Hello, and welcome to my podcast. Bum, bum, test, test, test, test. Okay. Welcome to my podcast. Um, this is my first episode, so let me know how to approach... Um... Hello, and welcome to the first episode of my podcast. Um, today by request we will be covering domestic violence in Australia. This is my first episode, and I'm very excited to be meeting you guys, so thank you so much. And, without further ado, let's just get straight into it. Um, and, who's the subscriber? Um, anyway, thank you so much for watching. Um... 20% of Australian adults have experienced domestic violence. Is that more or less than you thought? I mean, personally, that's way more than I thought. I thought it was like 5%, 5% or under. Um, often referred to as a silent epidemic, domestic violence is an issue that has plagued Australia since the beginning. So, if anything was violent, like, there's a bunch of modern-day activist groups like Force of Australia and White Ribbon. They all do amazing work to help survivors and victims of domestic abuse. Often referred to as a silent epidemic, uh, domestic violence in Australia has been plaguing it since, like, three or four decades. Often referred to as a silent epidemic, domestic violence in Australia is an issue that has been plaguing it since the beginning. Since colonisation. It is, though, anything but silent. Modern-day activist groups such as Force of Australia and White Ribbon have been vocal and active supporters for victims of abuse. And the government has many prevention plans in place, one including them funding a range of family, domestic and sexual violence initiatives that support victims and survivors. So why is it still such a big issue, defining an epidemic? Is it really that hard to help victims of domestic abuse and address, maybe, broken legal... And address broken legal... Framework. And address broken legal framework? Today's episode will be asking that... Today's... Today's episode... Today's episode will be addressing that question, and we'll be briefly talking... Today's... And 7% or 1.4 million have experienced violence from another family member. And of 5 men or women, only 3 seek support or help, 2 didn't at all. And of 5 men or women, 2 don't seek the support or advice on their situation. This kind of information is pretty shocking. Usually, these kind of issues, unless they're directly affected by them, we don't even really think about them. And that's the problem with these things. They kind of go under the radar until anyone really cares about them. And that's the kind of issue with these problems. They go pretty much unnoticed until someone is directly affected by them or a case goes really public and it is suddenly in the current news. One recent close case in Canberra is just one example of murders in domestic violence, especially within minority groups. On October 23rd, police were called to an address in Bruce in the ACT, following reports of a woman with stab wounds, Tai Tong Khoo. A woman by the name of Tai Tu was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was found injured and taken to the hospital, later charged with murder. This case is relatively underground and this case is relatively unreported on and pretty closed, so we only know basic details so far, but we do know what he was charged with. But specifics on the dynamic of the relationship have not been released, but from the statistics we've discussed before, we can draw a general conclusion of how that came to be. In Canberra, there were 3,209 total family violence offences recorded by police since 2023. In Canberra, there were 8 domestic violence incidents reported per day. Taking into account, meaning there were 8 domestic violence incidents per day, meaning on record there were 8 domestic violence incidents per day in Canberra. Meaning, there were 8 domestic violence incidents in Australia. Meaning, there were 8 recorded domestic violence incidents per day, and those were only the ones that were on record. Taking into account the amount of unreported incidents, taking into account the likelihood of unreported incidents that are likely due to people not wanting to get help, due to people not thinking they need help or people thinking they deserve such treatment, people thinking that they can't get help, that their legal system will fail them, like usual. I can't be saying that, holy fuck. That their legal system may fail them like they have others. Taking into account the amount of people that think their legal system is broken, the amount of people that think they deserve the treatment they need, and the amount of people who think they are abused and they change. This statistic is likely, the statistic of how many people were abused per day in Canberra is likely much higher.
