In an instant faith grew, their strength was made new, and God's power had shattered their gloom. Then like fire from the birth, each was filled with God's love, and spoke words they didn't understand. The doors opened wide, the disciples ran outside, and God's presence just flooded the land. People heard of God's love, how he came from above, as a man called Jesus, God's son. How he died for their sins, new life can begin, and the battle of his death had been won. Thousands came to believe, new life to receive, as God's spirit moved in power. The church came to birth, and spread through the earth, and continues right up to this hour. Well I can tell you what some people were doing, some people were being baptised in the sea, at Bognor Regis, that's on the south coast, and I saw this going on on Songs of Praise on Pentecost Sunday afternoon, they were having a fantastic time, and they were sort of based from St Wilfrid's Church in Bognor Regis. Hello, I'm Peter, pleased to be with you this week. Now I hope I've got a few interesting thoughts to share with you this week. In the epilogue this is, I know. Now my wife Jenny presented to you a few thoughts on taste, didn't she, a couple of weeks ago. Jenny and I produced the weekly radio show called Believe Together on the KTCR FM radio station for Kingsham in this part of the country. We're pleased to do that and every week we try to include a Thought for the Week and when we can we include the epilogue from the Talking Newspaper and we're pleased to do that. So this week we're bringing our Thought for the Week to the Talking Newspaper, so it's a privilege to be able to share this with you. Now this time I'm talking about little things, little things. You know, nothing is too small for God to be interested in it. If we're interested in something, then God is interested in it too. Now it's always important for me to remember this. A lot of our things in life are pretty small. They're not that important to anybody else, but they matter to us. And if they matter to us, they matter to God as well. Right, let's have a quick look at what the Bible tells us about this. Well, there was a guy called Elisha, one of the Old Testament prophets. And he was out with some of his friends. He was teaching people how to be prophets, so he had quite a crowd of followers with him. And one day they were working down by the river, cutting down some trees. And one of the guys had a borrowed axe head, which shot off the end of his stick, probably because he hadn't fixed it on properly, and went into the river and sank. And as far as they were concerned, that was the end of it. It had gone. Oh dear, what was he going to do? How could he explain this one? And probably how could he afford to replace it? Because in those days an axe head was a pretty valuable bit of kit. But anyway, he went and told Elisha about it. And Elisha came along and said, OK, right, what can we do about this? Now this is one of the little tiny miracles recorded in the Old Testament like this. Elisha said, give me a stick, a nice sharp stick. So he got a nice sharp stick. He threw it into the river at that point. Now we've got to assume that this was not just a little trickle, this was quite a bit of water here. It was so significant that they couldn't even think about wading in to try and find this axe head. It just wasn't a possibility. But anyway, Elisha throws this stick into the river and somehow the point of the stick finds the axe head and goes into the hole in the axe head. And then floats the axe head up to the surface and they grab it and pull it out of the water. There's a lovely little quote in the Old English translation of the Bible that said that the axe swam out of the water. Well, maybe that's a bit of a funny way of putting it. But the axe head came back and was rescued. Now was that an important issue? Well, it was for that guy. Therefore it was important to God. It's a pastor at a tiny little church. 40 years of loving on the broken and the hurt. These simple moments change the world. Dream small, don't bother a lot, you've got to do it all. Just let Jesus use you where you are, one day at a time. Live well, loving God and others as yourself. Find little ways where only you can help. With His great love, a tiny rock can make a giant fall. Dream small. If visiting the widow down the street or dancing on a Friday with your friend with special needs, these simple moments change the world. Of course, there's nothing wrong with bigger dreams. Just don't dismiss on your way to bigger things, no. These simple moments change the world. So dream small, don't bother a lot, you've got to do it all. This next little story is nothing to do with gardens, but it is about an answer to prayer. Last week, Marilyn rang us up with this little story because she wanted us to tell you, the together all about it to encourage you. So this is what she told us in brief. She said that I think it was that very day, but maybe it was the day before. It was nine o'clock in the morning. She was still up in her bedroom and she fell over. Now being elderly, it's hard to get up and she just could not get up. She was trying everything, rolling around, but she just couldn't do it. Now she does have an emergency button on her, so fortunately she did and she pressed it, but she couldn't hear anybody speaking on the box in reply because the door was shut and the box was downstairs. Anyway, her cry for help had been heard because she pressed that button. Wonderful things, those buttons, aren't they? So she just did not know what to do and her strength kept sapping from her and as I said she was rolling about and then resting. She couldn't see any way to get up. So she was there, I think she said for three hours and then she thought about the bed. Now of course she had been praying. She's a great believer in Jesus and the strength and ideas he gives her. So she kept crying out to Jesus and then she got to the bed and got hold of the sheet, which fortunately must have stayed tucked in on the other side because she kept pulling and pulling on it and she kept crying out for more strength because she just couldn't get up. Then finally she did it. She managed to pull herself up against the sheet on the bed and well we won't go into the rest of the story, but she did it after three hours and she just wanted us to know it was Jesus who helped her. So I hope that story encourages you that prayer works. She could not move. She tried to get to different places in the hospital. I think she ended up in the cafeteria with her head on the table. But she said all sorts of people there were being very kind to her, showing her all sorts of kindnesses. And she thought that was wonderful. And she did manage then to get home. So that's in the May edition of The Keynsham Voice if you want to have a look at it. Now, more locally, on Saturday the 25th of May, from 2 until half past 3 in the afternoon, Winterbourne Wind Band will be in the Keynsham Park at the bandstand, playing on the bandstand. And then the following day, Sunday the 26th, same times, 2 to half past 3 in the afternoon, there'll be Ruby Jazz on the bandstand. Good times there. That sounds good. Now the 29th of May, we have advertised this, that's next Wednesday evening, depending on when you're listening to this, is the Rototo Singers in Bath Abbey. You can still get free tickets from Eventbrite. Now we have something like three buses coming at once. It's very interesting that there are three events here that we found out about to help churches in reaching out to people who perhaps feel excluded. So that's not good, is it? So we maybe could send someone from our church, if we belong to a church, or we could go along ourselves to one of these events. The first one is put on by Just Love Bristol. It's a morning of conversation around inclusion in Christian communities. This one's going to be happening in Victoria Methodist Church, White Ladies Road in Bristol. And it's on Saturday the 8th of June, from half past 9 in the morning until 12.30pm. There'll be various conversations going on, looking at questions like, why do people face barriers to belonging? How can we make our churches safe spaces for those who struggle with their mental or physical health? What do good or bad inclusion efforts look like? Lots of opportunities to discuss these questions in a relaxed, informal environment with refreshments. But you do need a ticket. They're free from Eventbrite. They also say that you can stay afterwards from 12.30pm to 13.30pm. They'll be offering a free soup lunch to continue the conversation. So that sounds great. Now, also on the same day, ah, so you can't go to both, better find someone else to go to one of the others. This time, not from 9.30pm to 12.30pm, but from 9.30pm to 3pm on Saturday the 8th of June, there's a Dementia Action Alzheimer's Awareness thing going on. Dementia Friendly Church Day Conference it is, and it's at Stockwood Free Church, Ladman Road, Stockwood in BS14. This is an opportunity to learn about theology and dementia, develop dementia awareness, consider a carer's perspective, and also bereavement. This is the first time such a conference has been held in South Bristol, and they hope we may be able to send representatives from our churches. But you have to register with them again on Eventbrite. Now, Flourish Framework are hosting a mini-conference type event called Mixed Ecology and All Things on the Edge, a day of conversation. This is on Thursday, a Thursday, 13th of June, from 9.45am in the morning until 4.30pm in the afternoon. So it's quite a long event here. That's going to be at The Haven at Speedwell, Bristol, BS15. It is a day to meet with others and talk about all things on the edges of established church. They've arranged some great speakers from Methodist, the Church of England, and Church Methodist Society.
