My name is Dwayne and welcome to Directional Bible Ministries. This is a teaching ministry that is called to rightly divide the Word of God for the people of God. Today is February the 13th and this will be our first session on the book of Ephesians. So we've been studying that all week together. If you go to dwaynespearman.org, you can actually find all that I have available. You can see each day this week, I tried as I could to do a study each day. And of course, in these studies, I have my notes with all my references. And then what we're wanting to do or what I'm going to start doing today, just like I did with the book of Acts, where all of the audio recordings are displayed, you can also follow it. You can see each of the sessions. So we're going to do the same thing for Ephesians. So this will be the first one in Ephesians. And you see, these are the 10, 15 minute studies that I've done this past week. And then today, we're just going to review all of this into session one. So, all right, then what we're going to do today is we're going to start our study in the book of Ephesians. Session number one, chapter one, verse number one. So we're going to go ahead and open up our Bibles. And this is being live fed to Rumble. And then after I finish that, I'll upload it to the other platform. So Ephesians chapter one, verse number one, this is the introduction to the book. And we got verses one through nine this past week. So that's what we'll do this morning as well. So there is a live chat feature on Rumble. If you want to chime in there, you're certainly welcome to do so. So let's go ahead and start our study in the book of Ephesians chapter one, verse number one. Paul an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God to the saints, which are Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus. Second Timothy was Paul's last personal epistle. And Ephesians was Paul's last doctrinal epistle. And I believe that he wrote them both at the same time while he was imprisoned in Rome, his last imprisonment awaiting his execution. And there's a couple of hints in scripture that tell us this. In first Timothy one, three, as I sought thee to abide still at Ephesus when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine. So we know that Paul is in Rome. He's writing a letter to Timothy who is already in Ephesus. In Ephesians 6, 21, but that ye also may know my affairs and how I do, Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord shall make known to you all things whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that ye might know our affairs and that he might comfort your heart. So Tychicus, it appears to be the courier that's taking this letter from Rome to Timothy in Ephesus. In 2 Timothy 4, 12, and Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus. So I believe that Tychicus had both the letter that we know of as 2 Timothy and he had the Ephesian letter in his hands. Another possible proof of this is that Paul gives his salutations. Let me get over there. I haven't displayed my notes to you. Another possible proof is that Paul gives his salutations at the end of 2 Timothy and not at the end of Ephesus. Why would he not attach those salutations to both? Because it would have been redundant. They were going together to be read by the same group. In 2 Timothy 4, 19, he says, Salute Prisca and Aquila and the household of Onesiphorus. But if you look at the end of Ephesians in chapter number 6, verse 21, there are no salutations. Again, it would have been redundant for him to put salutations at the end of both of those letters. And then notice Onesiphorus in 2 Timothy 4, 19, Salute Prisca and Aquila and the house of Onesiphorus. Where was Onesiphorus? Well, according to 2 Timothy 1, 16, And the Lord give mercy unto the household of Onesiphorus, for he oft refreshed me and was not ashamed of my shame. But when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and he found me. The Lord granted him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day. And in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well. So Onesiphorus was in Ephesus at this time. And that's why Paul said to salute Onesiphorus, because he was already in Ephesus by this time. Also, in Acts 18, verse number 24, And a certain Jew named Apollos, born of Alexandria, had Alexander, an eloquent man, and minding the scriptures, came to Ephesus. This man was instructed in the way of the Lord, and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue, who when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took unto him and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly. So we also know that Aquila and Priscilla were also at Ephesus. So everything points, the bottom line is that there is a lot of evidence that Ephesus, or Ephesians and 2 Timothy were written at the same time, and they were delivered by Tychicus. Now that means that Ephesians was written while Paul was awaiting execution. Again, that's why I say that 2 Timothy was his last personal letter, and Ephesians was his last doctrinal letter. In Ephesians chapter number 1, For this calls I, Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles. Again, he's indicating there that he is sitting in Rome in imprisonment, I believe the second imprisonment, some will say third, but either way it was his final imprisonment. Ephesians 4.1, I therefore the prisoner of the Lord beseech you that you want worthy vocation that you were called a prisoner, see, of the Lord. So again, he's showing that he is in jail. In 2 Timothy 4, 6, and 8, he says, For I am now ready to be offered, and my time of departure is at hand. So Paul knew that his time had almost come. I fought the good fight. I finished my course, and I've kept the faith. So to me, that builds a very strong case that Paul wrote both Ephesians and 2 Timothy in Rome in prison, and he sent the letter knowing that Timothy was in Ephesus. He was with Onesiphorus and Aquila and Priscilla, and he sends it at the hands of Decachus, who takes this letter. So that's a little bit about the writing of this book of Ephesians. Now notice he says, Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God to the saints which are at Ephesus and the faithful in Christ Jesus. So the first thing that stands out to me is the audience. As with any letter, we have to determine who is the audience? Who is he speaking to? Who is he addressing? Now, grammar dictates that. I know there's people that disagree with me. As a matter of fact, from what I found, most disagree with me. Some agree with me, but the grammar to me dictates that he is addressing two groups of people. I mean, he says there, to the saints, which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus. So who is he? I mean, it looks like he's talking to two different people groups. So he's talking to the saints that are in Ephesus, and he's talking to the faithful in Christ Jesus. That would indicate, or at least hint at that, that these two people groups are different. And we'll discover that as we keep going. Notice he says, Grace be to you and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. So here we see grace and peace. These are referred to many times as the Siamese twins of the New Testament. They're found together. No grace without peace and no peace without grace. You can't know grace until you know peace, and you can't know peace until you know grace. These Siamese twins are found a lot in the New Testament. And to me, it also makes it very clear, the fact that he's using the language of grace. To me, that makes it clear that whoever he's addressing, he's addressing those under a new dispensation. They are no longer under the dispensation of the law. That means that he is addressing believers. He is addressing grace believers. He's not addressing kingdom Jews. He's addressing grace Jews. And understand the mystery that was delivered to Paul was that there was going to be one body, one new creation in Christ made up of both Jew and Gentile, the body of Christ as we call it today. So he's addressing these grace believers. And then notice he says in verse number three, blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ. So this is where I start to focus on pronouns. And again, I use this method when going through the book of Acts and the book of Galatians, and now we're maintaining that consistency. And to be honest, I'll continue to do so until it falls apart because it has to stay consistent. When he says blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now, at first glance, it would appear that the hour is referring to both the groups that he mentioned in verse number one, saints and faithful in Jesus Christ. However, we're going to find that he's going to keep these pronouns until we get down to verse number 13. He's going to keep, you know, he's going to be talking about we and us and us, you know, all the way down. And then he's going to get into verse number 13, and then he's going to go in whom ye also trusted. He's going to do a switch there. And to me, I think that's significant because from that point forward, he's going to use the ye your moving forward. Now, Randy White, who is someone I'd have to say that I agree with, and I'll say he agrees with me because I study him. Randy White points out that the us and the we is used nine times in verses three through 12, and only three times in verses 13 through 23. So that means when we see that us and we in verses 13 through 23, even though he's transitioned from ye your, we need to be mindful that he is most likely going back and referring to the saints, which means, again, you're going to end up with a different definition for the saints as compared to the faithful in Jesus Christ. And then also, if you look at the ye yours, it is used 11 times beginning in verse number 13 through 23, and it is used zero times in verses 3 through 12. So was that on purpose or was that a mistake? Now, I've written enough papers in seminary to know that once you choose a person, first, second, third person, once you choose who you're addressing or writing about, you're to stay in that throughout the paper, and a good professor, a good English teacher will start picking it apart if you start switching pronouns. So was Paul just that bad of a writer, or was Paul truly addressing two different people groups? I'm of the conviction at this point that he was addressing two different people groups. Again, this is a journey. I would have never even went down this road three years ago, you know, but now my studies have brought me to the point where I believe he's addressing two different people groups. Now, some will point to Colossians 1, 1, and 2 and say that he doesn't make them as distinct in this opening to Colossians, Paul an apostle by Jesus Christ, by the will of God, and Timotheus, our brother to the saints and faithful brethren in Christ. Well, there's no comma there, but is he addressing two different groups there, or is he addressing one? As some will point to Colossians 1, 2 and say, see, there's no comma, you ran them together, he's talking to one people group. Then it becomes even more distinct when we get into 1 Corinthians chapter 1, Paul called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God and Sosthenes our brethren to the church of God, which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus called to be saints, comma, with all that in every place call upon the name of our, the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, both theirs and ours. Why would he be talking about theirs and ours? You know, I'm not going to be dogmatic about it, but I believe that it is a very strong argument. And the argument to me is that the saints is referring to the Jewish believers, and the faithful in Christ Jesus is referring to the Gentile believers. Again, I mean, the language as you look through Paul's letters, to me, seems to make it clear that he's talking to two different audiences there. And again, we're going to run with that premise as we work our way through the Now, notice in verse number four, I thank my God always on your behalf for the grace. Nope. I got to get back to Ephesians. I've done that so many times from the pulpit. And sometimes even may work according as he has chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy without blame before him in love. So, now bear in mind, if we're going to separate these two audiences, saints being believing grace Jews, Gentiles, to the faithful in Christ Jesus being believing Gentiles, when he says according as he has chosen us, he's still, he's talking still to the saints who were chosen before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy without blame before him in love. Well, let's look at some proof text. It is the nation of Israel that is in view. They are the ones who were chosen in him before the foundation of the world. And we see, you know, in the book of Genesis, we see that they were chosen before the foundation of the world. We see that they were chosen before the foundation of the world. We see that they were chosen before the foundation of the world. We see that they were chosen before the foundation of the world. We see that they were chosen before the foundation of the world. We see that they were chosen before the foundation of the world. We see that they were chosen before the foundation of the world. We see that they were chosen before the foundation of the world.
