Two friends, Orsic and Minith, are preparing to play a game. They introduce themselves and discuss their character classes. The Dungeon Master explains the rules and mechanics of the game. They then begin their adventure in a land called Ghanian, where there are two peacekeeping governments, the Empire of Levar and the Kingdom of Eshin. They are on a quest to find work in the village of Moonshadow. Orsic is a dwarf mason who wants to explore and learn more, while Minith is an elf who dislikes people but enjoys the ruggedness of Quicksdown. They have been traveling together for 50 years. The Dungeon Master sets the scene and describes their location on a map. Okay, so now just because this is the actual take, I'll reintroduce myself. My name is Blaise. I'll be DMing. My name is Rosemary. And I'll be playing Minith, the High Elf Fighter. Who's subclass is? Arcane Archer. Oh! No, I forgot that. No worries. I'm Ed. I'll be playing Orsic Stonehead, Hill Dwarf Barbarian Level 3. Awesome. Subclass? I don't have a subclass. You do. I do? Yeah, where do I see that? It should be the totem thing. Totem? Where on here do we see that? Orsic Stonehead, Hill Dwarf Barbarian Level 3 with Form of the Beast as a subclass? Path of the Beast. Path of the Beast. Okay. Okay. So Barbarian, Path of the Beast subclass. Okay. Cool, cool, cool. Okay. So, seeing as this is your first session, I'm going to just sort of give you a rundown of how this works. I will do a little bit of introduction. At some point, I will turn it over to you guys to kind of describe your characters, who you are, what you're about, in your words. This can be very brief. And then I will begin to narrate events that take place. And you guys will tell me what you'd like to do. There will be times when I will ask for a specific check. You are more than welcome to ask for it yourself. My role as the DM is to determine who gets to and who does not get to roll for which. So, just some ground rules. Anything you roll without me asking you to, might as well not have happened. Do you want a paper towel or something to put those on? Yeah. Thanks. Yeah, because I don't... Yeah. No, I know. That's why I didn't want the... I needed a case of some kind. Yeah. I don't like the noise on the table. I have a question about the mechanics. Yes. So, is it always a d20 that you roll? If I'm asking you for a check of some kind, or to tell you to make a saving throw, or to roll an attack, that's all going to be a d20. Okay. Your other dice are going to be used more for damage than anything else. Okay. And then, for example, I have strength plus 3, so I roll and then I add the 3 to whatever's on the dice? For which star are you saying? For strength, I have a plus 3. So, if we do, like you say, a strength check, and I roll a 12, then that's a 15. That is the basic concept, yes. Okay. Now, the ability scores of just strength are usually going to be added to a check or an ability, such as a saving throw or an attack, wherein you will also then add your proficiency bonus. Okay. For the certain ones. Which are the more specific ones for the specific, like... Skills, yes. Right, yeah. Yes, exactly. Okay. And then you add what is next to that. Yeah. So, if there's a dot, then you can add your proficiency. If there isn't a dot, then you do not. You just use whatever skill is in the parentheses. Okay. So, for example, for athletics here, I don't have a dot, so I wouldn't add the plus 3? Correct. And then, if you look down there at history... Yeah, there's a dot. There's a dot there because you're getting an extra plus 2. That is your proficiency bonus. Plus 2? You see that there in the top left. Would that be on top of the intelligence? Yes. So, for me, specifically for history, it would be plus 1, plus 2, a general plus 3? That's the total. Your intelligence score is a minus 1. Oh, okay. So, this is already the total. So, that's already the total because the dot is there. Okay, okay. Gotcha. There are certain times when, like, I'll just sort of say, add your proficiency. Because maybe you don't, but because, you know, you've been talking about doing this specific thing so many times. Okay, okay. But, otherwise, it's what's on there is the total of things that are added or subtracted already. Yeah, yeah. Exactly. So, then we just add this? We don't add this in it? Yes. Okay. Correct. Cool, cool. Okay. So... There will be a couple spots where you'll probably have to remind me which to hit. Yeah, yeah. There will also be pauses for math doing and all kinds of shit. Don't stress. Don't be stressed. Too late. Okay. Okay. On the continent of Ghanian, a diverse landmass filled with various different peoples, cultures, and kingdoms, there are two main peacekeeping governments, the Empire of Levar, a loose federation of regions, each with varying degrees of autonomy, ostensibly united under the crown of the emperor, who claims dominion over the Sheet, the Neck, Kripstown, and, of course, the capital city. There is also the Kingdom of Eshin, a more consolidated kingdom made up of the Eshin provinces and their outlying settlements along the Spine. Eshin's influence extends north to the Sunfire River, beyond which lies a vast arid expanse known as the Waste. Outside of these two main forces are the as-yet-independent realms of the Elessar Wood, which is home to elves, gnomes, and all manners of beasts and fae, the Shattertooth, a desolate, frozen island landscape whose craggy and foreboding peaks are filled with giants and dwarves underneath, and the Waste itself, which remains at the mercy of wandering bands of orcish nomads. To the south lies Isten Isle, home of the isolationist community of High Elves, which seldom trouble themselves with the affairs of the continent. Prior to the rise of the Empire, various tribes, city-states, and petty kingdoms would go to war for power and influence. Since the arrival of the Lavar forces, a steady peace has arisen, where people have the freedom to live and work in their places of birth, or to set out and join an adventurer's guild to claim glory and riches. We zoom in on this continent and find two such glory-seekers who journey to the village of Moonshadow to find work. We see two figures, one taller, one shorter, walking along the road. And it is at this time I would ask you both to describe your characters, identify yourselves, and I'll tell you when to stop. Okay. Well, I'm orcic Stonehead. I'm 130 years old. I'm 130 years young. I'm a dwarf. I'm an excellent mason. I have lived in Crick's Woods? Down. Crick's Down. That's it. I knew that. I have lived in Crick's Down for the last hundred-odd years. I've been living and working here with the local population. I've built their houses. I've fixed their houses. I've built their sheds. Fixed their sheds. I've done and worked, built and worked on most of the houses that I see around me. And, you know, I feel like I've done most of what I can do in this little area that I live in. And I kind of feel like I want to go on to do something else. I feel like there's more to do. More things to learn. I'm sure if I go somewhere else, maybe I can learn something else about masonry. That would be cool. Or just get better at stuff that I'm already pretty good at. That would be cool too. But yeah. I like the people as much as you can like people. You know, they let me do work. They pay me for it. And then they leave. I like that part. And then there's Minif who comes by every now and then. He hangs out. He's cool. For an elf, I guess. I'm Minif. I am 308. And I'm from Istan Isle. I left when I was 142. I would like to point out that I am 195 centimeters, despite what Orphic says. He always says that I am 190. I am 195. Yeah, if you're that particular about 5 centimeters. I am that particular about 5 centimeters. Size is important. Debatable. You had your turn. I left because I wanted to see somewhere else firsthand. I read a lot about nature and stuff in my books. And there's only so much nature on an island. And I left. But then I realized I don't like people. The one thing the elves were right. Everyone else sucks. Yes. They were right. And that is the one thing I regret, is there are people here. Yeah, I just kind of traveled around. I keep coming back to Quickswood because I like that it's backwards a bit. I like that it's not fancy. It's a little more rugged, a little less hoity-toity, a little less fussy. Yeah, I find less fussy people less annoying. Iconic. Which is where I found that dwarf. Gesturing to Orphic, yes. And I hate him the least. I wouldn't necessarily say I like him, but I hate him the least. Fantastic. And I think prior to the first session here we elected to say that you guys have been crossing paths for about 50 years and have now been actually moving around and exploring the continent as a duo, a curmudgeonly duo, though you may be. It's like Grumpy and Sunshine, but it's Grumpy and Grumpy. I can't not see Crowley and Azura fail, so you just enjoy that. I'm Crowley. I'm Azura. I thought the rage monster would be Crowley. All right. So, the following takes place just in one of the border villages of the Empire, not too, too far from the edge of the Waste, which is the effective de facto border. Old scholars' maps will say that the lines are these, but anybody with a sense about them knows that when you've hit the sand, you have left the comforts of the kingdom or the Empire. Map question. The Waste is just underneath the foresty bit, right? Yes. Okay. Okay. And where? Can I point? Yep. So, where? It's going to be up in this little pocket here. Up in there. Okay. Actually, I have this saved on my computer. I can just drop it in the tab. Yes, that would be good. I even put it in my Trinity College stuff. Okay. Can you send it to me and I can airdrop it to you? Sure. All right. You should have that there. Yeah, I got it. That looks okay. All right. All right. So, you are at the lower reaches of the Neck, but not yet quite in the Elsarwood nor the Waste. Hang on one second. It's just airdropping me the map. Yep. Oh, oh, there it is. Okay. Is that it? I'm going to have to figure out how to, like, cue Mark on this so that I can know as we're recording when to cut. Anyway, so, excuse me. Uh... All set and ready? Yep. Cool. As they walk along this wooded—not wooded, sorry—along this road in this sort of hilly plain, there is a property, a fence marking a property, a farm by the look of it, to their left, at the far end of which lies the treeline to the beginnings of the Elsarwood. Up ahead stands a signpost, and sitting atop the—oh, excuse me. At this fork in the road, one fork turns left towards the treeline, and the other goes on up over the hills. And as you approach, you see a small figure sitting atop the corner of the fence. And upon approaching the signpost and this figure, you see that the sign pointing to the wood states, Moonshadow, 2 miles. And the one pointing further along over the hill reads, Waste, 18 miles. Eshin, 258 miles. At the junction of the fence—excuse me. At the junction, the fence turns down towards the treeline. Sitting atop the corner of the fence can be seen a small figure. As you approach, you notice that this is a halfling, and he appears to be taking a break from his farming. There's a little plow with a little pony, and for those of you unaware, halflings are the copyright-safe hoppits of D&D. So, that's why it's a pony. He's helping with the plow. And he's sitting there, he seems to be cutting into an apple and seems to be having a break. He waves to you as you approach. Morning. Morning. Hello. By the looks of you, it looks like y'all are some kind of adventurers. Yeah. I... You shy? Yeah. Oh, no worries. Don't start getting me to bug you. I'm just happy to see you're all well-armed. Boy, yeah. I'm prepared for anything. You know, he comes down to, you know... He points to the signposts next to him. He's like, when you're living at the crossroads, most people coming down here— I forgot what I talked about for a second. Most people coming down here are either going that way, pointing up to the waste. And he says, and I don't see them no more. And up until recently, that way also meant nobody coming no more, but... Gesturing to the Moonshadow sign, which does indeed look newer. He just started the settlement up maybe a couple months back. Seems to be doing pretty well. I assume y'all are heading that way? Yes, we are. Fantastic. Hey, all I'm saying is there's been a lot of whispers about goblins and folk trying to rob people as they're going by. So, keep your wits about you. Mm-hmm. Goblins robbing people? Not other... It's not a threat, right? No, it's a warning. What, warning threats? So, at this time... That's a clever question, Minis. I did not expect that. Looks like you both need to make an Insight check. So you're going to roll a d20. Yeah. And then on your character sheet you will find a skill called Insight, and you will add whatever number is next to that. Oh, yes. Good. Seventeen plus three is twenty. Dirty twenty. That is what we call a dirty twenty. A dirty twenty. Fourteen plus... Fourteen plus... Seventeen. Nice. He seems a little taken aback at yours. Like, genuinely hurt, just like... I'm just... I thought I was trying to be polite. I mean nothing by it. So, yeah, you see, he's flustered. Or itching for a fight. On a dirty twenty, I will say that he reeks of someone who thinks of himself as a kind person, and when he perceives that it's not read that way, he just doesn't know what else to do with himself. So he's just sort of, like, stunned himself. No? Well, that's good to know. Good man. All right. Oh. I'm just going to keep eating my apple, then. I think that's a good idea. So that way to Moonshadow? Yep, just that way. It's over there. All right. This is why we don't talk to people, then. Give me a perception check as you walk past him. Both of us? Yeah. Sixteen plus three is nineteen. As you fight the bug back in your ear, so you hear that, you swear you hear the halfling whispering to his horse, I thought that was nice. I didn't mean it. I really thought it was being nice. I mean, who just talks to people that are walking down the road? You continue. All right, we walk up to Moonshadow. You walk to the tree line. To the tree line, yes. And as you approach the tree line, love it when players are like, okay, so now what do we do when we get there? Well, you'll find out when you get there. Yeah, we're walking down the path. One of the three main pillars of D&D is exploration. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Another pillar would be roleplay, and the third is combat. And my intention is to utilize all. Quick check-in with you guys. It's not that massive of a continent. Has anybody ever been into or had any experience in the woods? Alastar Woods? Not this one, no. I know the Woodstown and Crekstown, I know that one, because I like keeping to myself. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And there's some things where woods are woods, some things are familiar, but I've never been to this part of the continent. I've probably been through there once, because I knew that there were elves there. Yeah, maybe it was one of the first, you know. It's like, oh, let's go find the other elves first. Exactly. I don't think I liked them very much. Yeah, it's a bit like being an American, thinking, I'll go to UK first, and you're like, oh, they're not me, they're different, and that's fine. Yeah. Yeah. Sorry, I can be racist against the British, right? The English, the English, certainly. The English, yes. Anyway, did you turn her off? Because she hasn't yelled at me once all day. I didn't. Weird. She's been yelling at Ed. That is true. Oh, why don't you both just roll me a quick history check, just to see what you might be aware of in LSR. The Seven. I don't add anything to that if I don't have proficiency, right? You would add whatever your intelligence score is, if you don't have proficiency. So, yeah, so I don't think that you had, if you had interacted much at all with anybody from the wood LSR, you certainly didn't commit it very deeply to memory. You probably are, you know, you're looking at a wood. You've been in woods. That's a forest. Sure does have foresty things. Yeah. Yes, and so then I would like for you either to roll me a, as you begin progressing through the wood, into the, you know, there is a very clear road here. There are signs of civilization. It's not, you know, you're not going to need to make survival checks to get lost, to not get lost, but just a couple of perception checks, I think, just to signify, like, do you notice anything over the next two hours? So we'll roll, each of you roll two, please. So one first. One, first one is 13. And then, oh, sorry. One. This is the two of you over the one. Yep. Nine is, which one did you say, perception? Plus three. So 12 and a. And a 13. And a 13, cool. Nothing particularly jarring happens over the course of this first mile. Roll me another one. 12. 21. So you are the first to notice what sounds to be sobbing. And as you round the bend, you see a cottage, and it looks to be in a state of disarray, to put it mildly. The windows are shattered, glass panes hanging in the frame. The door has been kicked open, or, you know, knocked off its hinges a bit. The front area, I would call it a yard, but, you know, we're dealing in forest cottages, what is a yard? The front of the house is strewn with torn up, what looks to be linens and clothing and ceramic plates and just sort of disarray. And the sound that you have heard is coming from a woman who is sitting on the front stoop here over what appears to be a body. And you round the corner. She does not appear to be terribly aware of your presence. So, okay. I don't really know what to do. Is it a crying person? Well, Minis, we're looking for adventure. Yes. Something happened here. It could be the beginning of an adventure. I mean, I doubt she was merely redecorating. It seems like an involuntary redecorating from other people. So, I say we find out who put the dead body there. It's an adventure, Minis. Come on. Oh, my baby. Walk up to the woman. Fine. Is it, like, afternoon? Oh, yes. Short. Midday. Midday. Okay. Good afternoon, good woman. She jumps. Who are you? How many? Do you have a rough guesstimate? Four or five. Okay. I think we can say four or five goblins. That's easy. Well... Looks down again at her. Yes, but that's a person. And then we turn around and we go that way. Okay. This is a good entry-level adventure, Menace, I think. I think so, too. You know, to sort of dip our toes in the water. Yes. Along the... Plastics. Humans are fully, like, the most common humanoid on any continent within the D&D space. Yes. So, like, not crazy familiar, but also not alien to aging rates of humans. Towards the left-hand side, you will see underneath your first box. Some are on the left. Is your passive senses. Yes. Passive insight, passive investigation, and passive perception. Yes. Yes. Okay. As you are walking, who... Now, you're in the forest. You could be abreast. You could be in a line. How do you think you two usually would approach this sort of thing? I think if we're walking on a road road, we're walking next to each other. So, it's just a question of that little clearing into the woods. I'm guessing that's off the main road. So, it would just be like if we can walk next to each other. Yeah. I think to help better build the picture, the road you've left would fit a carriage. This wouldn't fit a carriage, but it's not an uncomfortable walk either. Yeah. I think if we can fit next to each other, then we walk next to each other. Otherwise, I'll probably walk ahead because you can see over me and I can't see over him. Yeah. And I make that very clear every time he tries to step in front of me. I think that also complements your builds, right? Yeah. As a barbarian, you would need to have a clear path to the thing. And as an archer, you would not. And so, you could do what you got to do from back there. Yeah. He can stay more at a distance. Thanks, sniper. Fantastic. Now, as you go, do you discuss the plan at all? Um, yeah. The best intel you have is... go ahead. Yeah. Do so. So, four to five goblins. Yeah. I mean, but... I was supposed to have a hideout of some sort. Yes. Brilliant. They live somewhere. I would say so. Right? So, I would say, as we keep walking down here, if we see... If we feel that we're approaching where they gather, we take a moment, we observe, and then we figure out the best strategy to take them all out without killing the baby. Because I feel... I know what... We're supposed... the baby's supposed to be alive. Yes. We're bringing the baby back, and we're bringing it back alive. So, yeah. In one piece. Yeah. I like this plan. This is a good plan. Yeah? Yeah. I like this plan. This is a good plan. I have a question about the sort of path that we're going through. Is this like a little travel path, or is that something like beating through the brush and stuff? It is a clear, but not cut, path. Okay. There's not much guesswork in where the trail's going. Not a couple times. But it is not a maintained path. And, in fact, both of you have to stoop a bit at times. Okay. And just for your familiarity, at level three you would surely face goblins by now. You know that they are not very large in stature. Yeah. You do notice whatever passives... Also, I'm asking for passives because you have not said that you would like to do anything. Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is a point of order for the newbies. The passives are there so that I, as the DM, can intervene if you maybe want to examine something. It is, can I check this place out? Do I believe her? It's questions from you guys as well, whenever you would like to... Yeah. So I was asking about the path because if it's like something that was beaten through the brush, right, like a newer thing where they jumped out of the bush and then jumped back, do you see more obvious things of like, okay, this is where a group of little goblins has just barreled through? But if it's a more well-worn path, then that might be like a different sort of insight in it. Because that was going to be my next question. If I see footprints or like a lot of broken branches or something, if it's like freshly cut, then it's like very clear where they're barreling through. So why don't you give me an investigation or survival check. Okay. So you roll your d20 and add, why don't you choose which of those two is higher. Yeah. And I don't put the bonus unless it has, unless it's like ticked, right? Yeah, but you just, whatever number is next to it should be... Well, because like survival, I have the number next to it as plus one, and investigation it's minus one. Because you're proficient in survival but not investigation. Yeah. So then... Survival. That's a 16, and then plus one, 17. Okay, fantastic. So you can see this is not a well-worn path. It is, like I said, it's a clear path that has several footprints. And I think on a 17 you can see that there are several pairs of footprints, most of which are going in the direction you're going. Okay. Would I guess that those were the gauntlet footprints or just footprints? I would say with a 17, they're larger than you might expect. Okay. But you're not a ranger, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. You don't really know, but they're a little bigger than you might... Expect from a goblin. From a goblin, yeah. Okay. Yeah, yeah. Okay, cool. I think we're on the right path. I say we keep going down this way. As you continue to do so, you find that the path actually kind of comes to a halt. And in doing so, you're able to hear sounds. You're hearing... tearing, like... Like an animal eating kind of thing? Like something eating. Something eating, okay. But as at this time, I would like to ask your intention. When you are in a party, you have a couple different approaches, right? You can get eyes on, do so stealthily. You can barrel in. You can take literally any strategy you might like to take. How would you two just go about recon? I would like to get a look at the thing making the noise. Yeah. I have a plus four in stealth. Okay. My thought was I can sneak. Okay. A little closer, you mean? Yeah. Like, to get a look at it? Mm-hmm. So I can go for it. Yeah. Would you like to? Yeah. Go ahead, roll me a stealth check. It's a 19 plus four. Hell yeah. 23. Nice. Okay. And so now, what exactly is the plan? Because only you have rolled this. Yeah. So you're the one approaching. Yeah. What's your plan? Are you going to? I just want to take a look at it. You are able to kind of reach the clearing and remain hidden as you see there are four tents pitched in a sort of ring around a fire pit. And you see what you would know to be able to identify as goblins, sort of like sitting hunched, kind of over. And you can like walk around, and you kind of get a good sense. They're holding meat, and their faces are dripping with blood. And they are. Do either of you speak goblin? No. I speak gnomish. So no. No. It's a gnome. Comedy. Anyway. And in addition to the ones you see sitting and eating, above the line of tents, you can see the neck and shoulders of... Well, give me a... Nature or... Nature check. Give me a nature check. That would be a six. It's the biggest fucking goblin you've ever seen. It's terrifying. You have no idea why that thing is so big. Nice. This is what you see. Okay. I sneak back. Give me another check. If my plan was sneak there and back, does the sneak not then count, like the original sneak check wouldn't count? The die you rolled got you to the clearing. Okay. This is a new action. Okay. You have to go back through. Okay. Shit. 17 plus four. 21. I got this. Yeah. And you do? You do. So, returning back to Aura Sick, you deliver this information. Yeah. Okay. How many were there? There were four tents. There were four tents. Four tents. Some goblins around five were eating. How many? What did you say? You said there were four tents and you were able to see into the clearing? Yeah. You could make out that there are... You saw at least two of them? Yeah. And the big guy. And the big guy. She's in a tent somewhere. I'm slightly concerned they're eating. Oh. Well, then I say we should hurry up. And maybe we can salvage at least some of the babies. As, like, an... Like a token for the grieving mother. I think that would be a nice thing. Right? I'm gonna... I mean, I always love having a little thing of a loved one that I've lost.
