Summary: Emilia discusses waste disposal, including solid waste, sewage waste, and electronic waste. She explains the consequences of improper waste disposal, such as landfill gases, forest fires, rising sea levels, and contaminated water. Emilia suggests solutions, such as recycling, reusing objects, and cleaning up local areas. She emphasizes the importance of taking action to save the planet and encourages listeners to start making a change now. ------ Hello everybody! I'm Emilia, welcome to the Eco-podcast about the problems on our planet! Today I'm going to talk about waste disposal, more specifically about what is waste disposal and what are the consequences of it and some solutions about it. Hope you guys are seated comfortably and ready to listen and learn some new facts that you might have not known. Enjoy! What is waste disposal? Waste disposal is the collection, processing and recycling or deposition of the waste materials of humans. The term waste is usually applied to solid waste, sewage and electronic waste. - The solid waste is every material or food that we throw out or, in other words, are garbage. - Sewage waste is, in other words, water disposal, that's the process of the water going into the sewage and then it undergoes water treatment and comes back to us again in the form of clean water. - Electronic waste is all electronic devices that are no longer of use to us. It includes both white goods and brown goods: The white goods are refrigerators, ovens, washing machines, etc. The brown goods are gadgets such as televisions, radios, computers and more. The electronic waste or the so-called e-waste is highly toxic for the environment because of the lead and cadmium that the cellular phones and the computers have. They also contain non-recyclable parts that are really hazardous to our planet Earth. What are the consequences of waste disposal? When we throw away our garbage, we must think more about what it does to the environment of our planet. We have to ask ourselves, where does all this rubbish go and what happens with it? Well, the rubbish goes into the rubbish dump! However, ordinary waste that cannot be recycled, salvaged or donated goes to the landfill where it is compacted by machines that make it as small as possible. After it is compacted, it gets covered with dirt and then the anaerobic process begins. The anaerobic process is a procedure in which organic matter in wastewater, wastewater treatment sludge or other material is degraded by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen. This results in the formation of the landfill gases. A lot of the trash gets thrown away not into the specialized places but into the land around us. However, when we throw plastic, for example, it can get disposed quickly in the earth and this results in the ground getting hotter and hotter when the sun is shining. That, on the other hand, results into a lot of forest fires which also emit a lot of carbon dioxide and this results in the sea levels rising. It's all like a big chain. One thing leads to another. The garbage sometimes gets into the water pool from which people get clean water. If trash gets into the water, then some substances from the rubbish will be left in the water making it dirty and non-drinkable for us humans. If we drink dirty water, that will lead to a lot of infections and diseases. Solutions: Of course, we shouldn't get too sad because of this. Instead, we must be motivated to help our planet. - One solution about this problem is the recycling. Recycling is referring to the process of converting waste into reusable materials. With recycling, we are able to help the environment at least a bit since nowadays most of the materials that we use can be converted and then reused again. If we all start recycling, we would have a chance of saving our dear earth. - Using objects more than once would also help a lot. If we use metal water bottles that can be washed and used again instead of buying a new plastic one every week, then we would lessen the garbage that's being thrown away into the dump. The pollution that factories make from the process of the plastic water bottles being made will decrease drastically, too. - If we go to clean the parks near our houses or just any area in our town, it will help the environment and help reduce the gases that are being produced by the garbage and reduce the temperatures in the earth. It will also make our green areas actually look decent and people could enjoy a clean park instead of a dirty one filled with thousands of cigarettes and energy drink cans or plastic bottles. The world is in desperate need of help from us humans. If we don't acknowledge the problems our planet has and don't take any actions to them, we might lose what we have known once. The earth is in great danger and the only ones that can save it are us humans. Hope isn't lost, but we need to start acting now. The story of saving the world starts now with us! Thank you all for listening. I hope you enjoyed and learned something and are motivated to start a mission for making a change for the better for our planet.
