My grandma and mother share their perspectives on how Abilene has changed over the years. Crime rates have increased with multiple murders occurring annually. Historical buildings are being torn down instead of preserved. The diversity and population have also grown. They had more freedom to walk or bike around as children, but now it's not recommended due to safety concerns. Cultural principles and morals have changed, with the LGBTQ+ community being more accepted and visible. Religion is not enforced as strictly, and there is a lack of respect for elders. The population and gas prices have increased, while grocery rates have also gone up. The podcast aims to highlight these changes and issues. My name is Heaven Del Rio, and here I'm going to interview my grandma and my mother. I chose to interview them because they grew up here and they have a great idea on how Abilene has changed over the years. The questions that I have is one, how has Abilene changed over the years since you have lived here? Two, what are some freedoms that you had growing up that I maybe didn't have? Three, what cultural principles slash morals have changed in Abilene since you have lived here? First, we're going to be interviewing my mom. So the first question is, how has Abilene changed over the years since you have lived here? Abilene's gotten bigger since I was little. The crime rate is higher. There used to be maybe one or zero murders a year. Now there's multiple murders a year here. So my mom basically talks about how crime rates have increased in Abilene over the years and how there's multiple murders on a lot of occasions. Next we will be interviewing my grandma and seeing how her perspective of Abilene has changed over the years. For me, Abilene has changed in different ways, certain things. One way is historically, like a lot of the buildings, a lot of historical buildings are being torn down instead of preserved. A lot of buildings that I remember growing up when I was little, 45 years ago, have changed. The diversity here in Abilene, in the city of Abilene, has changed a lot. As far as race, there's a lot of diversity. And population, way, definitely has increased, like it used to be considered a very, like everybody knew each other, now it's, you can compare it to, I would think like to Fort Worth or something like that, it's big, it's grown a lot from what it used to be. So ways that my grandma thinks Abilene has changed would be population, diversity, and how prehistoric buildings are being destroyed instead of preserved. So my next question is, what freedoms did you have growing up that maybe I didn't have? I chose to ask this question because I wanted to see how Abilene is in their generation versus my own. Next we will be interviewing my mother again. So what are some freedoms that you had growing up that I don't have growing up today? Growing up, I was allowed to walk or ride my bike pretty much wherever I wanted, go to the mall and hang out. Now you have to have a parent with you if you want to hang out at the mall, and it's not recommended to walk or ride your bike because of kidnapping. So my mom basically says that her freedoms growing up are being able to freely ride your bike or walk at whatever time of the night that you wanted. And now, how today, it isn't very recommended to do so. So next we will be interviewing my grandma. What freedoms did you have growing up that I didn't have? Freedoms that I had as a child growing up was we were able to walk to the convenience stores that were two blocks away, across the street was a park, we were able to go play there, play in the playground with friends, and now it's not that way anymore because of crime and kidnappings and all this stuff, it doesn't, you know, people have gotten strict with their children. So my grandma talks about how she could freely go to a convenience store or a park and play with her friends, and how now you really can't do the kidnapping and predators, and because of that, parents are strict with their children and what they're allowed to do. So my last question is, how have the cultural principles slash morals changed in Adelaine over the years? First, we're going to be interviewing my mother. There used to not be the LGBTQ plus community, that was not talked about, and now it's legal and you see more about it, there's parades that are done. So my mom says how one cultural moral has changed in Adelaine would be the LGBTQ plus and how they have certain things that are done specifically for them. So we'll be interviewing my grandma. I suppose the morals are religion. When I was younger, it wasn't an option. It was a must to go to church every Sunday and Wednesdays. And crime also is another, another big thing is, crime has grown, definitely. Versus then, and respect, you know, there's no respecting elders the way it used to be. A lot of these youths these days, they don't have that. They don't respect their elders. So cultural principles slash morals that my grandmother named would be how religion isn't enforced like how it used to be in the days, how people don't attend church on Sundays and Wednesdays how they're supposed to, and how crime has increased and how the youth don't respect elders like how they used to. Due to me asking these questions to my family members, like my mother and my grandma, I have noticed changes in Adelaine that I have never noticed before. Some changes that they mentioned are population increase, increased crime rates, not being able to do things how they could back then, like for example, riding a bike or walking late at night to convenience stores. Some cultural principles slash morals have changed in Adelaine that they named are how not everybody has the same religion or beliefs, not everybody attends church like how it used to be, and how people are more involved in the LGBTQ. Another example is how population has increased and how Adelaine's taxes is now compared to the Fort Worth area. According to credible sources online, the crime rate in Adelaine in 2003 was 441.82. The crime rate in Adelaine in 2018 was 482.53. The population of Adelaine in 2003 was 114,554. The population of Adelaine in 2018 was 122,798. Adelaine currently resides about 152,302 residents. Another issue in Adelaine is the high gas prices. The highest gas got in Adelaine in 2000 was $1.44. The price currently in Adelaine is sitting around $3.35. Another issue in the United States is high grocery rates. Not only is it in Adelaine, but it's all around the world. A loaf of bread now costs $3.48 when it used to cost maybe a little more than a dollar. A gallon of milk currently is $2.18 when it used to be just a little bit over a dollar also. I chose to talk about my hometown because I realized a lot can change over time. A city can grow bigger and the world is simply becoming a more dangerous place to live in. There's inflation and conflicting things all around us. My job is to bring these issues to light. Thank you for listening to this podcast today. You
