Arlene and Tarina discuss the controversy surrounding animal testing. They acknowledge that it is necessary for developing safe products, but also express concerns about the cruelty involved. They mention alternative methods like using deceased human bodies or finding cruelty-free options. They note that animal testing is time-consuming, expensive, and may not accurately mimic human reactions. They are shocked by the large number of animals killed in laboratories each year, and question whether it is worth it. They conclude that while animal testing may be necessary, there should be efforts to find more humane alternatives. Hey, it's Arlene and Tarina. Today we're going to be going over 3B controversies, starting with animal testing. If you don't already know what animal testing is, they use it to test the safety and efficiency of cosmetic and drug industries. Okay, so I'm kind of thinking that, like, I get it because, like, I don't want to put stuff on my skin that's not gonna be good for me. Yeah, you're just gonna, like, grab random people and just, like... Okay, anyways, sorry for that, but that was just me. But, back to that, um, our opinions on that little... Even though it is for, like, a good reason, so we don't, like, die from their products, I feel like it's, like, still super cruel, but, like, I get it now, you know? But I feel like there could be different ways to, like, do it. Yeah. Okay, on to the other pro. Animal testing is necessary because it helps develop life-saving medical treatments for not only humans but animals, and it helps determine how medicine will react to the human body. Animal testing is appropriate for medical research because testing helps develop life-saving medical treatments for humans. Okay, so, basically, I get what they're saying because they can't just, like... The companies can't just have us, like, taking medicine and, like, putting stuff on our face that's gonna, like, make us, like, super, you know... It's all good for us. It's, like, just don't put it in your mouth, guys. Don't... I mean, I get it because it's a law. They can't just, like, put stuff out in the world for people to use if it's gonna have, like, a bad effect on us. But I feel like there could be other ways. Like, it's still animal testing, you know? Yeah, I feel like... That's true. Like, I do... I agree. But, like, I feel like I don't think, like... I mean, yeah, it's true. Like, animals are, like, similar to humans and, like, you wanna know how it reacts on the human body, but, like... Isn't that, like... Yeah, it's, like... Really? It's, like, they do it in such a cool way, too. It's not, like, they're putting actual make-up. Yeah, yeah. How do you do it in a nice way, though? I know, but, like... Yeah, like, it's just... No, they let them sit in their own, like, puddle of blood or, like, they just, like, I've seen so many, like, videos... Well, either way, it would still be mean even if they do. I know, but they let them sit through that pain, though. They're not, like, killing them off. They, like, they're, like, oh, they're still alive, so let's just do more. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I saw one of the... Yeah, when I was looking for some of the pros, it said, like... It was saying, like, they sit them through this pain, like, their whole entire life. Well, I guess that makes sense. Like, they don't just, like, let them free at some point because they're already... I know, but they can, like, let them down easy and just, like, kill them off if they're really suffering that much. I feel like I don't even know what they would... Like, what would we do if we don't have animal testing? What would be another... I feel like one of the things, instead of using animals, would be using death remnants. If they're going to die anyways, I feel like... I feel like it would rather... It would be better if they rather die for, like, a good reason than to actually have them killed. Wait, are you really... Because there's a lot of products in the world. Are you really going to find a bunch of those people that, like... I mean, probably not, but I feel like it'll take some of the... That would be... Wait. You're not allowed to make them suffer when they die. So that wouldn't immediately kill them. Like, you'd kill the animals. You're right. I don't know, but they also do tests on actual house pets, like cats and stuff. Like, I get on frogs and rabbits, because a lot of people do experiments on those. In class, we dissect those to cats and dogs. I feel like that's... Did I say dogs? Yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh. Yeah, so... Yeah. Let's just take their... Take their cat. Get it injected. Now we're moving on to the cons. Okay. So we got this from the Humane Society of the U.S. website. Okay, so it's basically saying, animal experiments are time-consuming and expensive. Animal experiments don't accurately mimic how the human body and human diseases respond to drugs, chemicals, or chemicals. Wow. Okay. Well, we just read in the cons that it said they're really close to human bodies and stuff like that, so now it's saying that they can't accurately mimic it. Oh. Well, maybe it's talking about, like, they're similar, but it doesn't mean they're exactly the same. So that is true. Just because they're similar doesn't mean they're exactly the same, completely, like, the same. Yeah. But, like, there's nothing else that could be more similar. Like, what could you use? You should use, like, the human, like, from dead bodies. I don't know. Yeah. Nobody knows they're dead, so you can't... I get it. That is, like, their only option as well. Yeah. And then it says, animals are very different from humans and therefore react differently. Increasing numbers of the people find animal testing unethical. Which is basically what we were saying. But, like, they're not exactly the same, so some humans would react differently from how the humans are reacting to them. I mean, the animals are reacting differently. So, yeah. Next. Well, each year more than 110 million animals, including mice, rats, frogs, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, monkeys, fish, and birds are killed in the United States. Laboratory. Oh. U.S. United States Laboratory. Oh, my God. That's crazy. 110 million animals. Okay. Do you think that's really weird? That, like, after, like, extinction... I know. Just for, like, I get, like, the whole medicine for medicine, because, like, we need that. But for, like, cosmetics? Like, bro. Find another way. But I have noticed a lot more big makeup brand companies are making their products cruelty-free. Which, that means it can be done. Yeah. I feel like it would take, like, a lot longer. Yeah, but it's still, like, a lot of people are choosing the only cruelty-free options. So, that's, like... Yeah. If they weren't able to buy their stuff. Yeah. It would take... It probably would take, like, time to find, like, animal-testing-free... Makeup products. Makeup products. And, like, when you're making it, it's going to take a lot longer. But, like, 110 million animals? That's... That's insane. That's insane. Yeah. Is that really worth it? Maybe. Maybe not. 100 million. I don't think so. I don't think so. Yeah. And the squirrels. I know. We've seen, like, really bad pictures. If you guys search up animal-testing, that's what they're doing to animals. And at the same time, like, we're talking about... At the same time, we're talking about how bad animal-testing is. But, like, most of the products that we use in our everyday lives... Yeah. ...includes or uses animal-testing. But what should we do? Like, most of the products in the world are, like, animal-testing. Yeah. You're right. Are for animal-testing. Okay. So, what are... What is our conclusion, do you think? I obviously think that animal-testing is necessary, but I think there could... ...could be different ways to, like, do it, you know what I'm saying? Mm-hmm. Yeah.
