During the probationary period, teachers need to understand their contract and how long it lasts, which is usually one to four years. They don't have a guaranteed contract after that period. Administrators provide professional development, mentorship, and constructive criticism to help teachers succeed. Teachers should be open to learning, ask questions, and communicate effectively. Having said that, it is important that you know and understand your teaching contract and, specifically, how long your probationary period is. Typically, it's at least one year, but not more than four. During that probationary period, remember, you don't have any right to be re-employed or offered a contract, what we call year-over-year. As stated earlier, your administrators want you to succeed, so embrace the professional development offered, embrace the mentorship, the constructive criticism, adapt your practice, ask questions, and keep an open line of communication. Knowledge is power, and you'll do just fine.
