The Valdivia earthquake, which occurred in 1960 off the coast of Chile, caused a massive tsunami that devastated Hilo, Hawaii. The tsunami waves reached as far as Japan and the Philippines, resulting in thousands of deaths and injuries. The Valdivia earthquake occurred on May 22, 1960, approximately 160 km, 100 miles off the coast of Chile. Parallel to the city of Valdivia, it lasted approximately 10 minutes and triggered a massive tsunami with waves up to 35 m, 82 feet. The main tsunami raced across the Pacific Ocean and devastated Hilo, Hawaii. Waves as high as 10.7 m, 35 feet, were recorded even 10,000 km, 6,200 miles from the epicenter.
