So this person has actually been in the Judy Beans before, before the old Covid or what's that in between, whenever that happens, but now I've welcomed him back as an official guest to Judy Beans. This person is tall, handsome, ginger. The name of this podcast is All the Best Things in Life are Ginger. And without further ado, I want to introduce you to Paul Tewksbury. How are you Paul? I am fantastic. This is so lovely in here. It's so cosy and warm. It's just like stepping out of somewhere else instead of jail. It's like if you walk into a closet and it's like it's somewhere else. And so just for people who don't know you Paul, what's your name, what you do and where do you come from? So my name is Paul Tewy. I am currently a business development executive with Outlook. And I am from across the road. Yay! Up the Northside! Up the Northside, but I'm from Tallaght. I'm from up the Northside if that's ok. And so myself and Paul have been friends for a long time, but one of the main reasons that we are friends and that we love to talk about a certain subject is Scotch. Oh, is that your phone? No, it's the earphone. Oh no! I'm just going to try and find my phone. So yes, myself and Paul realised through the course of our friendship that we are absolute Scotch lovers. We're also probably two of the most Irish looking people in the world and Irish looking sounding people in the world. However, Scotch is a massive, massive love of ours. So we are going to go through a little taster. We've already had a Glenmorangie cocktail that was just made to be ginger cordial and soda and Glenmorangie. It was delish. We then had a little precursor of Tallister 10. That is actually one of my favourite whiskeys I have to say. I do love an old Tallister 10. And Paul is unzipping his leash in the back. I can hear him. Ok, so I said I'm going to come over. We're going to be responsible. It's all about responsible drinking. So if we're going to drink Scotch, we will have a little taste. So I've just brought some over. Oh, the iron brew! Ok, so I love all things orange and we will have a little iron brew there between us. And that's why I laugh when I think of the Glenmorangie bottle. I'm like that is a ginger bottle. I was just like the old bottle is ginger. Holy hell. Do you know what? This is the first time in real life I've ever held a bottle of iron brew. No! I'm not going to tell a lie. I'm not going to tell you that I've ever had iron brew before. Ok, that's fair. I'm very, but I'm really excited. I'm also very excited if you've got that ASMR. We have some snacks that Paul brought. We've got some scampi fries and some dry roasted peanuts. I was so disappointed in myself because I had them laid out and I said ok, let's go. And Jan actually dropped me over because she's so wonderful. And she's collecting me as well, so I have to say she's so wonderful. She is. She is wonderful. And we stopped off and I said stop off at Shae's. Shae's a lovely shop around the corner. And I said I'm going to go in to grab some iron brew. And then I realised I've got the bacon fries. The bacon fries. Oh my bacon fries. Oh, Raph would be so disappointed in me. That's Raph's agapito. Jenny, so are we going to have... Oh, well we can have that on the side. Ok, so we're going to start off with, I've got a little Glenmorangie. It's Kinterooban, so this is a 14-year-old Glenmorangie. It's finished in Portcastle, so it's lovely and toasty and sweet. And as well, just because we're drinking and I've seen as well, I have to give you a nice little lovely glass. Oh, would you be able to stop with this little lid? With his little hat. I did put the lid here. I was like, what's this from? He gave it to me. Thank you so much, Paul. This is great. So I suppose, as we pour our... I don't know if you can get that noise in there, but I'm just swishing it around. As we drink our beautiful scotch. So just about you, because we obviously know you from many glorious hats. From Hennessy, from being Paul our friend and Paul the singer. What is Paul industry? So like, you know, I don't think many of us, I mean obviously, no offense to you, have everything. You kind of work behind the bar in a bar event. Yeah, yeah. Because that was obviously before a lot of us met you. So kind of, what is your, if you have any, bartending background? So I grew up around drink. I've been surrounded by drink. My very first job. Of course, it's a part of the business. My very first job. And I love telling people this because I still have an association to this. I was talking about it in work last week. My very first job. Cheers to you. Cheers, Paul. Cheers, thank you. What a treat, sir. You have to have a quick sip before you start. Oh my god, it's beautiful. So my very first job. Oh my god. I'll go on with it. Yes. So my very first job was, I was working, I worked at 12 years age. I went working with my dad. And my dad made Southern Comfort. Southern Comfort to me, at the time, was owned by Brown Foreman. And I love the fact that, you know, dad, he got me in for the summers. And they used to open and decant all the bottles and all the liquid. If the labels were wrong, you'd have to decant it in and ship it back. And we'd pump it back in and get it done. But, like, I grew up around it. And I knew all about dad and Brown Foreman when I was growing up. And it's kind of a lovely synergy that I'm back working with. We're dealing through Brown Foreman and it's still involved. I'm getting addicted to this reading. Oh, it's fantastic. It's a sad role, a sad labourer. I mean, that's what it is. I started working when I was about 18. I actually started working up the road in the college fair, up in D.C.U. for a couple of years, which was fantastic fun. Because we were just trying out drinks. It was great practice later on. I didn't have to go to college or do any studying. But after a while, I went to work for Uncle Louie. So I worked with Louie Fitzgerald for nine, ten years, maybe. Wow. Yeah, so, across. You learn your trade then, don't you, though? I tell you, Louie's still, to this day, tip of the cap. You know, he's the first person I told when I was leaving. He was always really, really good to me. And he was the first person I told when I was leaving the group to move to Edward Dylan. Wow. Which kept me in the job for years. So, yeah, I worked in... I'm sorry to cut across, just maybe for a bit of, like, for people who don't know who that person is. Like, if you could just give, like, a three-second synopsis of who he is and what he does in Ireland, for Ireland, I suppose, in Ireland. So, Louie Fitzgerald used to be probably Ireland's biggest public and most famous. He has a couple of very, very, very fantastic bars. Kiel's, Dag's Head, Gin Palace, Grand Central, where I spent most of my term, and then a lot of suburban pubs as well. I didn't know you were in the Grand Central. Yeah, yeah, that's where I spent most of my time. I love Gin Palace, one of my favourite bars in the world. Gin Palace is great. It is great. Yeah, it's great. No, Tallahead's actually used to work there. It was, Derek used to work there. Yeah! Come on, Derek, we love you! Yeah, Derek actually lives around the corner now, yeah! Go away! Well, yeah, no, so I spent it working for Louie. I actually went back to college halfway through, so I kind of got to the stage one day where just something happened to me in work and I decided, OK, I need to look at something else. And I've no problem talking to people or telling people this one day. It just hit me one day when I was at work. There was a woman who came up to the bar, and I always used to try and stick a positive side in everything. Hey, how are you? How are you? How's your day? She's good. Can I have a glass of yam long? I said, yeah, yeah, sure, of course you can. How's your day? Same thing again. Second time. Can I have a glass of yam long? I was like, how are you? And I don't know what it was. It may be years of me putting stuff away or burying stuff. It just hit me and I was like, oh, OK, I need to look at myself. So they were really good. And the group looked after me and said, OK, you can switch over. I was working full time. I went back to college. I did a marketing degree in... Marketing? Marketing. Wow! In DIT up on Anger Street. But I was still working pretty much full time. While in college? While in college. Oh, man. Nice in college. Yes, a long, old slog. It was literally some days finishing in college, nine, finishing, four, after work for five. And you'd finish, get on with one, do the exact same thing again the next day. But it was... Yeah, it was lucky. It's what I wanted to do and it got me where I wanted to go. So back in... I started with Edward Dillon back in 2016. The Moet Hennessy, worked on Moet Hennessy for us. And just to interject, I think the whole of Ireland can... I would sincerely like to apologise to the Moet family because my whole life's like, do you want a Moet? Is that a Moet? Is it a big Moet or is it a wee Moet? A wee Moet. Oh, I bet you'd give it to them for me. But, yeah, I only actually... When we went down to... I'm obviously hanging out with you, Moet today up here. That's how we say it, Moet Hennessy. And, like, great brands. Fuck... Sorry. You keep recursing. Fbomb came out half... Apologies. Really, really great brands though. Really great. Like, super great brands to kind of work with coming from that angle, I suppose. Unbelievably lucky in the brands they had. Glenmorangie, Belvedere. I love the Belvedere peeps I was with. Hennessy, I spent most of my time on, which was fantastic. And Downing Cork. And Art Dey, which... Art? I'm not going to say I have any favourites. Oh, I think. But, like, I mean, that's the thing. You work on the brands, and I suppose we might touch on this in a while. And the brands are great because you're lucky enough. But the brands aren't anything without the people around them. And, you know, I was probably blessed and lucky to have been surrounded by so many sound people who kind of made it easier. And, you know, sometimes your journey isn't fantastic and it builds up and you just ask questions. I think with those brands specifically in Ireland, like, sure, that could be difficult. There's a lot to know. And the reason, I suppose, you know, why are we not doing whisky? Why are we not doing Moët? Why are we not doing these things? And Irish whisky is because me and you just really love Scotch. Yeah. And I think you personally, like, from what I know of you when I talk to you, like, if you believe in something, like, that's what you're doing. Like, you believe in it. Like, you personally believe in it. And you like it. And I think, you know, if you were to say to, I don't know, there won't be many people who, you know, like, obviously, there are great people in different positions now in Moët and Hennessey. But, you know, you made it such a relatable brand, especially to Irish people because, you know, I know Hennessey goes back to Cork and things like that. But, I mean, you know, coming from my perspective, all I knew of Hennessey was that it's in a mom and dad's press, like, you know, that's where it landed. And then I met you. And then with Brent Foreman, once you kind of enter into their world, and I've been working with Brent Foreman, like, since I was a baby bartender on Cabinet Piece. Thank you so much. Thank you for everything you've done for me in my life. But, honestly, like, you know, opened my mind to these different kind of, like, products and people. But you specifically, Paul, like, you've done so much to create such a buzz about that brand. And you made it so relatable to the bartenders of Ireland where before it was, you know, to the bartenders of Ireland where before, I'm saying about it, before, that wasn't as amazing as I feel that you have made it and as a protocol. Like, it's cool now. Do you know what I mean? Like, I love making Hennessey cocktails and I love the brand. Yeah. Oh, I'd like that. Yes. You'd like to eat it right on the page, my friend. No, I appreciate that, and I do. But, you know, everything that comes from, you learn from something else. And, you know, you learn from everybody around you and absorb and absorb and absorb everything around you and absorb everything that is. Like, I used to suffer massively when I started from anxiety and looking around the place and looking at everybody. And I used to look at what other people are doing. Like, that Kev Worley bloke just handing people little bottles and shaking their hands of like, he's really good. Everybody knows him. I'm like, like I'm working with Kavanagh.
