This map shows the different lengths of time it takes for teachers to gain tenure in different states. Some states have reciprocity licensure, meaning a teaching license from one state can be used in another state. However, this reciprocity does not apply to tenure. Each state has its own requirements for tenure, so it's important to understand the specific requirements in each state. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the tenure requirements in the United States. Tenure varies from state to state, and this map is representative of the length of time before tenure is afforded to teachers, if tenure is afforded at all. It's also worthy to note that although some states have what we call reciprocity licensure, which means you could have a teaching license earned in Kansas and it may work, say, in Nebraska. Other states do not, and you have other requirements that must be fulfilled, sometimes another test that needs to be taken. You should also understand that this reciprocity is not a thing when it comes to tenure from state to state. So take just a moment and familiarize yourself with the United States and its respective tenure requirements.
