The speaker discusses the challenges and pressures of being an adult and the difficulties of making decisions about one's future. They talk about reading a book called "On Adulting" and how society expects young people to go to school, get good grades, and choose a career path at a young age. They mention the struggle of deciding what to do with their life and the pressure to conform to societal expectations. They also mention a friend who changed their major after realizing they didn't want to pursue a career in education. The speaker expresses their own uncertainty about their future and questions the purpose of college if they end up not using their degree. They believe that society's expectations are unrealistic and express their desire to hear others' thoughts on the matter. being an adult is so fucking draining like so hard honestly and in this episode of the College Connect podcast where I want to talk about a different kind of topic that is not really talked about I feel like enough so I'm gonna dive right in. I've been reading a book, I'll start off with that, I'm reading a new book it's called On Adulting and I'm pretty sure it's gonna be like at least a few people are listening to this are like oh my god that's so cringe you're reading a book on having to be adult yes because being an adult is hard and to all those kids in college right now who are like figuring out just partying and drinking like you know go off do your thing but I guess for me personally like being home I'm like not doing a lot of things like I have a lot of thoughts a lot of things in mind and a lot of different thoughts that include like what the hell I do for the rest of my life what college am I gonna transfer to what am I gonna even do tomorrow am I gonna wake up on time for class tomorrow like there's a lot of different things that go in my mind and one of the things is like what am I gonna do for rest of my life which is a big fucking question like you're put in society as a person who is expected to go to school get like a 3.5 or above GPA in high school do like five APs and then go to college do some more work drop out of college or be successful in college and get a degree and then go work for another six years well 60 years I should say not six years unless you're somebody who you know does something else becomes entrepreneur whatever else you want to do you know figures out your way around or just marries rich and it's it's hard like in this book which is why I'm mentioning it it like mentions like basically how society treats us in the way that like you know we're raised to go to school you know follow the rules you know blah blah and then we get to high school junior year and we're like oh my god expecting about college and SATs and all that like and SAT scores are hold everything out once I went like another episode but this is not about SAT scores like it's just a crazy idea to me how like you go to high school to prepare for college and then college it's like next year I'm gonna do for the rest of your life in the matter of four years at the age of like 18 like 23 24 whenever you graduate you get like a master's or whatever you do like I think that's crazy like I don't know if other people think about this or I'm just like insane for thinking about this at like you know the ripe age of like 19 being a freshman but like I don't know man I think it's just way too much to ask of like a 20-year-old kid to like know what they want to do for their lives and like the reason I really want to talk about this because I had a friend text me about this recently and she was like you know I'm transferring soon to like Montclair and I'm doing so-and-so major but I don't want you that major I don't want to the first of my life and I'm like yeah you know like you it's hard to do something for us to your life like we're literally teenagers still or just young adults whatever may be like it is so hard to pick what you want to do for us to your life when you're literally again like the ripe age of like 18 to like 22 so hard like I don't know what I'll do tomorrow like how do I decide what I do the rest of my life and have to pay like you know 30 grand or you know more per year for college and like get a cause and I'm like okay what I do now or like you know we don't like your major you don't like you know what you got your degree for like there's a kid in my classes in college right now and he went to Colgate University which of course is a really good school he plays football and he's like yeah I got a degree in education and I was like oh then why are you in a business class I'm like why are you here he's like well I got the degree and I realized I don't want to work at a school and I found that like kind of like you know I was just a little bit wowed by that I'm like you know that's really cool that you know you're here now trying to get a business degree like you know you didn't want to do education like you know it takes a lot to do that it's like some people would just be like no I'm done like you know no more school for me I'm done I'm just gonna you know settle for less and do this you know education thing when they don't want to and I gave him credit for that but I was like you know it does take a lot to like go back to school after going through four years of college and then being like you know like this isn't what I actually want to do and going back but like that's the thing that like nobody wants to do that I feel like for the most part is that you know going to college get a degree then going back to high school or not to high school to community college like it's a lot to decide that like you go to college thinking you're gonna get a degree and then you're gonna go on to the workforce or whatever else you may do but it's so like hard to do that in society like we're programmed to do that but like it's a lot like I don't know what I want to do with my life first of all I'm just gonna put that out there which I'm sure people can assume that but like I don't know what I'm gonna do with my life I don't know what I'm doing tomorrow I don't know you know whatever I'm gonna do but like I don't even want to do such a young age is just like most difficult thing ever and I think the college system is really like fucked for that like making or like having people decide what they want to do for the rest of their lives at such a young age and then having to spend like for some colleges it's like over like 50 grand like a year and then you're like I don't want to do this anymore like it's just so hard to be like well I'm gonna drop out because you know you're have your parents you have like your friends like everyone's like expecting you to like you know go to college get this degree but like what if you don't like what you're doing then what like what if you don't like your degree you don't like your class you don't like your roommate like there's so many things that can go into college and to like your life when you're in college that like it's hard to really decide what you want to do right then and there like when you're at school and I feel like for a lot of people at least some of my friends have been like yeah I don't really love college I'm like yeah it's kind of why I went to candy class I wasn't sure if I'd love you know the whole college thing and all that but for those people who are in college and like you know doing something they don't really want to do I give you guys all the credit in the world but I also would say you know don't worry about disappointing everyone around you worry about disappointing yourself and figuring out what you want to do with your life is I can't tell you for sure let's let's get that clear I cannot tell you for sure but it's definitely I'm assuming a process and I think it's a lot of trial and error and everything else I have no idea if I'm gonna you know actually pursue business when I'm you know out of college or whatever I end up doing I don't know if I'm gonna transfer in the next year like my grandmother is like you're gonna transfer right I'm like I don't know I have no idea like I could go to Rutgers in New Brunswick you know get a great degree and work for Johnson & Johnson but I don't know if I want to do that you know like it's just so hard to say whether I want to like get a degree and everything at this age because what if I don't use the degree what if I don't like the career I do like it's hard to start over and all that so the idea that we have to decide this at such a young age just it's insane to me and for any of you watching this I'd love to know your thoughts on this because I don't know I just this is one of the reasons why I just never really agreed the whole college system is because like if I didn't want to do it like this age is just it's crazy to me it really is and I'm actually have a new club at the school I go to that involves like podcasting and all that I'd love to talk about this and that with that club because I think it'd be a really good conversation but yeah I'd love to hear what you guys you know whoever listening think of this idea because I think society is just crazy for this idea that you know we have to know we want to do for us to our lives at age 18 you know 19 whatever it may be and just settle for that like go to go to a workforce stay there for 20-30 years you know retire at a you know 55 whatever it may be and then like a collect savings and you know 401ks and everything else I just I don't know I just think it's a little bit like crazy that enough expected of us and I actually would have to look up like you know what the percentage of people who actually like stick with their single career their whole lives is because I feel like it's gonna be a very like me weird median of people who actually like stick with their career like their whole life like I hear people you know go to college to get a degree in you know psychology and they just do the exact opposite like I've had family members who go to a Columbia graduate school and get a degree in psychology and she never used it and I think it's just crazy like how you can spend so much time you know working towards the degree a degree a degree and just like not using it but let me know what you guys think of this I'm curious to see what others have to say about this and it's just kind of a weird topic to talk about on this podcast it's not really involving other people but I do think it's a very like modern topic to talk about so yeah I hope you guys enjoyed this little rant flash you know yapping of me about this topic and do let me know you guys think about this because I'm really curious to know and yeah make sure to follow the podcast on Instagram on at the college neck podcast and yeah I think that's all I got for today and I hope to see you guys next episode peace
