Melanie Klein, a psychoanalyst, studied the relationship between mother and child. She emphasized that this affective relationship is the first one for a newborn and is communicated non-verbally. Klein discovered that infants express themselves through play and use it to control and express their anxieties. She made two contributions to psychoanalysis: the concept of fantasy as a way for children to process emotions and the idea of envy in the early relationship between a child and their mother. Fantasy allows children to express their desires, fears, and anxieties. Envy arises when a child perceives favoritism towards a sibling, leading to a desire for what the other has. Ella sostuvo que los niños utilizan la fantasía para procesar y comprender sus emociones, también que la fantasía es la herramienta que les permite a los niños expresar sus deseos, miedos y ansiedades. Como segundo aporte está la envidia, se refiere a la relación temprana entre el hijo y su madre, y se refleja cuando éste puede percibir envidia al sentir que la madre favorece a un hermano o hermana, lo que le provoca deseo de tener entre comillas lo que el otro tiene.
