Aging is not just about the number of years we've lived, but about the conditions our body is exposed to over time. Nutrition plays a role in healing and repairing our body, which can slow down aging and increase life expectancy. Oxidation, similar to rusting, occurs in our bodies and causes aging and damage. Antioxidants, found in fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices, can help prevent this rusting process. Adding flavorful and colorful foods to our diet can support healing and repair. Elle invites listeners to join her online course on Empowered Nutrition for more information. Hello, this is Elle's Food for Thought and I'm Elle coming today to share a little bit about aging. Now, as we get older, our body changes, that's a given, but for some reason, some people still look 40 when they're 60 and for some reason, some people that look, you know, maybe a little bit older than their age aren't actually really that age. Now this is something I saw a lot when I used to live in a country called Nepal and I lived in a very rural village and many of the women there, they cooked on open fires frequently and they had much more challenging lives and they often look 20 years the age that I thought they might be. Now, this just shows that aging is not about the amount of years we have been on this planet but aging is about what conditions is the body exposed to over time and there's some absolutely fascinating things we can do with nutrition to ensure that we're supporting our body to have the best of healing and repairing because when our body can heal well and when our body can repair well, then we see lower instances and lower signs of aging across time. Now, that's great for the aesthetics because many people want to have that youthful, fresh look about them. However, for me, what's so interesting is that when we slow aging in our body, it means that we slow the degeneration or slow the damage on our organs, which means that we increase our life expectancy. So, slowing aging can be good for our looks but it's, for me, so much more important about our long-term physical wellness. Now, if you've ever taken an apple and cut it in half and let it be as it is, you probably have noticed that it will have turned brown. This brown is a form of rust and it happens because oxygen in the air reacts with the sugars in the apple. This is called oxidation. It's a form of rust and this exact type of rust is exactly what happens in the body and causes us to age and have damage and then the body has to heal and repair and over time that damage accumulates. Now, if you want to stop the apple going brown, you put lemon juice on it because lemon juice is what we call a powerful antioxidant. So, what we find is that the more fruits and vegetables and herbs and spices a person eats, the more that their body has the ability to stop the rust from happening. Just like the apple, you put the lemon juice on it and it doesn't go brown anymore. So, here's one little top trick just to add in to your day to heal and repair even more. It's how flavourful could your food be and how colourful could your food be because when it's flavourful and colourful, you have herbs and spices and vibrant fruits and vegetables delighting your senses and delighting your body too.
