Hannah is a new neonatal intensive care unit OT who is training and teaching courses in a hospital setting. She is using the ADDIE method to develop her materials for an acute nursing skill validation course. She starts with analysis to identify knowledge gaps and learning needs, then moves on to design by setting objectives and deciding on delivery strategies. In the development phase, all materials are finalized. The implementation phase involves educating nurses in small groups over five weeks. The evaluation phase includes receiving feedback on the effectiveness of delivery methods. Hannah is excited to see the outcome. Good afternoon. My name is Hannah, and I am a fairly new neonatal intensive care unit OT who has found herself in the midst of training, leading, and teaching about 18 months into this position. After learning about the various instructional design models, I found the ADDIE to be one of the more applicable models to the courses I am teaching in a hospital setting. To start off, I am currently preparing to teach an acute nursing skill validation course. In this type of course, every nurse on the unit is required to pass an assessment of job-related tasks in order to maintain a magnet hospital status. As an OT, it is my role to host the feeding and neurodevelopmental portion of the skill validation. When looking at the ADDIE method, I found that I have taken a similar approach in developing my materials for this course. Beginning with analysis, myself, being the educator, has determined what knowledge gap is present with regards to feeding, where learning need is, and what base knowledge does my audience have so that I can fill this gap with the information that I am providing. Next, moving on to design. This is where I am developing learning objectives, deciding what informational strategies will be used in delivering this material, whether that be a PowerPoint handout, how interactive is my course going to be. Once all of these are decided, then you would get into the development portion of the ADDIE method. This is when all materials that will be delivered and utilized during the learning process are finalized. Ultimately, the end goal of these materials is to be utilized to implement them, and that is where the implementation process begins. The course content is complete, and it is time to educate these nurses over a course of about five weeks in their small groups that they have been divided into. Upon completion, every nurse will receive an evaluation paper, which is the last portion of the ADDIE method evaluation, and I will get feedback on how effective my delivery methods were and how it altered their understanding of my topics. I am excited to see how this pans out and what kind of feedback I receive. Stay tuned.
