The speaker is addressing a group of biologists and explaining that they will be investigating why offspring have similar traits to their parents but not always to each other. They will be using imaginary creature parents to create offspring out of clay and observe the traits they inherit. The instructions from the parents will determine the traits of the offspring, and the offspring will be siblings. The speaker emphasizes that the combination of instructions determines the traits of each creature. Once the creatures are created, they will compare the similarities and variations of their offspring. The speaker concludes by encouraging the group to ask questions and expressing excitement about finding new ideas to answer their research question. Hello my life biologists team. Remember we are investigating the question why do offspring have similar traits to their parents but not always to each other. You're going to see these two creature parents that are imaginary of course. So today you'll be making an offspring of these creatures out of clay and you will make observations of the traits that they inherit from these parents even though the creatures are not real they will help you investigate traits in real organisms. You're all going to receive instructions from the creatures parents. You will make a family offspring with certain traits based on instructions you receive. Since the family of offspring will come from the same set of parents the offspring will be siblings. You can think of the instructions as codes for passing down traits. Part of code will come from parent 1 and the other part of the code will come from parent 2 just like a real offspring. In your notes book on page 41 you'll see in column 1 that instructions from parent 1 are first followed by instructions for parent 2. Now I'll look at my parent 1 instruction card and find matching symbols then I'll look at my parent 2 instruction card find the matching symbol. If I look in column 2 I can see which body and parent color my creature will have. For example my parent 1 has the and sign. My parent 2 also has the and sign. So I'm going to find that in my that those symbols in my column and I'm going to make a check mark in column 3 so I remember that I will give my creature this trait. Remember sometimes offspring show a similar trait to one parent but sometimes they don't. It all depends on the instructions they inherit. The particular combination of instructions cause each creature to inherit the traits they have. First you'll figure out all the traits their creature offspring will have and make check marks next to each trait in your notebook. Then you will make your offspring creature out of place. The creature should have all the traits that parents listed on the notebook. You'll keep the photo of the creature parent projected of course so you guys can see it while you build your offspring. I hope you guys are ready just remember we are trying to figure out the question why do offsprings have similar traits to their parents but not always see each other. By comparing creature offspring that are siblings we may get some new ideas that will help us answer these questions. So once you guys are done with your creatures we're going to sit down and make observations of the traits of their offspring and we're going to compare their similarities and variations of that offspring. Remember when traits are similar the creatures receive the same instruction for this trait. When traits are different the creature receives a different instruction for that trait. The creature offspring inherit instruction from both parents. Inherit guys means to give something that is passed down. The creature parents reproduce to create the offspring. To reproduce is to make an offspring. So you're going to see these two creatures and based off your instructions you're going to make the creatures offspring. I hope you guys are ready let me know if you have any questions. Just love!
