It's good to welcome you here on this January afternoon that's beginning to act like January again. We're delighted to welcome Dr. Jimena DeBrock, who Ben will introduce a little bit more thoroughly in a few minutes. Throughout this year, our parish, as so many parishes, are really deeply engaging with the Eucharistic renewal that's going on throughout our country, and Dr. DeBrock is here as part of one of our ongoing efforts to help us build more deeply and root more deeply into the life of the Eucharist. One of the most beautiful phrases to come out of the documents of the Second Vatican Council is the Eucharist is the source and summit of our life as Christians, and so every experience that we have of the Mass, every experience we have of adoration, and everything that flows from that strengthens us, the knowledge that Christ truly dwells with us. So we're very glad to have you, Dr. DeBrock, so delighted to have you join us this evening, and I'll let Ben do a little bit of an introduction. Thank you, Fr. John David, and thank you all again for coming, just to reiterate Fr. John David's welcome. I'm very excited about this presentation. I'm very happy to have Dr. DeBrock with us. My experience with Dr. DeBrock was in courses that I had in my seminary studies at St. Mary's up in Baltimore, and I had Dr. DeBrock for Prophets and for Pentateuch, I believe, right? And they were probably some of the hardest classes that I had in my study. They were a ton of work. We had a lot of papers to write, the tests took forever, we couldn't finish the tests in class, we'd have to go to our office after hours to finish them, I mean, to finish the essay questions. It was a lot. And we weren't very good about it, we used to complain a lot, I think, we weren't very good students. But even after that, even after all the complaints and lamentations, oh, Naina, what are you doing to us? I honestly can say that I came out of those courses with a much greater appreciation of Scripture, particularly Old Testament, and the story of salvation history as it builds up to our encounter with Jesus Christ in the New Testament. If it wasn't for those studies, I wouldn't have as great of an appreciation for the New Covenant and Jesus as I do now. So her experiences are, and her knowledge of Scripture and experiences in teaching are incredible, some of the best I've ever encountered. Probably some of the only I've ever encountered, too, so there you go. But I won't go into Naina's resume, it's very long, she's taught in many Catholic universities, including St. Mary's in Baltimore, Mt. St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, St. Vincent's in Latrobe, I think, too, some time at Franciscan, and currently serves with the Catholic Leadership Institute, as well, and I'll let her say a little bit more about that. So without further ado, we'll begin here with Dr. Brock, so thank you very much for being here. Thank you, good evening. Can you hear me okay? Okay, thank you. So what I would like to do, some of us have got to go over to celebrate the literacy, but I don't like to give any presentation that's there, so I would like to have a start in prayer, and if that's possible, I'd like to, just for a few moments, for you to hold your eyes, raise your hands, whatever it is you're comfortable with, but I'd like to invite you to pray for me, so that I can lead that into my service presentation. So I'm going to begin with some of the questions, and I'm sure I'm going to reply to most of them very quickly. So if you don't mind, I'm just going to hold these here for you. Thank you very much. I would like to thank you for being with us here tonight. I'd like to thank you on behalf of all the organizations who are closer to you. And after this presentation, I'll have the opportunity to come to you in a new way, in a very new way, and then I'll have the opportunity to get to communicate with you in a new way. And I hope that in a minute or two, you'd like to know what I'm going to say. All right, so thank you, Dennis, for that introduction. Yes, there was a rumor, my favorite rumor, that I can't go very long. And you might be left thinking that I can't go that much too long, but I didn't believe you. It didn't make me long when I answered the questions, because I did think that I would sit down at the same time as they did, and I would finish, and then go on to the next one. But sometimes I take a little longer. So there is part of that rumor's truth. And another rumor that's happened a little while ago in Canada is that I would probably be able to sit there for a good amount of time and see how long it took me before I could sacrifice my election. Which is another legend, partially, but partially true. So yes, Google invited me to go deeper into the subject, probably because I needed to understand it better. Do I understand it fully? Not fully. But I do understand it better. Just a brief elevator speech for whether or not I vote for Kathleen Shippens, because we have somebody from Kathleen Shippens who's joining us tonight. I won't ask him to stand up, but it is a beautiful way to talk to us. That's also why I preach the Shippens parish leaders, because that's where my faith in the parish is. And just, you know, more co-operative with that, because that would be more viral, and that would be less devastation. So I just work with them. And I teach one time, one day a week at Montgomery Seminary. So it's a short-term educational process. And it's just a life-changing experience for you to see. I was born into a Catholic family. I was very, my parents were very religious. I liked getting into Mass. There was enough, the possibility of not going to Mass was not part of the conversation with my parents. I went to Catholic school. And I tell you about it in the background, because you can realize how all the things that have been explained in this document still might not work as we would expect. And that was kind of the thing was that I came out of that uncomfortable. I actually didn't even know. I didn't know the place. I didn't know the word. I just did not know anything. I didn't even bother to get a journal. I could stand up, you know, like anybody else, and I really didn't understand what it meant to be a Christian. And probably one of my biggest passions was, you know, I had no way to get to a church. How did that happen? I have no idea. I know that the business was complicated. We had to go to a church. Well, but we didn't pray to a church. We just didn't do that. And so, at some point, the word of God came first in my heart, and that's just my natural satisfaction. So, it comes from a personal experience of having tried to understand, fortunately, what it is that the word of God actually is. So, for me, that's a new kind of comfort, a very conversion change from reading Scripture, and in particular, a change in where you go with that. I had no idea what was happening back then. Even though I sat in that for 25 years, I knew that it was something beautiful, special, but I couldn't tell you what was special about it. I had no idea if it was in connection with what we were here in the workplace. And so, to understand that the workplace is giving us a narrative of salvation and communion, that narrative becomes actually real in some of our very lives. And so, this was a huge way for me. So, some of you might have had a much softer heart, and you let it burn around, and it took you a long time to get to where you were aware of what you were invited to do. So, we have an image of the Lamb. John the Baptist, and we hold the Lamb in God. And we have, of course, the image of the praise elevating the host during the Consecration. What I hope I'm going to have today, in the short time together, is that there is a deep connection. And so, in order to do that, we're going to work through three segments of experimentation. One of them is for us to understand sacrifice as gift. The other one is to look at openness and sacrifice. Another view of what probably took them maybe eight to ten weeks, and then you did have to write a lot of documents. A lot of documents. And lastly, look at the balance of the both, and how that connects to our convocation. So, just if you have any questions, thoughts, just stop me, write to me. And I will still answer these questions. So, the first one. Sacrifice. What is it? To begin with, it is a very large and misunderstood concept. I think people do not fully, most of us, understand what it means. But when I look at the rest of the dictionary, this is what it tells us. And that took off into an idea of self-impression. It also says that it's destruction or surrender of something for the sake of something else. And it also says that it's a loss. What else can we say that sacrifice is? What else can we say sacrifice is? Okay. There's a conversation. Okay. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes, thank you so much. Thank you. Self-denial. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.
