Jesus appears to his disciples after his resurrection, proving he is not a ghost by showing them his hands and feet. He eats with them to further demonstrate his physical presence. Jesus then explains that everything written about him in the scriptures must be fulfilled, including his suffering and resurrection. He commissions his disciples to preach repentance and forgiveness of sins to all nations. Jesus promises to send them the power of the Holy Spirit before he ascends to heaven. This story teaches us that Jesus can meet us in our pain and confusion and bring renewal to our lives. In personal worship, we can talk to Jesus about our struggles and obstacles, knowing that he is both our friend and Savior. Welcome to Christ Church's Daily Devotion for January 12, 2024. Today, we will be reading from Luke chapter 24, verses 36 through 50. While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, Peace be with you. They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. He said to them, Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet. It is I, myself. Touch me and see. A ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. And while they did not believe it, because of joy and amazement, he asked them, Do you have anything here to eat? They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it in their presence. He said to them, This is what I told you while I was still with you. Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms. Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, This is what is written. The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day. And repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised. But stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high. The death of Jesus must have seemed like a flood of despair for his disciples. It was devastating, and people do all sorts of things in grief. Disciples went fishing, hung out together, scattered throughout the area. And how do you make sense of the world as you know it, falling apart? But then Jesus received new life and gave them new life. When the disciples recognized Jesus, they were filled with wonder and joy and couldn't wait to share the good news. This story reminds us that no matter where we try to go in our pain, confusion, and grief, the living Jesus is able to come to us. Once we receive him, life is renewed. Today's Personal Worship Option Talk to Jesus about any struggle or obstacle you face. He will listen both as a friend and a Savior.
