Welcome to Believe Together, a Churches Together in Kingcham Salt Lake production for KTCRFM 105.8 and online. O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all of us command. We flock to thee, O Canada, true north strong and free. From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. Thank you for joining in this special show this week. It's Peter here with you and we have a theme for the week introduced by O Canada. That was K.W. Glee, an award-winning youth choir from Canada, which you might now begin to have guessed our theme. So, first of all, many thanks to K.W. Glee, that choir, for permission to use this song in this show. Hello, yes, I'm Jenny back with you again. This sounds interesting. I wonder what's coming up next. This week we've got a new quiz maker. We've got Mark joining us with some quiz questions and the answers, I'm glad to say as well. Mark is not new to this show. He's been listening to it for some year or so on off, I think, by downloading the podcast, which is available to anybody in the world. Thank you very much, Peter. I very much appreciate being a part of Believe Together. Yes, I have been listening, actually, for a number of years and I download the podcast every week. I've been very much enjoying the program and listening to everybody. As you know, recently I moved to another part of Canada and what was really exciting for me was that I downloaded a few episodes before I left and I listened to them along my journey to Western Canada. I very much appreciated having the program available to me. Anyway, yes, I was born and raised in Canada and I've lived here pretty much most of my life. I've also been to the United Kingdom and that area where you live is not unknown to me. I've been to Bristol, I've been to Bath, I've been all over the United Kingdom a number of times in my past. Anyway, once again, I'm very appreciative of being part of the team. Thanks for inviting me. We were just thinking just now that we actually met up with you, but it was a long while ago. It was in 1997 that we came and visited you in Canada. George came with us, didn't you, George? That's right. For me, it was one of my first trips internationally. I was a little bit younger then than I am now. A very much enjoyable trip. Yes, we enjoyed that trip and we met lots of very interesting people, including Mark. And now it's time for this week's quiz. Today's quiz is on a subject that is near and dear to my heart and one that I'm very familiar with. My home country of Canada. Now, don't be too uneasy thinking that the questions are something you may know little about and could not possibly answer. I've made these questions quite easy. Now, some of you may know the answers straight away. If not, here's a tip. If you don't tell Peter and Jenny, then I won't tell them that you have my permission to look up the answers on the Internet while the program is playing. Also, while you are pondering the questions and answers, keep in mind that although Canada is an independent nation, it continues to be a part of the British Commonwealth and therefore much of today's Canadian culture is rooted in British culture. With that, here's today's first question. Question number one, what is Canada's capital city? Is it A. Toronto, Ontario B. Ottawa, Ontario C. Regina, Saskatchewan D. Mount Royal, Quebec or E. London, Ontario Stay tuned. I'll be back with question number two a little later. Thank you very much, Mark. Now, today we're going to play three classic hymns which glorify God and happen to have a Canadian connection. The first one of these is What a Friend We Have in Jesus, which we often play on Believe Together. And this is a country version coming up. But why? Well, these well-known lyrics were written by a man called Joseph Mendicott Scriven. He was born in Ireland, but he emigrated to Canada in 1845. He was familiar with sorrow. He had a fiancée in Ireland who died the night before they were to be married. After moving to Port Hope, Ontario, he became engaged again. But this fiancée fell ill from pneumonia and she also died. He then devoted the rest of his life to tutoring, preaching and helping others. The lyrics of this song are simple, but carry an important message, don't they? Carry everything to God in prayer. What a friend we have in Jesus All our sins and griefs to bear What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer Oh, what peace we often forfeit Oh, what needless pains we bear All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer Happy trials and temptations Is there trouble everywhere? We should never be disturbed Take it to the Lord in prayer Can we find a friend so faithful Who all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness Take it to the Lord in prayer Are we weak and heavy laden? Comfort with a load of care Precious Saviour, still our refuge Take it to the Lord in prayer Do thy friends despise forsaken you? Take it to the Lord in prayer In His arms He'll take and shield me And I will find a solace there Now, here are a few local whatsons. Hmm, well, this one isn't local, but hey. Now, I wonder if you watched the BBC One Gospel Choir of the Year on Songs of Praise on Sunday. Well, I did get round to watching it later on and fantastic as usual. So, if you didn't watch it, why not go and find it? Right, now, One Church Kynsham have put an advert up on Facebook that says this, Good morning, Kynsham. We are so excited to invite you to join us for a free breakfast next Sunday, the 21st of January at 9.45am in the IKB building, which is on the Wellsway School Campus Bath Road entrance. Crèche facilities also available. We'd love to see you. If you wanted to hang around afterwards, our usual One Church kids programme and Sunday service is running from 10.30am. That sounds good. Now, churches together in Kynsham and Salford, of course, that's what this Believe Together show is all about, on their behalf. There's a week of prayer for Christian unity from the 18th to 25th of January. So, by the time you listen to this, we'll be well into it at least, it may even be over. And there is a day of prayer on the 20th of January. I wonder if you managed to join in that. Also, we mentioned last week about everybody in the nation saying the Lord's Prayer all at the same time last Friday. I wonder if you joined in then. I actually did, so that was good. There'll be more about prayer next week. Now, we have a message from June, the Secretary of Churches Together. A very Happy New Year to you all. May it be filled with love, joy, hope and peace for you and all those you love and care for. We would like to welcome you to attend the Churches Together 5th Sunday service to be held on Sunday the 28th of January at St Francis Church, Warwick Road, Keynesham at 6pm. Churches Together 5th Sunday services embrace the different traditions of the local churches and this will be a wonderful opportunity to experience a very traditional and beautiful service. We look forward to welcoming you. Lovely. Now, do you ever listen to our local 24-7 radio station KTCR FM, either actually on the radio or else on the internet? Well, you're obviously listening somehow to at least one of their shows, Believe Together, right now. This is currently being produced on behalf of Churches Together in Keynesham and Salford by me and Peter each week. Of course, with the help of contributors. Would you like to come and find out more about Believe Together and have some fun at the same time? Peter and I have been given the opportunity by Keynesham Eden Church to go along to their monthly cafe church on Sunday the 4th of February at 5pm to share something of our experiences with Believe Together and anything else for some of the hour or so there. But there will be other things going on including things for the children to do. Of course, you can't just come along and sit in the warm if you don't want to do anything. All ages are very welcome. If 5-6.30pm is your tea time I'm sure you could bring along some of your own refreshments to eat alongside the free refreshments offered on tap throughout the evening. So please do come along to say hi to us even if it's a cold, dark evening. We'd love to meet you. The Eden Church, in case you don't know is at the end of Balmoral Road in Keynesham which is a cul-de-sac there just off of Park Road behind St Clement's Road. Hope to see you there. So, can you put it in your diary now? That's Sunday the 4th of February from 5pm at the Keynesham Elam Church. And now, for the Thought for the Week from the Keynesham Talking newspaper. Trevor Stubbs here. Welcome again in gloomy January. Time to remind ourselves of the light of God in the darkness. Some of you listening to this will know all about darkness and you will also know that that darkness need not get in the way of God's love. Last week we thought about the Feast of Epiphany when Jesus was revealed to the Magi from the East. This time it's the turn of the Baptism of the Lord. There is an introduction to the Season of Epiphany which goes Three wonders mark this holy day. Each wonder is about God in man made manifest as the hymn goes. This means God is revealed through what we see in the human Jesus. In the first wonder the Magi proclaim him a king with their gifts. Something which thoroughly got up King Herod's nose. Even the Gentiles apparently recognise that this is someone sent from God. Now, in the second wonder Jesus is baptised in the river Jordan and a voice from heaven declares This is my son, the beloved with whom I am well pleased. Jesus is proclaimed, revealed, Son of God. When Jesus arrived at the Jordan he looked like any other man around 30. He was a trained carpenter and pretty clued up on the Bible but was not someone who stood out from the crowd like King Herod would have done. Up until that time he didn't go around making a fuss but when he is baptised along with all the others in the queue God reveals him. We do not know how many people understood what was going on but John the Baptist did. Through this human being God was about to change the world. Just before he finally ascended Jesus told us to baptise people in his name. In fact, in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. We no longer get baptised simply to repent, seeking a fresh start as those people queuing at the Jordan were doing but to begin a new life an eternal life with him. God is revealing every one of us to be his sons and daughters something he has created us to be from the beginning. So if you want to be cheered on a cold frosty gloomy January morning just remember that we have our home in God and he in us. And if you haven't asked the Holy Spirit into your hearts and minds remember we don't have to wait until we are baptised or confirmed. Cornelius didn't. You can read his story in Acts chapter 10. May God bless your week. I look forward to next week when it's all about a wedding. To break all pressures To set the captive free To take away transgressions And rule in equity He comes with suckers needy The those who suffer wrong To help the poor and needy And bid the weak be strong To give them songs for sight Let darkness turn to light Whose souls contend and die Were precious in his sight He shall come down like showers Upon the fruitful earth And love, joy, hope like flowers Spring in his path to birth Before him on the mountain Shall peace the heralds pour And righteousness in fountains From hill to valley flow Guitar solo Kings shall fall down before him And gold and incense bring All nations shall adore him His praise all people sing To him shall praise I sing As daily vows ascend His kingdom still increasing A kingdom without end For every poor and victorious He offers, his throne shall rest From age to age for glorious All blessing and all blessing The tide of time shall never His kindness come His name shall stand forever That name to us is love Thank you again to Trevor and to the New Scottish Hymns Band for that Hail to the Lord's Anointed Now, let's hear from Mark again Okay, at the moment I'm living in an area called Pembina Valley and it's an area that is in the south part of the province of Manitoba Manitoba is one of three of Canada's prairie provinces and it hugs the province of Ontario where I just moved from in November So, and I am in the far south part of the province and you are correct I'm only about a 30 minute drive from the US border Now, you were telling me that the place that you're living in has a population of about 25,000, was it? Well, the sort of general area of Pembina Valley takes in probably about 15 or 18 communities The smallest community right at the US border is about 300 people and the largest community is only about 10 kilometers from me called Winkler, Manitoba and it has a population of about 17,000 Now, I'm currently living in a place just west of Winkler called Morden and it has a population of about 5,000 And we have to put that into context in the sense of Keynesian where we are here The last I heard a spring account was about 25,000 but new houses are springing up all around the town all the time So, it's probably gone up a bit since then So, your area, population-wise is probably not much bigger than our area or population around in Keynesian You were telling me something very interesting about the local churches and of course, Believe Together is a program that talks about what local churches are doing and what's going on and you were saying you've got a few churches around How many would you estimate at the moment in the community? Yes, Peter, I started researching moving over here about seven or eight years ago and I was astounded to find out how many Christian churches existed in this area The city of Winkler, the place I said was just next door about 10 kilometers there are about 35 Christian churches and they're all sizes from no more than about 100 people up to, I believe the largest is the one that I attend called Gospel Mission Church or we just call it GMC and they have a current role of about 3,000 congregants We do three services on a Sunday in order to get everybody in and we also do live streaming similar to your local church So, that is just the city of Winkler but now here in Morgan, where I'm currently residing I estimate that there's about 15 churches now think about that there's only 5,000 people that live here and yet there's 15 Christian churches but when you take in the whole area of Pembina Valley I estimate that there's somewhere in the order of about 100 Christian churches Wow, yeah, for a similar population to the Canesham area Yes, so, why? Why are there so many Christian churches in your area? We'll come back to Mark and see what he's got to say about that very important question but that will be just after our news headlines a bit later And now, the second question for the Just for Fun quiz So, how are you getting along with the first question? Well, here's the second What is Canada's national sports? Is it A. Hockey B. Soccer or as you would know it, football C. Curling D. Skiing or E. Lacrosse And I'll return shortly with one more question about Canada One of our good friends, David Bisington produces a very different show on this radio station Let's hear him tell you all about it Hi, I'm Dave Bisington and it's my pleasure to present the Country Hour on KTCR 105.8 FM You will hear classic country hits, old and new plus news on local clubs and gigs Looking forward to spending this hour with you Until then, keep it country! Apparently it took 50 or 60 years and all of these Mennonites who migrated here were able to fix all of these issues and now you've got some of the best farmland in Canada especially for growing grain crops and so there were many many Mennonites came here over the years At the end of the Second World War even before the end of the Second World War more Mennonites migrated from Germany and this is one of the places they came so over a period of probably 120 or 130 years we've had a lot of Russian and German Mennonites have come into this area and settled and you can see it when you walk around there's a lot of them still wearing the kind of dress that they would have worn over 100 years ago or very similar Wow And so there are a lot of Mennonites a lot of Christians here many many probably we're now at probably four generations if not five in this area so I kind of think maybe that has contributed to the number of churches that exist in this area And now time for the final question for the Just Fun Quiz What is Canada's national anthem? Is it A. God Save the Queen B. The Star Spangled Banner C. Jean Dupuy A. or D. O Canada Stay tuned, I'll be back shortly with the answers to today's quiz questions Now our third hint today with a Canadian connection is this one So Sendai You sung here by Faith LL07 Apparently these lyrics were written by Margaret Clarkson who was born in Melville, Saskatchewan She lived and worked in Ontario most of her life dying in 2008 So it's not a very old one is it really? Her inspiration for the song comes from John 20, 21 where it says As the Father has sent me so send I you And this is a favourite hymn still amongst missionaries everywhere So send I you To toil for me So send I you To find the lost and broken Or wandering souls Who work day and night To build a home So send I you To suffer for my sake So send I you To loneliness and want With heart of hungry For the loved and known Forsaken home and kindred Friend and dear one So send I you To know my love alone So send I you To leave your life's ambition To die to dear desire Self will resign To labour long And love where men revile you So send I you To lose your life in mine So send I you To hearts made hard by hatred To eyes made blind Because they will not see To spend the weary blood To spend and spend on So send I you To taste of calvary So send I you By grace made strong to try on For most of all My darkness death and sin My name to spare And in that name to conquer So send I you My victory to win So send I you To take the souls in bondage The word of truth That sets the captives free To break the bonds of sin To loose their spanners So send I you To bring the lost to me So send I you To bear my cross with patience And then one day With joy to lay it down To hear my voice The God my faithful servant Come share my throne My kingdom and my throne And the glory and majesty So send I you Now let's just pop back to Mark again for his last thoughts about that particular part of Canada So we might perhaps call this a sort of Bible Belt of Canada Is that reasonable? I would say based on my experience of living in different parts of Canada in the past that this is one of the Bible Belt We have no one single Bible Belt There is certainly a Bible Belt around Toronto There is another one in Alberta I lived in Calgary at one time and there are a lot of Christians and various Christian schools in that area as well as a couple of areas in British Columbia would be considered Bible Belt but this is certainly one of them Hey Peter Yes What does Canada produce that no other country in the world produces? I have no idea Canadians Oh You are listening to Believe Together The church is together in Caterham and Salford Production for KTCR FM 105.8 and online Now here is my diary verse for the week It comes from Psalm 121 The Lord will keep you from all harm He will watch over your life The Lord will watch over your coming and going Both now and forever more I lift my eyes and see I need not be afraid All my help comes from the Lord Who the earth and sky has made He will keep you from all evil Behind you as before He will sustain you through this journey From now and evermore The Lord will never sleep My steps He has ordained For the one who holds the night Is the sovereign of my day He will keep you from all evil Behind you as before He will sustain you through this journey From now and evermore He will keep you from all evil Behind you as before He will sustain you through this journey From now and evermore He will keep you from all evil Behind you as before He will sustain you through this journey From now and evermore That version of He Will Keep You is from Sovereign Grace Music And now, let's find out the answers Thank you. For the first quiz question, What is Canada's capital city? There are five choices. While Toronto is Canada's largest city, it is not the capital. It is, however, the capital city of the province of Ontario. The western city of Regina, Saskatchewan, is home to the training grounds of the world-famous Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Ride. One might think it to be the capital because the word Regina, or Regina, which means Queen in Latin, was used as part of the signature of the late Queen Elizabeth II. Interestingly enough, King Charles III has adopted it. Regina, however, is also not Canada's capital. Mount Royal, Quebec, is not a city, but both a mountain and town on the island of Montreal and is completely surrounded by the city of Montreal. And, just to throw you off a little, I included the city of London, Ontario. Even though this western Ontario city was named for England's capital, it is not Canada's capital. So, give yourself a start if you chose Ottawa, Ontario. This modern city is located in eastern Ontario and overlooks the Ottawa River and is not only the federal seat of government, but is also the home to Canada's Governor General, who is Canada's official representative of the King of England. Our second question is, what is Canada's national sports? And there were five possibilities. If you were listening closely, you would have heard me say sports, which is the plural of sport. And a subtle hint to the answer. One of the five options is football, or as we call it in Canada, soccer. While it is very popular with youth teams and virtually anyone that has immigrated from Europe or South America, it is not the national sport. One might think Canada's sport is curling because it is played entirely on ice. It is very popular with even the smallest towns having a dedicated indoor curling rink that allows the game to be played year-round. Canada's national curling teams have won many international tournaments. However, it is not considered Canada's national sport. Yet another popular sport for Canadians and international visitors alike is skiing. Most skiing is in the Rocky Mountains of Western Canada at Banff, Alberta, near Vancouver, British Columbia, and in the east in Quebec's Gatineau Mountains. In 1988, Calgary, Alberta, hosted the Winter Olympics. World-class skiers still come here to practice and compete at the various venues around the city. Even so, skiing is not Canada's national sport. Give yourself another star if you chose hockey or lacrosse. Again, the question is, what is Canada's national sports? Plural, in 1994, by an act of the Canadian Parliament, hockey was enshrined as Canada's national winter sport, while lacrosse was named the national summer sport. Lacrosse is a sport that few know about, including many Canadians. It originated with the Aboriginal, or Canadian Indian, and was introduced by them to the early New World settlers in the mid-1600s. The game is not unlike hockey, although it is not played on ice. There is a net at each end of the arena that is guarded by a goalie. The players each carry sticks that have a netting on the end, and they throw and catch a ball in the net of each other's sticks. The sticks are held high, and each team must try to score by throwing the ball into the opposing team's net. There is a national men's lacrosse team that competes at events around the world, and every community has at least one lacrosse team that competes with other community teams. If you chose both hockey and lacrosse, award yourself two stars, and stand up and take a bow. You are an expert in Canadian sports culture. The last question was a giveaway, but first, let's look at the other answers to What is Canada's National Anthem? One of the answers was The Star-Spangled Banner. This is the well-known national anthem of the United States of America that refers to its national flag, the Stars and Stripes. Jean Dupuy is not a national anthem, however, it is known as the unofficial anthem for the province of Quebec. You might have thought that because Canada is part of the British Commonwealth, its anthem is God Save the King. Canada is one of many British Commonwealth countries that have adopted their own unique national anthem. As part of Canada's 1967 centennial celebrations to commemorate it becoming a sovereign nation 100 years earlier, the government introduced a new anthem, O Canada. You heard it at the beginning of today's program, and the title is in the opening line. Yes, we were a bit sneaky and inserted the answer to this quiz question at the top of the program. My name is Mark Robinson from Manitoba, Canada. Until next time, God's blessings on each of you that listen, and be assured that God loves you and we at Believe Together love you. We'll come back to Mark just before the end of this show. Now, in this week of Christian unity, let's look back at one of the old choruses, simply sung here for us by Divine Hymns. We are one in the Spirit We are one in the Lord We are one in the Spirit We are one in the Lord And we pray that all unity May one day be restored And oh, we are christened by our Lord By our Lord And oh, we are christened by our Lord We will walk with each other We will walk hand in hand We will walk with each other We will walk hand in hand And together we'll straddle To the darkness in our land And oh, we are christened by our Lord By our Lord And oh, we are christened by our Lord We will walk with each other We will walk side by side We will walk with each other We will walk side by side And we'll die each day To save each other And oh, we are christened by our Lord By our Lord And oh, we are christened by our Lord I reckon we all need that simple reminder, quite often actually, that loving one another is the heart of our Christian unity and that's worldwide. Everywhere. Including Keynesham. Now, we have had a quiz for Mark this week. In fact, he's not just given us a quiz. He's given us enough extra material to make a whole special show relating to Canada. Thank you very much, Mark. But please, we want quizzes. We want people to send us in quiz questions. We want you, please, to try to think of a few questions related to something that interests you. You don't have to give us lots of extra stuff like Mark has done this week. That's been great. But remember last week, David gave us some questions about Cadbury's Fry's factory in Keynesham and the station and the trains in the area. That was excellent and very welcome. We can just have a few simple questions and the answers, please. And that's what we need. At this moment of recording, we have no quiz ready for next week. Maybe you could provide it for us. That would be very welcome. Thank you very much indeed. And please, may I make another invitation and request? We've had no dedicated music this week. No birthdays or anniversaries to celebrate. Come on. Surely we've got some more between us, all of us listeners and people. Come on, send us in your requests. Who would you like to celebrate and have their name mentioned and be greeted in belief together? We're looking forward to hearing from you. To play us out today from this show, we have another song for Christian Unity Week. This is One People by Philippa Hanna. But before then, it just remains for us to say goodbye. Bye. And back over to Mark. I don't know whether one day we might be able to come out and meet you again somewhere in Canada. Thank you very much, Peter. And actually, I'm going to reverse it on you and say that it's been over 40 years since I've been to the UK. So I think maybe the next time around, it's time for me to come there and maybe you can interview me in your studio in Cajun. Thanks again. God bless you to everybody. Thank you very much, Mark. We look forward to it. Well, it's time to say goodbye with our blessings now. Lord God, help us to remember that all things come from you and that you have a plan for each of our lives. And we thank you for all of your mighty blessings. In Jesus' name. Amen. The Father The Son The Spirit Three in one Our firm foundation The cornerstone We stand together As one people under God Bring us closer to your heart Bring us back to where we started As we gather at the cross Remind us who we are One people under God As we stand in one cross All will confess that you are Lord Our precious Savior You paid it all We give you glory as one people under God Bring us closer to your heart Bring us back to where we started As we gather at the cross Remind us who we are One people under God For where there's unity There is blessing Bring revival Bring revival And you will find a bride Ready for a king Let your church arise For where there's unity There is blessing Send revival Bring revival And you will find a bride Ready for a king Let your church arise Jesus Let your church arise Bring us closer to your heart Bring us back to where we started As we gather at the cross Remind us who we are One people under God That's what we are And we'll see your kingdom come As we praise your name forever Till the day that you return Lord that you will be done One people under God We'll see your kingdom come Lord that you will be done Till the day that you return Lord that you will be done One people under God One people under God
