be grateful for that I did that and I definitely advise people do like even if it's not that you can travel with the language program to get your to get your language certified Spain, Italy. I know some friends. I went to Italy. It all looks so much fun. And then the like I won't see him for the rest of the quarter and I'm like, hey, where were you? Yeah, and they're like I did a quarter in Italy and I was like, I want to do a quarter in Italy like pick me. Yeah, you can extend your four years or like five years. Yeah, make sure you're financially there and also ready to move on with the world. Exactly. Exactly. Yeah, such an experience though. Being a DSB boss, how has that helped you? How do you like the job? Like when do you have to plan for events? Yeah, you know, like I know when I talk to love in the summer for doing the podcast. She was already doing stuff for week five. We're two months out. Yeah. Like if you're trying to do something with DSB or anything and even if people around you are not that much organized, make sure you're prepared to step in and make sure everyone is on top of things as well as just look ready to execute when needed. You see various times that last year when we wanted to do something, but just because planning or something happened like we couldn't do it just because we didn't have to plan things like that. So you guys being DSB, I know you guys are on top of things because of Loveland. Yeah, that's her Loveland. She's amazing. Yeah. Everyone should have a Loveland in their life. Just because like if you want something done and if you want someone to believe in you and want to be hard on you, like not necessarily hard, but like she knows how to trade you for the reward and like not to then you're right, but also to just raise you up. Yeah, no, I think definitely there's a lot of prep work and the word that we always use is I can start using this to like my junior year. It's like there's a lot of logistics that come into play. That word is crazy. So logistically there's a lot of planning to make an event be an event and just kind of like all the prep work that goes in it. I think it just being on like the school business team. It's allowed me to see all the black behind the scene prep work how much work goes into making an event happen. And then I take that and like say I'm going to say I'm going to a concert, right? I'm like looking around. I'm like, oh wow, they have their logo. They have like the seeds like everything is planned before and then you're only of course like as a guest you were going to enjoy it. You want to make the most of it, but the people planning it they want to make sure that the guests enjoy themselves. They have food. We always want to provide food and feel like like that's kind of us. Yeah, I think too. We have a lot of foodies in the school business and it's you know, it's always something to just bond over food. Like I feel like I do that a lot with friends. It's like hey, like what are you doing? Oh, you want to go get some food? Yeah, even if you don't have friends call us and we can go with you. Yeah, I love Boba. Okay, so I mean I'm from San Diego. So there's like home ones that I go to but over here. There's probably we cater a lot of R&B tea. So when we get it here, I'll like drink it there. It's like for my college budget. It's a little pricey. Just a little pricey. Oh, yeah, it's more of like the like the fruit being the tea base and I'm more like I like a smoothie. I like a sweet one. So I used to go to this one's open till midnight Tim's Boba. Oh my gosh, it's like 25 minutes away, but we would make the drive. We would make the drive. Oh, yeah. Okay. So a Momo is good too. I like that one. Oh, yeah, really? Yeah, I think too. Like I just kind of used to be like a smoothie with Boba girl and I was like I miss them and I and then I started trying like the drinks with the tea and I was okay. Maybe I like the more sweeter one or like matcha. I need like caramel drizzle in it or something. So so that's just kind of what it might go to but the good thing is we'll always have that a campus too. I think why like campus wide really likes Boba. I've been seeing like events just have the Boba or we'll do like cupcakes a ramen night. Oh my goodness. Salsa did a ramen night. Yeah, they did a ramen night and I went and it's like they have like, you know, the hot water you put it in it was like a station and I was like I need this like really. Yeah, but just to kind of just kind of bring it back to like what I've been seeing of like the logistics of all that. I feel like I'm going on to my third year being on this team of the school business. So I got hired my sophomore year as we were going in person. So it was basically my my freshman. It was my sophomore year like academically, but I felt like a freshman because it was my first year really ever. I mean we both want to it's like being on campus moving in. It was like shorts and a shirt. Like I wasn't expecting like I was like I was expecting like 80 degrees. Yeah, I was expecting no rain. No, no like snow. I was just like in there. Oh my gosh. You know, it's trends but we can talk about showers part two, Yeah, it was all new. I feel like whenever I like approach something new it's kind of like okay, take it all in but like make sure to you're like enjoying it because I feel like I was like, okay, like getting the dorm ready. Like I have to get all this I need like a mini fridge and like I was going, you know, like just by like the things that like the website would say you need but I would just say like go in like you if you have like a roommate. I got a assigned roommate when we took our quiz. I was like, I'm Melissa. No, it was Melissa. So yeah, I miss you Melissa. She did amazing. But yeah, she so she was my first roommate random assigned roommate. You do like application. It's kind of like a like a dating application. Like you're filling in if you're a morning person, are you clean? Are you messy? Do you what do you enjoy? And then we got a sign and I was like, we get an email, right? And I was like Melissa, Alyssa that kind of rhymes. I was like someone who set this up was being funny. So we meet and I come so when I was on the team, I came a week early before school started to do leadership training. So leadership training is basically where like the we've been doing the prep work. I got onto the team, but it's kind of like we're already putting the stuff into play. I was all new. So everything I didn't really know much. I just knew I had to go to the school business for training. We were going to do headshot pictures for our LinkedIn. We were going to do other items and then I was running the social media. Oh my goodness. We were actually doing that. So future us this so there's an event is an event October 19th called meets firms and it's our 40th. It's Sam Croft meets firms and it's basically where we invite third-party firms companies, you know family businesses small businesses and we have them represent themselves and this is like, you know, like it's like we're Convention Center like we can hold a lot of people here at the school business and it's amazing to see third-party come in. Have you seen the guest list yet? We just finalized it yesterday. Oh my this is like yeah, this is like future. So I guess I guess now that you've attended you saw them but if you were able to see basically the guest list future us speaking that's hard to be like in like present time. I know but here let me get the list real quick. So so we just finalized it yesterday and this is going to go out to everyone in like an email, but it already went out to the like not the students yet, but to all the people that are making like the event happen. So it's like here. I'll just show you Jackie. So it's meet the firms is a countdown. This is the website and then you scroll down and it's all of them. So I'll just talk about the ones we've seen every year here. You can scroll through. So while Jackie's looking I'm just going to say we've had a lot of we have a lot of hospitals through the Seventh-day Adventist Community Adventist Health that come a lot. They do luncheon. So it's really the opportunity to get the experience of before you meet them. I meet the firms. I mean you would already have met them. You're doing a luncheon with them interesting. You're doing a luncheon with them and you kind of get the like it's like in a group setting downstairs in our conference room. You get to have lunch with them. You get to ask questions more one-on-one style, of course in like a group setting but more one-on-one with the speaker and that and I we work really hard to get that happening so that we can set up the students with an internship with with the experience that they need and it's also skills to like I forget that whenever I'm doing these events. I'm also gaining like like talking skills, you know, the soft skills that I feel like always come into practice. I feel like to in 2020. I was just you know in my room going on you can send it to yourself too because we're going to share there. It's going to get shared soon, but it was like I was losing those soft skills because I wouldn't interact as much with people and then I got a job in the summer and I was like, I don't have an emoji. I'm sorry. Okay. I just went through and I went through and put everyone's name in lowercase. I know it's not grammatically correct, but if I couldn't see it in in capital letter, I put everyone's name and last name in lowercase. I took off all emojis. I had like I played soccer for 12 years and all I played soccer you play soccer. Wait at your high school. Yeah. Oh my goodness. I played for my high school and but I also play like competitive club. Yo, you look good. I wouldn't say that. I would say that but I experienced I was like a veteran soccer player. I played for 12 years. I would actually have to my home field was over here in Silver Lakes. Do you send to yourself? Okay, my home field was here in Silver Lakes. It's in Corona. So my parents would drive me two hours every like basically every weekend to be a soccer kid and I was just sleep. I would have my little blanket my little pillow. My mom would wake me up like 10 minutes before she's like get ready. And then like now that I think about I'm like every time I drive home. I complain but they did that every weekend for me and I'm just like I need to be more appreciative of them guys. So so I really appreciate them a lot. I feel like I should have told them more because I was like, you know, they're spending their like free time the days that they're off from work to like take me to do soccer and I'm just my future kids. I'm gonna remember to tell them to be grateful. Yeah, and that was our home field. So over here was considered our home field and we would have like tournament games and like League games. So we would every Friday. No every Saturday and Sunday. We would come play crazy. So should we take a break or give us like a rundown of we already said meet the firm. I can talk about my club a bit about the rundown of events. Oh, but wait, did we talk about that? We talked about Beach Day briefly. Yeah. And then we'll talk about the corner work process. We like to interview our guests and state their opinion on what is truth. What is love and what is purpose and Alyssa said in a text that she I think a lot of people have a lot more to say about love and truth and purpose. But we're going to talk about that. So but before let's hear about her club. Yes. So yes, I'm going to talk about that after our little break, but so I'll talk about my club just for preference for those who just don't know like anything about it. That's completely okay. We have four clubs in the school business and this is only like through the school business. We have a lot of clubs on campus. I'm going to start going to crochet club or don't stitches for Jesus crochet club. She does that. So I started crocheting in the summer. I'm digressing but I started crocheting in the summer and I was like, like, thanks to my friend a clay and then my roommate now Allison. She they all started crocheting and I was like guys have to hop on and so I started crocheting and it wasn't good and then I started practicing. So now practice makes perfect. Yeah, though that but so those are like, you know campus clubs, but specifically in the school business. We have accounting and Finance Society and then the acronym for that AFS we have NBI Nunez business incubator. We have investment club and then we have my club business club and I've actually been like an officer slash leader for three years now because I joined my sophomore year as a marketing director just to kind of gain that marketing experience. I wanted to just soak everything in and then the next year the prez before me was like, hey, do you want to be president and I was like, do I have the skills to do that? Brandon is Brandon Natasha. Like she's an active president. Oh, we miss you. But yeah, so so at the time to they had asked me they were like, you know, are you wanting to take up this leadership position and I was like, okay, let's do it. And then they trained me like that winter spring quarter. I got the experience that I need but of course, I feel like you're always growing to like even though they train me you're always adapting to like that school year and like the needs of it. So then first year I was like, okay, where do I want to take this club like it's hard to kind of be like, okay, we have like our you know, like every club supposed to have their constitution like it's kind of just like the built-in rules of like officers and my clubs unique and that it's stemmed from the Dean's team which are workers, but this business club is all volunteer work just to basically enhance the professional and social development for the students. So this is like all items for students. Of course, we invite like faculty staff and professors to it, but that's what I wanted where I want to take it. So now I'm on year two and we just like how you said Jackie we just finished Beach Day and we had a really good turnout. It was at Corona them our Newport Beach and you know, a lot of like behind-the-scenes planning went into that a lot of planning and I think to like we had collaborators help us so many collaborators. We thank them so much for all their help. And I think just like having that and doing that we got more from like last year to this year. We have a lot more collaborators and then I had like I made a whole like five section spreadsheet and I was like guys I did this one year and I was like now that I'm taking it. I'm going to make like I printed out the spreadsheet of inventories. We did like two Costco runs and so much goes into the planning, but I feel like to just seeing people enjoy it at the beach is like what makes it most worth it and it just makes me happy like I might be a little stressed at the beach, you know, just a little bit like if there's there's hiccups in like the planning it might be a little stressful. But as long as the people that are attending are enjoying it, it's a nice day. That's really all that matters. Yeah, no. Yeah, it's crazy too because it's like until you're going into the event, you don't know if like you can kind of anticipate what might be the issues like little hiccups that come in the way but until you're actually physically doing it and you're in that of course like I have amazing officers and like everyone that helped Jackie was on camera duty. Like she was like, hey, I was like, hey and she saw I was busy. She's like you need any help and I was like, oh my gosh, we need to get like some content and I was like, let me pass you the camera. Yeah. Also like my ability to like get people together and things like this that believes in what I'm going to grow. Yeah, this is like leadership and her ability to bring people together and execute a plan and make a plan and make sure everybody is on the plan. Thank you. Oh, that's so sweet. Thank you. It's definitely not a one-person job. I feel like it's so many people. Like, you know, like when someone wins like an Emmy or a Grammy and they're like, I want to thank this person and they're going down the list like that's me. I'm thinking like Loveland. I'm thinking Dean Thomas. I'm thinking all my officers you guys like everyone that made it happen. I was just like I was like after the event. I'm so tired. I was like I need to I need to thank them. Like if I thank them there verbally, I want to make sure I'm telling them like let's collab again. Like I feel like this is so good and thank you for all your work and stuff. Like I want to make sure I'm showing the appreciation of like the work that everyone else puts into because that's what makes it happen.
