My family members, including my mom and grandma, have noticed several changes in Abilene over the years. The city has grown bigger, but unfortunately, the crime rate has also increased, with multiple murders occurring each year. My mom mentioned how her freedoms as a child, such as riding a bike or walking to the mall, have been restricted due to safety concerns like kidnapping. Similarly, my grandma mentioned that she could freely go to convenience stores and parks, but now parents are stricter with their children due to crime and kidnappings. In terms of cultural principles and morals, my mom mentioned the growing acceptance and visibility of the LGBTQ+ community, including parades. Meanwhile, my grandma noted that religion is no longer enforced as strongly, with fewer people attending church, and there is a lack of respect for elders among the youth. Overall, Abilene has experienced population growth and changes in cultural values and safety concerns over the years. My name is Heaven Del Rio, and here I'm going to interview my grandma and my mother. I chose to interview them because they grew up here and they have a great idea on how Abilene has changed over the years. The questions that I have is one, how has Abilene changed over the years since you have lived here? Two, what are some freedoms that you've had growing up that I maybe didn't have? Three, what cultural principles slash morals have changed in Abilene since you have lived here? First, we're going to be interviewing my mom. So the first question is, how has Abilene changed over the years since you have lived here? Abilene's gotten bigger since I was little. The crime rate is higher. There used to be maybe one or zero murders a year. Now there's multiple murders a year here. So my mom basically talks about how crime rates have increased in Abilene over the years and how there's multiple murders a year here. I chose to ask this question because I wanted to see how Abilene is in their generation versus my own. I chose to ask this question because I wanted to see how Abilene is in their generation versus my own. I was allowed to walk or ride my bike pretty much wherever I wanted, go to the mall and hang out. Now you have to have a parent with you if you want to hang out at the mall and it's not recommended to walk or ride your bike because of kidnapping. So my mom basically says that her freedoms growing up are being able to freely ride your bike or walk at whatever time of the night that you wanted and now out today it isn't very recommended to do so. So next we will be interviewing my grandma. What freedoms did you have growing up that I didn't have? The freedoms that I had as a child growing up was we were able to walk to the convenience stores that were two blocks away, across the street was a park, we were able to go play there, play in the playground with friends and now it's not that way anymore because of crime and kidnappings and all this stuff, people have gotten strict with their children. So my grandma talks about how she could freely go to a convenience store or a park and play with her friends and how now you really can't do the kidnapping and predators and because of that parents are strict with their children and what they are allowed to do. So my last question is how have the cultural principles and morals changed in Abilene over the years? First we are going to be interviewing my mother. There used to not be LGBTQ plus community that was not talked about and now it's legal and you see more about it, there's parades that are done. So my mom says how one cultural moral has changed in Abilene would be that LGBTQ plus and how they have certain things that are done specifically for them. Next we will be interviewing my grandma. Principles and morals are religion, when I was younger it wasn't an option, it was a must to go to church every Sunday and Wednesdays and crime also is another big thing is crime has grown definitely versus then and respect, you know, there's no respecting elders the way it used to be. A lot of these youth these days they don't have that, they don't respect their elders. So cultural principles slash morals that my grandmother named would be how religion isn't enforced like how it used to be in the days, how people don't attend church on Sundays and how crime has increased and how the youth don't respect elders like how they used to. Due to me asking these questions to my family members like my mother and my grandma, I have noticed changes in Abilene that I have never noticed before. Some changes that they mentioned are population increase, increased crime rates, not being able to do things how they could back then like for example riding a bike or walking late at night to convenience stores. Some cultural principles slash morals have changed in Abilene that they named are how not everybody has the same religion or beliefs, not everybody attends church like how it used to be and how people are more involved in the LGBTQ. Another example is how population has increased and how Abilene's status is now compared to the Fort Worth area. According to credible sources online, the crime rate in Abilene in 2003 was 441.82. The crime rate in Abilene in 2018 was 482.53. The population of Abilene in 2003 was 114,554. The population of Abilene in 2018 was 122,798. Abilene currently resides about 152,302 residents. Another issue in Abilene is the high gas prices. The highest gas got in Abilene in 2000 was $1.44. The price currently in Abilene is sitting around $3.35. Another issue in the United States is high grocery rates. Not only is it in Abilene, but it's all around the world. A loaf of bread now costs $3.48 when it used to cost maybe a little more than a dollar. A gallon of milk currently is $2.18 when it used to be just a little bit over a dollar also. I chose to talk about my hometown because I realize a lot can change over time. A city can grow bigger and the world is simply becoming a more dangerous place to live in. There's inflation and conflicting things all around us. My job is to bring these issues to light. Thank you for listening to this podcast today. You You
