Hooray! OK, so here's the first one. What do you call a girl standing in the middle of a tennis court? I've no idea. Annette! Oh, no. Now, why tennis jokes this week? Well, it's not that so long ago. It may seem like it because there's been so many sporting things going on. But not so long ago that Wimbledon tennis was happening again this summer. And that amazing Serbian, Novak Djokovic, who did so well in the men's singles. And I noticed he does sort of different things that indicate he's a Christian. And somebody else has commented that he's a well-known Orthodox Christian who regularly wears a wooden cross around his neck. And he's known for praying for his matches, as does his wife. So not only that, but one of his opponents this time, who's a Greek Orthodox Christian, started getting the crowds chanting for him, his opponent, Novak. So that's very interesting. And it made me think, well, what do I know about the Orthodox Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church? Well, nothing really. And so I was wondering where it comes from. So Peter's going to give us a little history now of where does the Eastern Orthodox Church come from? Well, not so much me. It's really Wikipedia giving this short version of it anyway. According to the Eastern Orthodox tradition, the history of the Eastern Orthodox Church is traced back to Jesus Christ and the apostles. The apostles appointed successors, known as bishops. And they in turn appointed other bishops, in a process known as apostolic succession. Now over time, five patriarchates were established to organise the Christian world. And four of these ancient patriarchates remain Orthodox today. The fifth one became known as the Roman Catholic Church. Orthodox Christianity reached its present form in the period from the 3rd to the 8th century, when the ecumenical councils were held. Doctrinal disputes were resolved. The fathers of the church lived and wrote. And Orthodox worship practices settled into their permanent form, including the liturgies and the major holidays of the church. Now in the early medieval period, Orthodox missionaries spread Christianity towards the north, to the Bulgarians, Serbs, Russians and others. In the late Middle Ages, the fall of Constantinople brought a large part of the world's Orthodox Christians under Ottoman-Turkish rule. Nevertheless, Orthodoxy continued to flourish in Russia, as well as within the Ottoman Empire, among the latter's Christian subject peoples. Now as the Ottoman Empire declined in the 19th century, and several majority Orthodox nations regained their independence, they organised a number of new Orthodox churches in southern and eastern Europe. Well that's a quick summary. And I think a very interesting part of that is simply to say that Orthodox worship practices settled into their permanent form over a thousand years ago. Right, well we'll sample some of this thousand-year-old worship music later this show. But right now, let's have something that's very much more recent. Olivia Newton-John, Let Go, Let God. Let Go Let Go And Let God Let the signs remind you We are passengers Let the signs remind you To surrender To surrender Let go Let God Let go Let go Let go Let go When faith has died in the fire And there's no spark to feed the flame Let go And let God When your courage fails you And the well of hope runs dry Let go And let God Let the signs remind you We are passengers Let the signs remind you To surrender To surrender Let go And let God Let go Let the signs remind you We are passengers Let the signs remind you To surrender To surrender Let go And let God Let go And let God Let go And let God Let go And let God Let go And let God Let go And let God Let go And let God Lots of activities are restarting after a summer break. So let's have a look around and see what we can find. Well, Cafe Plus at Keynsham Methodist Church is reopening after its summer break. On Friday the 1st of September it's open from 8.45 in the morning until 10.30. This is at the Queen's Road Centre. It's the place to go for a chat over tea or coffee and a bacon butty or cereals and toast where you'll find a friendly face and a listening ear. There's a soft play area for toddlers and a children's clothes swap. And it's open to everyone, so why not drop in and give it a try. Maybe you've been missing your bacon butties over the summer. Right, get back in there again, get some more. Now, at St Dunstan's this coming weekend is the Ecumenical Christian Meditation Group. That's on Saturday the 2nd of September from 10.45 to 11.45. And then on Tuesday the 5th of September is the Tuesday Group from 2.30 to 3.30pm both in St Dunstan's Church Hall. Or down at St Dunstan's again you might like to go along to the Art Group there on Wednesday the 6th of September from 11am to 1pm. Now, if you're not sure if that's your thing you can always just drop in and see what they get up to. Yes, indeed. Now, coffee. The Causton Coffee Shop is on again on Wednesday the 6th of September. That's from 10.30 to 12.00 noon. Now, King Jamil are putting on a new thing this time on a Sunday late afternoon. There's no food involved, so we're told. This is called Into His Presence. And it's starting on Sunday the 3rd of September at 5pm. So, everyone is welcome just to come along and join in this different way of getting into the presence of God. Now, the Brightstart Children's Centre services I believe they're still looking for Food Club volunteers who will be able to support the Food Club in the Children's Centre there on Thursdays. In the morning the volunteers receive the food they organise it and set up the club. In the afternoon they need volunteers as a customer service role handing out the foods and supporting families who arrive. So, both roles will involve handing money and food safely. There will be training provided if you feel this is something for you or someone you know who might be able to help them. So, what do you think? Do you know anyone who could help? Well, you could perhaps call in at the Children's Centre at the top of Rock Road or you could contact them at Right, now something completely different. Are you a handyman? Or do you know someone who could be? Or a handywoman for that? Now, St John's Church are looking for a handyman and caretaker. Maintenance and repair duties along with caretaking duties in the parish hall and the church. The post holder will be required to work 12 hours a week spread over the working week. The expectation is 3 hours a day on 4 out of the 5 days Monday to Friday. But flexibility can be offered. The work pattern will include some occasional weekend and evening working as necessary. The rate of pay? £10.42 an hour or £6,500 a year. The job would suit anyone who enjoys both DIY and contact with people. Further details are available from the parish office in one of the usual ways. Anyone interested can actually make contact and have a chat with somebody. The details are on our Facebook page or, of course, from the parish office. And details of this next ad will be there too. We actually mentioned this advert last week. This is for another caretaker. For the Methodist Church, well, maybe somebody will apply for both. Why not? Now, the caretaker wanted for the Methodist is for 8 hours a week to carry out caretaking duties at both Victoria and Queens Road centres. Flexible working to include out-of-hours cover. The rate of pay is £11 per hour. If you want more details, why not contact the church office? The closing date for applications is Friday 15th September. Now, we do have one longer term notice just to include now, on the 29th September. That's not really that far away. Churches together are organising a worship evening. Our team here from Believe Together will be hosting the event. And you may remember last week I mentioned something about cleaning out pipes. Well, what was that all about? Well, I got a chance to go in for about 10 minutes into a nice big worship event at Creation Fest down in Cornwall. And I felt as though it was like cleaning out those pipes that I'd been cleaning out under our kitchen sink. Yes, why don't you come along on 29th September. Stick that date in your diary. A Friday evening event. 7 o'clock for 7.30 start. Finish at 9 o'clock. Come and clean out your pipes. Right now, here's Stuart Townend with In Christ Alone. In Christ alone my hope is found He is my light, my strength, my song This cornerstone, this solid ground Burned through the fiercest drought and storm What heights of love, what depths of fear When fears are sure, when strivings cease Joy comes again, I know it all Here in the love of Christ I stand In Christ alone, who took our flesh Born into God, He led us safe This gift of love and righteousness Stored by the Lord, He came to save Till on that morn when Jesus died The wrath of God was satisfied For every sin on Him was laid Here in the love of Christ I stand In Christ alone, who took our flesh Born into God, He came to save Till on that morn when Jesus died The wrath of God was satisfied For every sin on Him was laid The light of His name Then bursting forth in glorious day Up from the grave He rose again And as He died in victory In Christ alone, it will all be For I am His and He is mine God with the flesh and blood of Christ No guilt in life, no fear in death This is the power of Christ in me From my first cry to final breath Jesus commands my destiny No power now, no king of man Can ever draw me from His hand To be returned for so behold Here in the power of Christ I stand No power now, no king of man Can ever draw me from His hand To be returned for so behold Here in the power of Christ I stand And now, over to Celia for the second question for the Just for Fun quiz Who lived, worked and murdered people at 186 Fleet Street in London? Ah, 186 Fleet Street, now I recognise that name, Fleet Street That's where all the newspaper publishers are, or they used to be I wonder if they are now Anyway, maybe it's one of their editors One of our good friends, David Bisington, produces a very different show on this radio station Let's hear him tell you all about it Hi, I'm Dave Bisington and it's my pleasure to present the Country Hour on KTCR 105.8 FM You will hear classic country hits, old and new, plus news on local clubs and gigs I'm looking forward to spending this hour with you Until then, keep it country! You're listening to Believe Together A Churches Together and Catesham and Salford production for KTCR FM 105.8 and online Now here's my leprosy mission diary verse for the week This time from Psalm 91 where it says For He will put His angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways So, going back to angels again A couple of years ago on Believe Together we invited listeners to tell us about their experiences with angels And we had a lot of people coming in to us and giving us reports And here's a couple of them These are from David and Elaine about some experiences in their families Well, my dad actually saw an angel It was in October 1985 And he awoke one evening while he was in bed Obviously, because we all tend to go to bed when we're asleep But about two in the morning and he opened his eyes and he saw an angel in the room How did he know it was an angel? Well, he felt within himself that it was an angel And he saw the eyes and they were looking at the door Guarding the house Guarding something And the angel was very powerfully built Had this blue glow around him But golden flaxen hair The sort of shoulder length flaxen hair, very powerfully built And he was unaware of my dad's presence My dad's looking at him But my dad caught his eye And then the angel looked startled and then disappeared But my dad believed that the angel was protecting the family from something through the night This was after Joel was born, which is our youngest child It was in the early weeks of him being born and he was still in his Moses basket Next to our bed, I remember it was midway through the night And Joel was asleep next to me And Martha, the little child, awoke me And I think it was, I don't know, two in the morning or something She was three and I remember her saying to me Mummy, who's that man? And I said, what man? And she said, the big one standing at the door And I was thinking, I can't see that The big man standing there at the door And then there's another one there, standing looking over Joel, the littler man I was like, what? Obviously I'd just woken up, I was puzzled by it What she was saying Again, I think we've got guardian angels around us Keeping watch over us when we sleep I marvel at that And through the eyes of children, these things are sometimes revealed Through danger seen and unseen There's protection all around Under refuge of God's wings Security is found For there are angels watching you To keep you in all of your ways Keeping you from stumbling, so don't be afraid God's appointed angels watching over me Angels watching over me Angels watching over me Angels watching over me Unseen hands guiding me through my storm and through my rain Healing hands holding me through the darkness of my pain Wings of loving have found me, so I do not fear For I can feel the presence coming near Nothing but angels watching over me Angels watching over me Angels watching over me All night, all day Angels watching over me All night, all day Angels watching over me All night, all day Angels watching over me All night, all day Angels watching over me Angels watching over me Angels watching over me All night, all day Angels watching over me All night, all day Angels watching over me All night, all day Angels watching over me All night, all day Angels watching over me And now, time for the final question for the Just For Fun quiz Over to Celia And finally, who lived at 41 Nelson Mandela House in Peckham? Well, thank you Celia, that sounds like a simple one Nelson Mandela House Oh, but just a minute, he's not fictional Oh well, I'll find out when we get the answers Anyway, we had a Christmas song earlier Now let's have an Easter song Rend Collective, Resurrection Day Because you're living I can rise Because you're living I'm alive Because your cross is powerful Because you rose indestructible I can get up off the floor This is my resurrection day Nothing's gonna hold me in this grave This is my resurrection day Nothing's gonna hold me down Say goodbye to my yesterdays Ever since I met you I am shaken This is my resurrection day Nothing's gonna hold me down Because you're all I've thrown away Because my debt is all been paid Because you stand in victory Because you crushed the enemy I can get up off the floor This is my resurrection day Nothing's gonna hold me in this grave This is my resurrection day Nothing's gonna hold me down Say goodbye to my yesterdays Ever since I met you I am shaken This is my resurrection day Nothing's gonna hold me down Good news is good news Because you chose to run across Good news is the good news Because you rose up from the dust Your gospel is the power That is taking over I can get up off the floor Come on get up off the floor This is my resurrection day Nothing's gonna hold me in this grave This is my resurrection day Nothing's gonna hold me down Say goodbye to my yesterdays Ever since I met you I am shaken This is my resurrection day Nothing's gonna hold me down This is my resurrection day Nothing's gonna hold me in this grave This is my resurrection day Nothing's gonna hold me down Say goodbye to my yesterdays Ever since I met you I am shaken This is my resurrection day Nothing's gonna hold me down Nothing's gonna hold me down Nothing's gonna hold me down Nothing's gonna hold me down Nothing's gonna hold me down And now for another tennis joke Peter Hooray! Okay, I wish they'd changed the scoring system But tennis is set in its ways and doesn't see the point Oh, well let's get back to the sensible world You've heard Blaze earlier in this show She's been on a summer camp And Jenny caught up with her to find out what went on Well, hi Blaze What was the name of the youth camp you went to On this summer for five days? Um, it was called Satellites Hmm, I hope that was an appropriate name Now what sort of ages was it for? Where did all the young people come from? Um, they were mostly around, um They mostly came from the UK or EU Some came from very far parts of the world And the age range from like 13 to I think 21 Uh-huh Now what was the camp set up? Your sort of sleeping and eating arrangements And places you met? Um, well since there wasn't like many of us We just had, um, a fairly large tent Where like the chairs and stuff would be Along with the cooker and stuff Um, and places we would meet Like everyone from the whole camp We would normally meet at mainly things at Um, 7am, um, not 7am 11am and 7pm But there was plenty of stuff to do in between What sort of stuff did you do in between? Um, well there were some craft Craft activities, talks to listen to And just, um, some sports stuff as well Oh, that's nice Now, um, you said there weren't many of you What you mean is the group that you went with Obviously there were a lot of others, huh? Yeah Now who did you go with from Kynsham? Um, I went with the St John's youth group Yeah, and who was with you from there? Um, well for the leaders it was like the main two Trevor and Pip And then like we also had two of the Young people who came with me Who were Sarah and Esther That's nice Now what did you do each day? Was there any sort of pattern to the days? Well, I mean, over the week we did end up Forming a form of schedule Getting up around 8am to 8.30am for breakfast And then there was the morning activities Which started at 9am And then go to, I think, half past ten And then most people go to the 11am morning service Uh-huh Then we would eat Because by the time it finished It would be, I think, half past twelve Yeah And then in between the evening service Like from one to five there were evening activities And obviously around like half past five People would go to have dinner at the tents Or the food trucks And then after the main service It would be about eleven o'clock And there would be night activities And then at midnight it's the curfew And everyone has to go to sleep Yeah, exhausted all of you So there's plenty to do and plenty to eat Now who provided the food for you? What sort of food did you have to eat? And what was your favourite food? Well, the group leaders did most of our cooking Which is easy to prepare stuff But then, like, if people didn't bring their own food You could pay money to eat at the food trucks And favourite food, I don't really know Because I quite liked all of the meals equally Oh, that's good What Bible teaching did you get? Well, we got, there were multiple different things That got talked about Some examples, like one person talked about Does God love LGBT people? And then someone explained, like, the main points of the Bible From each book in 45 minutes And then other people were talking about Like how to be an ambassador for Jesus Or like how to spread the words Like in places like school Oh, that's useful What was the worship like? Well, it was very inclusive Because people didn't really have to stand up Or put their arms up if they really wanted to You could just kind of, like, do what you want And if you're, like, tired You could just sit down and still, like, enjoy yourself And, like, obviously there were more parts That were more, like, dedicatory Is that the word? I don't know More of that stuff And then there were other parts Where, you know, you just got to have a good time And it was kind of like a race Oh, well You obviously used up lots of energy And enjoyed worshipping God Great Whom shall I fear? You crush the enemy Underneath my feet You are my sword and shield No troubles linger still Whom shall I fear? I know who goes before me I know who stands behind The God of angel army Is always by my side The one who reigns forever He is a friend of mine The God of angel army Is always by my side My strength is in your name For you alone can save You will deliver me Yours is the victory Whom shall I fear? Whom shall I fear? Whom shall I fear? I know who goes before me I know who stands behind The God of angel army Is always by my side The one who reigns forever He is a friend of mine The God of angel army Is always by my side And nothing's more than Give me your strength You hold the whole world In your hands I'll hold it on To your promises You are faithful You are faithful You are faithful I know who goes before me I know who stands behind The God of angel army Is always by my side The one who reigns forever He is a friend of mine The God of angel army Is always by my side I know who goes before me I know who stands behind The God of angel army Is always by my side The one who reigns forever He is a friend of mine The God of angel army Is always by my side The God of angel army Is always by my side Now that was Chris Tomlin with God of Angel Armies Now let's have some news headlines Thousands attend Franklin Graham's God Loves You tour London event Hercules star Kevin Sorbo claims he was cancelled by Hollywood for Christian beliefs Catholic couple barred from fostering over LGBT plus views Chaplain encourages students faith is alive at university as Scottish teens get exam results You're listening to Believe Together A purchase together in Caterham and Salford production for KTCR FM 105.8 Now what was the worst part about camp? Something else that you weren't too keen on at camp Now what was that? Things with legs Oh spiders, yes Were there plenty of those? Well I think it's just because we just had like I brought some string lights into the tent and I guess all of the bugs were like Oh cool, this is our house now Oh well, it wasn't my day Now what was the best part of camp? Well I'd say when we would do the main service on a few occasions, mainly the evening ones people were asked to stand up if they had like some stuff going on they would like to be prayed for and the amount of people that stood up was amazing Yeah, and what about for you personally? Well for me personally it was the San Francisco because I had a great time Okay, lovely So what have you taken away from that camp? And I don't mean air beds or pressed flowers Well I feel like I've taken away like a a stronger belief in Jesus and well a higher self-esteem overall and also far too much stuff I brought from the gift shop Now do you think it might be worth your while going to it again next year? And would you recommend it to others in the youth group and in fact to any other youngsters? Absolutely, it's very fun even if you don't really even if you're not a Christian it's just fun to go to because obviously there's other activities that aren't all you know religious related stuff So you could take anyone with you and have some fun, that's great Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping you to go on and enjoy the camp? Well I would have to thank everyone that everyone was there because like Esther and her mum for like you know giving me a lift and letting me go in the tent Sarah for me just encouraging me to have fun almost acting like an old sister Pit for organising the thing in general and just helping us have a good time and Trevor for doing part of the cooking Pit did other parts and also his very funny he hates the colour pink He hates the colour pink? Yes and there were these in the building where there was like mains, places to charge your stuff the little charging thing with lights on them and whenever Trevor was around we would always make sure the light would be pink I don't know Anyway it sounds like you had a great time there Blaise Well done, thanks for letting us know all about it Bye Bye Now as we were looking into the history of the Greek Orthodox Church and well actually all the Eastern Orthodox Churches I thought it would be interesting to find some of their hymns and Christian songs and play them but I've been looking and looking and no wonder I've not been successful because what I did eventually find out is that during all their services they basically sing everything they sing their prayers they sing everything that's going on lots of chanting that's just the way it's been for these thousands of years and they don't really sing hymns and songs as such in the services but I did find somebody who said they do sing things like we might sing in sort of just fellowship times when they get together outside of the church they do sing our Christmas carols for instance so that's quite interesting but I thought we'd better play at least a snippet of what they do have in their services they have very set pieces that take place in all sorts of services under their liturgy so let's listen to some maybe you will find that relaxing and help you to worship God Christ is risen from the dead and has risen from the dead to save all that are in need Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia and now if you'd like to contact us in the team through phone, text message or whatsapp please use Peter's number which is 07879 402 114 that's 07879 402 114 if you want to message us through Facebook please search up Believe Together Radio now if you want to listen to the shows live they are on Wednesdays from 4 to 5pm and then repeated on Sundays 8 to 9am on KTCR FM Radio 105.8 FM or DAB Plus or www.ktcrfm.com then you can listen again anytime for the next two weeks at www.ktcrfm.com slash listen dash again you can search up on your favourite podcast site for Believe Together for the playlist, this week's news and useful contact info please go to our Facebook which is Believe Together Radio and now let's find out the answers over to Celia So how did you do with the quiz called Who Lives Where? Now the beloved scatty TV character at 10 Acre Field was of course Wurzel Gummidge together with his friend Aunt Sally and I once went to her fancy dress as Aunt Sally quite a few years ago and who lived, worked and murdered people at 186 Fleet Street? That was Sweeney Todd in his barber shop and the person living at 41 Nelson Mandela House was of course Del Boy Trotter from Only Fools and Horses which is brilliantly played by David Jason or should I say Sir David Jason because he was knighted in 2005 for services to comedy So we just have time to say goodbye until next week It's time for the blessing now Lord Jesus give us the wisdom to understand your will for each day and the grace to respond in order that we may receive your blessings Amen This world is not my home I'm just passing through Treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue The angels beckon me from heaven's open door And I can't feel at home in this world anymore Oh Lord you know I have no friends like you If heaven's not my home then Lord what will I do? The angels beckon me from heaven's open door And I can't feel at home in this world anymore Oh Lord you know I have no friends like you If heaven's not my home then Lord what will I do? The angels beckon me from heaven's open door And I can't feel at home in this world anymore
