The Northwestern men's basketball team won their season opener. Evanston residents are unhappy about a proposed property tax hike. The Salina Hotel in Chicago will become a homeless shelter. President Joe Biden will meet with the United Auto Workers Union. Taylor Swift is touring in Argentina. Three giant pandas were sent back to China after being in the U.S. for over 50 years. Good morning, you're listening to the Daily Cat, your morning news brief from WNUR News. I'm your host, Gabriela Egozi. It's 9 a.m. Central Time on Thursday, November 9, 2023. Here are the headlines to start your day. The Northwestern men's basketball team won its season opener on Monday night versus Binghamton. The team pulled off the win with a 72-61 victory, marking Northwestern's 15th season opener win in the past 16 seasons. Boo Booby had 27 points, and Brooks Barnheiser had a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. At one point in the game, Northwestern trailed by as many as 11 points, but eventually came back in the end and took an impressive win. Up next, the Cats will face Dayton on Friday in another electric home matchup. Evanston residents are expressing concern and dissatisfaction against the possible $4.4 million property tax hike expected in 2024. This proposal would lead to around an 8% increase in property taxes. Evanston residents have stated that the city has had issues with spending too much, rather than an issue bringing in enough money. Residents are now urging officials to get organized in order to prevent them from having to pay increased taxes. The Salina Hotel is turning into a homeless shelter for around seven months starting in December after the city of Chicago was given a grant from the Illinois Department of Human Services. All 116 rooms will be used, and the hotel will be temporarily closed to guests beginning on Friday, which is expected to result in many workers being let off from their jobs. Today, President Joe Biden will head to Belvedere, Illinois, to meet with the leader of the United Auto Workers Union. Biden plans to address the United Auto Workers members, as well as its leaders, with hopes that this event will allow for the United Auto Workers leaders to display certain agreements that put an end to the ongoing union strike. Taylor Swift's Eros tour is headed overseas, as she touched down in Argentina for her first performance in Buenos Aires on Thursday. Plans revealed by a source close to Travis Kelsey have said that he plans to be there supporting Taylor during the bi-week. This week, the roles will be reversed, as Kelsey will now be cheering on Taylor Swift from the sidelines. After more than 50 years of the Chinese pandas being at the U.S. National Zoo, three giant pandas were sent back to China yesterday. China gave the U.S. a giant panda in 1972, after Richard Nixon helped bring back the diplomatic relations between China and the U.S. Today, all pandas that have been given to the U.S. have been returned, and the last pandas, which are currently at the Atlanta Zoo, will be returning to China in the beginning of 2024.
