Hello, good morning, and welcome to the It Ends With Us podcast, discussing all the important, intense, and nitty-gritty topics and details revolving around the New York Times bestselling book It Ends With Us by author Colleen Hoover. Today's episode is titled Breaking the Cycle, focusing on Lily Bloom's struggle to leave her relationship with her abusive husband, Ryle Kincaid, and foster a healthy relationship with her first love, Atlas Corrigan. Trigger warning topics of abuse will be discussed. Let's break this down step-by-step, first focusing on Lily Bloom. In It Ends With Us, Lily Bloom is a recent college graduate, born and raised in Plethora, Maine. While in Maine, she meets the handsome and unassuming Atlas Corrigan. Atlas, a homeless teen, was living in an abandoned house in close proximity to Lily. Noticing he was struggling, Lily gave him food, water, and even a few of her dad's shirts and clothing. Lily and Atlas grew closer, with Lily confiding in Atlas. Her dad was abusing her and her mother, and she found protection in Atlas being there for her. Eventually, Atlas moves to Boston to live with a family member, leaving Lily devastated and distraught that her first love up and left her. However, Atlas returns for her 16th birthday, and to let her know that he will be back for her when his life is good enough and stable enough to provide for her. Atlas articulating his need to be away from her so he can build a life to support her is one of the marks of going above and beyond for someone you love. He treats her with respect, kindness, and compassion. However, Atlas never came back for her, and she was forced to move on. Fast forward a few years, after her abusive father's death, Lily sits on the roof of a building in Boston, contemplating life, while thinking back on the awful memories she had with her father. Ryle Kincaid, a gorgeous, hot-headed neurosurgeon, sits on the roof with her. They talk about their naked truths, and both Lily and Ryle get incredibly vulnerable in the process. Flirting begins to happen, and Ryle only wants to get physical with Lily. He doesn't want a relationship with her, and because of this, she shuts down anything happening between them. As time goes on, however, Ryle starts to fall for Lily and wants to develop a relationship with her. They both begin to develop strong feelings, which turns into a relationship between the two. This is where the topic of abuse arises, so viewer discretion is advised. During a dinner between Ryle and Lily, Ryle burns his hand on the casserole he was baking. As Lily laughs at the situation, Ryle gets upset and pushes her, causing her to bleed. Ryle starts apologizing profusely and begins to beg Lily for her forgiveness. In this moment, she does forgive him, but makes the statement that if it ever happens again, she will leave him. She worries that she will end up like her mother, who stayed with her father despite suffering his abuse daily. While on a date, Lily and Ryle are greeted by the chef, who happens to be Atlas. Atlas can see markings and bruises on both Lily and Ryle, indicating to him there may have been an altercation within the relationship. Atlas gets Lily alone and tells her she should leave Ryle because of the abuse. Lily disagrees with Atlas and continues to stick out their relationship with Ryle. Not too long after this interaction, Lily and Ryle get married. Ryle has his suspicions about Atlas and Lily together, but Lily assures him there is nothing going on until Ryle finds out that Lily has Atlas's number. Angry, Ryle pushes Lily down the stairs and she suffers awful injuries to her body. Trigger warning, rape will be mentioned. There was another instance where Ryle tried to rape Lily after reading her journal from high school, which talks a lot about her relationship with Atlas. After this incident, Lily finds out she's pregnant with Ryle's daughter. Shocked, she decides to keep the baby and her relationship with Ryle platonic. In the last few scenes of the book, Lily decides to divorce Ryle so her baby never has to endure what she and her mother endured with Lily's father, who resembles Ryle in many ways. In this way, Lily is able to break the cycle of abuse her and her mother endured and start fresh with her baby. We are going to end on a happy note there, so thank you for listening to the It Ends With Us podcast. Have a great day.
