This is episode one of 2023 Wrapped and today we are discussing the movies of 2023. I'm Kara Van Boris here with Alex Herber, Alayna Lachis. We are going to be discussing and rating each movie of 2023 then ranking our top three favorites of 2023. Okay, I think 2023 had some of the best movies personally. I agree, I mean over COVID we didn't get much so this year was like coming back from COVID. It like really proved how good movies can be. Like Barbie at the beginning. Barbie, yeah that's a good start. Summer. Barbie was definitely the movie of the summer in my opinion. Yeah. I can't really think of anything else that like tops it because I don't know it was just like on like social media and stuff. Yeah. A whole big thing I think of the summer was really fun like everyone like wearing like pink to the yeah yeah like it had an impact on people yeah impact on people and I just feel like I forget what I was gonna say. Hold on I was gonna say something. No end it. I flagged it. I was gonna say something but I forget. I could never be on a podcast because of this. The moral of the story was very good. Yeah and it just like I don't know it just brought back memories from when I would play with dolls and stuff. Yeah I get what you mean. You know and I don't know I was just very attached to it and I think they like marketed it really well just everywhere. Yeah and it's really fun. Like at the end of the movie was like kind of tear jerking. Like for some yeah but it was very controversial because like I went to the I went to watch it with my brother and my dad and my mom like my whole family was there and my brother and dad were just sitting there like yeah and I just looked at them and like aren't you so moved by this and they were like I just want to leave right now like no like this is this movie's like girls yeah also a lot of people like my parents didn't understand like the jokes like the jokes weren't funny but they were meant to be awkward that it was funny. Okay personally everybody loved Will Ferrell in it. Yeah he was good. I didn't like him that much in it to be honest. Really? I don't think he was that good. So what would you guys rank it out of five stars? What would you give it? I would honestly give it like a four honestly. I think I would give it like 3.5. Yeah I was gonna say maybe a 3.5. Okay so how about Elvis because I know that Elvis is one of my favorite movies this year. When did it come out? I didn't watch it but I heard a lot of the things. It came out in May so that was like kind of earlier in the year it was I thought it was really good I like those types of movies with like the bands and singers and just like I like to see like how they like it was definitely like a longer show like Oppenheimer like it was definitely one of the longest ones of the year but it was really entertaining all the way through and I also like didn't know much about all this. Yeah I think Oliver Butler did a really good job. Yeah oh my god yeah. Yeah did you see like after like his voice was like yeah how much like he literally turned himself into Elvis for like yeah it was like cool to see how much he like dedicated himself to the role. He he did great like he looked he like I saw him and thought Elvis I was just like that's Elvis. Yeah I think because of that that this is like my five star movie of the year. Really? What would you guys rate it? I would give it like a 4.5. I don't think I'd go five. I didn't watch it so I can't rank it but I heard a lot of good things about it. Yeah also with Elvis kind of comes Priscilla because oh Priscilla Presley um I don't know I just I I find it crazy that that they made Elvis and Priscilla in the same year. Priscilla came out in October and because in the Elvis movie we didn't really see Priscilla's side and Priscilla I guess she just Elvis was not really great to her and I didn't know how big the age gap was. They were like 10 years age difference. Yeah he like controlled her. So none of us personally watched the movie but I think it definitely is a movie that I would want to go and see. Yeah yeah I definitely find it really interesting how they came out in the same year though. I yeah I don't know if I liked Jacob Elordi playing Elvis in that though. Like it should have been a part two like Austin Butler playing again. I guess we'll just have to watch. Yeah I guess we'll just have to compare Austin Butler and um Jacob Elordi to see who's better. Okay so speaking of Jacob Elordi how do we all feel about Saltburn? Anyways. Anyways. You keep switching so fast. We're talking and we keep switching. I'm trying to see a lot of movies to get through. Yeah we're almost there actually. Okay anyways now let's talk Oppenheimer. We kind of already discussed it with Barbie because they came out literally the same day which is kind of crazy to me. I think those were the first movies that came out after the writer's strike. I might be wrong but those were like pretty much the first big movies and I don't know I think they proved it pretty good that we were missing out during that whole time. But I I was the only one to see Oppenheimer and all I can say was that it was very long. I think that like like the idea behind it is interesting but not enough for me to like give it a good ranking. Yeah like I saw that like everything about it like the trailer and stuff and it did seem interesting it was just never something that I got myself to go and see so. I think you have to be very interested in like history to go watch that. Yeah you have to kind of be like able to sit there for what two and a half hours and actually like comprehend what's going on. Yeah I feel like it's one of those movies where you have to like go in watch it once but then watch it again. You have to watch it again yeah. There's like a lot of movies like that where I just have to watch it like four times to actually understand the concept. Yeah but a lot of people said it was good I don't know. Yeah people found it really interesting I think that was like funny too because like people were either going to see Barbie or they were going to see Oppenheimer. Or they would go to both and wear like a pink suit. Yeah and they're just like so different so. Yeah I think it was kind of funny that it came out the same day. Okay next let's talk about the Eros tour like movie. I don't know if this really is considered like a movie but it was in theaters. It was literally just like. It was a concert. A concert. It was not even a documentary. It was like the craziest thing I've ever seen like I don't think there's ever there's ever been anything like that in box office like. Yeah like that type of stuff could come out like on YouTube or stuff but like you've never seen people go to a theater dress for a concert. Oh yeah like people actually dress up. Yeah. Beyonce did one too. Beyonce did one too. Beyonce. I did too. Yeah but it wasn't as popular of her tour but it wasn't as popular. Yeah like this one people were they were. I feel like it completely changed like movie watching culture you know what I mean because normally you like go out and you like sit down and like personally when I went there were girls like standing like running at the front like screaming like using flashlights and like it was all like fun and stuff. Or like certain things from the concert where you like hold it up. Oh yeah like the little concert thingies. Yeah like we did all of those when we went. Yeah. And we were all standing and singing the whole time so. Yeah it was fun. It was it was definitely an experience but it's not I don't think we could rank it with the movies because it's like. Yeah. It's just like a. It was its own thing. It's a concert it's like its own separate category. I definitely think that and Barbie were some of like the most popular things this year though. That's true. Yeah but it's like I don't know if I can consider it a movie. Yeah me neither. Like the Eros tour in general was like popular so it kind of just. Eros. What did I say? Eros. I always say that. Okay whatever. Um next. Leave that in because that's like. No I will. Wait should we talk about anyone but you or Willy Wonka next? Yeah. Okay next. Okay yeah we'll do that last. Well we have the Hunger Games too. Anyways next we should talk about Willy Wonka. The musical. Yeah. I didn't watch that but I heard. I haven't watched it. I'm too. I don't know. No I was like the only person that went and I like really wanted to go and see it and I actually thought it was really good. That's crazy. You know what I mean? Like I know people this year like haven't really liked the whole idea of like musicals especially with like Mean Girls coming out. Like there's a lot of like controversy about people remaking movies because we saw that this year. Yeah. And I think like if you go. If you went into the movie like expecting it to be different and like expecting the musical and just like appreciating it as its own thing. I think you would really enjoy it. That's why it's all about Mean Girls too. Yeah I feel like Mean Girls. The musical was. Yeah when did that come out? That came out like last week. Like last week. I was gonna put it in this but we couldn't discuss it because it came out like a week after 2023. But yeah the musical part of it can't say was my favorite and I feel like I'll feel the same way about Wonka if I go to see it. But I think I've seen trailers and stuff. I can just feel that Timothee Chalamet did like a really good job playing Wonka. He did. Like it was so like whimsical. It definitely like felt like it was like in another world. Hello when she was in a different world. No. She was in Wonka. Like the set and everything is really impressive. That's what I'm. Okay. No yeah. No that makes sense. Yeah. Like I can just imagine. I kind of. It gives the vibes of Alice in Wonderland. You guys. You know the original Wonka. That whole like candy factory. Is it like that? Because that candy factory. Of course. Oh I've seen it. No spoilers guys. Sorry guys. Okay. But the old Wonka movie I remember when I watched as a kid I was like so shocked at how every candy was in there. I just wanted to be there. Yeah. And eat all the candy. Wait what would you rate it? Yeah. I think I would rate it like a 3.5. I thought it was pretty good. Okay. Yeah. I don't know how many times I would watch that. I would probably maybe watch it like once a day. Yeah that might be. That's like mean world. Like I'm glad I watched it but never again. Okay. Next let's discuss the Hungarians Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes that came out in November. So this is obviously a sequel to the or a prequel. It's a prequel. A prequel because it's like. It came out. It's supposed to be set before. Yeah and there's a book for this too. I actually have it but I didn't read it because it was long. It looks really good. I really want to watch. I still haven't gone and watched it. I know me too. I'm so surprised we haven't gotten to see it. Yeah. I think it was really good. Oh yeah you go. What? Did you want to elaborate on why you thought it was good? No I didn't actually go but let's just pretend I went because I really need to. Anyways um I think that was one of the top movies of 2023 because the Hunger Games like those were those were so popular when they came out. Like those were the movies of the year when like they came out and this one it just I've heard it's got a good thing like like a good like it's got a good idea to it but it also like brings you back to when those old movies were out. Yeah. And we've seen like videos of like Jennifer Lawrence and like what's his name? Josh Hutcherson. Like they've like talked about oh like they gotta see it and stuff and how they're excited to watch it. It's just like cool to see how like all of them kind of come back together. I think they did a good job with casting too. Yeah. I think I agree. Presence now. Yeah. Still lamp on top. I know that actually got like so much like attention. No because yeah. Like on social media like that was one of the other ones. The whole presence. Yeah. Broke the whole TikTok. And also like before the movie even like came out. I love my window. I could see so much from here. I could see so much. Okay anyways um before the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes even came out there were so many like edits of like on TikTok of like the old movies. Like everyone since the new one came out everyone was watching like the old ones and like raving over those. So it kind of just like. Yeah a lot of people like either went and watched the new movie and like re-watched all the movies afterwards or watched all the movies before and then watched afterwards. Because it's like you can watch it after or before. It doesn't matter. It works either way. So what would you rate it? I honestly am going five out of five for that one. I really thought it was a good movie. I guess me and Eleni will have to go see it. I know you have to go. Is it still in theaters? Yeah. Oh. Maybe but it's honestly it's going to be on streaming soon. Yeah. So I'm excited for that so I can watch a bunch. Okay last movie and I think we all saved the best for last because no one brought this up but we're all excited to talk about it. Anyone but you. Best movie of 2020. It was so good. It was so good. First of all brought back the rom-com. Yeah it's like it's been a hobby. I haven't seen a good rom-com in so long and that brought it back. Yeah. It was so good. I mean like Glenn Powell and then Sidney Sweeney. Yeah them together. Perfect casting. Yeah perfect casting. And in real life like we've all seen the like interviews and stuff. Yeah like he could be engaged but like Glenn Powell and Sidney Sweeney like they just have something there. There's just chemistry there and I think that like out of screen like chemistry really showed on screen. Yeah you can tell you can tell like they enjoyed playing the roles together. Yeah and they're like really good friends. I think any movie that has like a song in it like unwritten was in it. Oh yeah. That is a popular song. That song. The perfect rom-com because it had like the like scenery. Yeah. Like it was just like a pretty like place. Oh my god yeah. The good music. Oh like I just wanted to be there. Like on TikTok everybody's like oh now my bucket list is Australia. No because I actually like went through and like tried to get my style to be like Sidney Sweeney. Their outfits in that movie were so good. They were really good. I think the Serenity song like was made the movie. No unwritten. Oh yeah yeah. We talked about that but I. No I agree. It reminds me of um Ten Things I Hate About You and like You're So Vain. Like the way those go together and that just like when you hear that song. Yeah. That's me with it. Like I think this will be the next Ten Things I Hate About You. Like that song has been on repeat. No. How to Lose a Guy in Ten Things. Not Ten Things I Hate About You. Not that. That was also a good rom-com. Yes. But it didn't have. It brought like the good old rom-coms back I feel like. I agree. Like I feel like. It was like cute. It was so yeah. It was really nice. Like there were so many times in the movie where I was just like kicking my feet like. Yeah I know. It was so cute. I was like kicking over. It was so cute. I just yeah. Five out of five for me. Yeah five out of five. I know. I think I would give it another five. Like I loved it. And then I remember after the movie we were like. And then it was a rom-com. So yeah. Yeah. So we just watched another rom-com. But it also just like on TikTok how the way they were reposting people's TikToks made people want to post more TikToks. Oh yeah. They interacted with the followers. And the amount of people who I saw who were like is the movie actually good? Are you all just trying to get reposted by Sydney Sweeney? And everyone was like well no it's good but we're also just trying to get reposted by Sydney Sweeney. So everyone just loved it. And then like I don't know I just wanted to be. Now I just want to watch everything that Glenn Powell is in. Yeah. Yeah. He's a really good actor. He is. Like I loved him in Top Gun. And he's in a lot of rom-coms. Yeah. Really? Yeah. He's in a few but I definitely like want to like really watch Top Gun because of him. Yeah. Yeah I love I love Top Gun. Who does he play in Top Gun? Um. Hey Man. Oh okay. I remember. Yeah. Okay. So what is everyone's top three for the year? So yeah we're gonna have we're gonna come together and make our top three and then we'll have like one or two honorable mentions because like how do you choose three? Yeah. We need we need more than three. I mean I think we can all agree what number one is. My number one's Anyone But You. Okay. Me too. Okay. So that's my number one for the year. Anyone But You. Go watch that because it's really good. Um. I love Taylor Swift's Heiress Tour but I think that would be like an honorable mention. Yeah. Honestly yeah because it was a movie. So yeah that would be a good honorable mention. I think I think I think Barbie should be on there somewhere. I don't know. I don't think Barbie's my second. I don't know Barbie's my third. I think Barbie's my third. Yeah. But second I okay I know Ellis would say Lily Wonka but I don't think either of us. I'm putting Elvis. Really? Wow. I think all of us are gonna have different number twos to be honest. Yeah. Because I was gonna go The Hunger Games. I think Lily Wonka gets an honorable mention. I think I think for me I'm going Anyone But You one, Hunger Games two, and then um what is my three? Oh Elvis three probably and then honorable mentions are Barbie and Taylor Swift Heiress Tour. Okay so my number one is Anyone But You. My number two is Elvis. My number three is Barbie and then my honorable mentions are Lily Wonka and the Heiress Tour movie. Okay I feel like I didn't like watch a lot of these but I've heard many good things about them. Yeah. But my first one is definitely Anyone But You. Yeah. And then honestly I think I only watched Anyone But You and Barbie and also Taylor Swift but I don't know. Do you think it's Elvis? No. You should really guess. I've been wanting to watch that though. I just think my top one is actually I don't know I don't think anybody can top like Anyone But You. No yeah that's definitely it. I loved like how like happy I was. Yeah. I didn't watch it again. It sounds crazy but like it makes you smile. Yeah. And that's how a rom-com should be so. Yeah. Creds to whoever made that because it's a really good rom-com. I agree. Okay I don't know how to close this out. Okay that was episode one of 2023 wrapped. Our final rankings well we couldn't really agree so we kind of just have to watch them and decide for yourself. Yeah. Tell us what your rankings are. That's everything for this. Thanks for watching. Thank you Ella and Eleni for joining. Of course. Of course. So fun. Adios Amigos.
