The podcast episode discusses the film "Olds," which is an updated version of Shakespeare's Othello. The host explains that the film revolves around a scarf that is used as a symbol of betrayal and leads to a series of tragic events. The host introduces the main characters and reveals that the protagonist, Odin, becomes convinced that his girlfriend, Desi, is cheating on him with his best friend, Michael. This belief is fueled by lies told by Hugo, the son of the basketball coach. The scarf, given to Desi by Odin, becomes a point of contention and ultimately leads to Desi's murder by Odin and his subsequent suicide. The host concludes by discussing the significance of the scarf in the film and encourages listeners to watch it themselves. Hey, hey, hey! Welcome to this week's episode of the Think About the Scarf of Death in Olds film. Crazy right? Yeah, I know. Anywho, as most of you know, the voice coming out of your speakers right now is your very own, Amijah Marshall. And if you didn't, make sure you hit the subscribe button to see what's in store for next week's episode. You wouldn't want to miss. Let's get right into it. I know what you're all wondering, what does she mean by Scarf of Death or was the scarf used as a form of strangulation? If it's not a strangulation, you're, drum roll please, incorrect. But stay tuned to find out the real meaning behind the Scarf of Death. Okay, so let's get into the film itself. For those who doesn't know, Olds film is a 2001 updated version of William Shakespeare's very own Othello. This film was set in an upper class setting to grab young audiences attention. The director, Tim Blake Nelson, did a phenomenal job with this film. Before we get into a short clip, I want to introduce you to the main characters for a better understanding of not only the clip, but the film itself. As I've mentioned before, Olds is for a younger audience. The main setting was a high school with a basketball team. The first character I would like to get into is Odin James. He was known as the star of the team. He had a significant other by the name of Desi. Odin's love for Desi was out of this world. Hugo, however, was the son of the basketball coach, which caused there to be a lot of tension and jealousy floating around. Michael was also a main character of the film. He was like a best friend to Desi and both a best friend and brother and one to Odin. Everything was going great until things suddenly took a turn. Let's get into a short clip from the film that relates to the Scarf of Death. I want to bring it to your guys' attention. Hey, Dean. Can you not wear that scarf I gave you? I haven't really thought about it. Can I see it real quick? Yeah. I'll keep it right here. I thought you lost it. No, it's here somewhere. You know, my mom gave me that scarf when she got real sick. She said to make sure I give it to somebody. I said, I'm not going to give it to anybody. I'm not going to give it to anybody. She said to make sure I give it to somebody very special. And to keep our love right. I'm sure it was up around here somewhere. Can you look somewhere? Look, she'll find it later. Come on, I'll help you. No, find it later. Right now, I really want to talk about Michael. You know that he deserves to play. And he's your best friend. That's all that he talks about. I really need you to find that scarf. And I said I'll find it later. Hey, Dean. You'd never give out no love behind my back now, would you? I mean, maybe I'm not enough for you. You know, especially with you being all hot and shit. What? Oh, you know what I'm talking about. Hey, and you've got to see this girl in action. Are you kidding me? That's really shitty. You're okay, but check this. If you were virgin like you said you were, how come when you're doing it, you're acting all freaky and stuff? I could do whatever I want with you. We need to be here right now. No, Em, Em. I don't think you do either. That is not what I meant. What the hell is wrong with you? Look, let's just find the scarf, okay? Emily's going to help us look. But what if Emily doesn't want to help? I think that you should go. Where is my scarf? I don't know. You lost it. No, I'll find it later. Get some balls and act. No, I'm not. Michael, you're the only person I've ever been with and you're the only person I want to be with. And if you want to be with me, don't ever talk to me like that again, ever. I'm always straight with you, Em. Alright, so now that that's over, let's elaborate. Since we have no visual, we can only go by what we hear, but I'm here to help you understand fully. In the beginning, Desi is opening the door for Odin. They exchange love with kisses. But Odin cannot resist asking her where's the scarf he gifted her with. What you guys don't know is a bug has gotten into Odin's ear. Odin's ear? Odin's ear? What you guys don't know is a bug has gotten into Odin's ear that Desi has been cheating on him. You want to guess who she's getting accused of cheating with? Yep, you heard it right, Michael. But wait, would you like to guess who told Odin this lie? You go. Yeah, go ahead and get your gas out. This isn't even the worst. It gets worse. In this clip, we also hear what the scarf meant to Odin. But before we get to that, he also reminds her that his mom gave him that scarf when she got very sick and told him to give it to someone special. Now, before I spill the beans, I want to say if you do plan on watching this film, you might just want to turn off the podcast. But for those who are hopping out of their seats, check this out. Not only did Hugo tell Odin that Desi and Michael were messing around, but he got Emily involved. A character I didn't mention to you guys. Okay, okay, I get it. My apologies. But okay, listen to me. Hugo got Emily, which is Desi's roommate, to steal the scarf out of their room to make Odin think Michael has it. That is what Hugo told Odin. Still confused? Trust me, I know. I told you, it gets worse. Let's get into why I really call it the Scarf of Death. Now that you know where it came from and the significance behind it. Without the scarf in Desi's possession, Odin began to believe that Michael indeed did have the scarf and Desi was lying about not knowing where it was. This is what really set it off to believe Desi and Michael were having a secret affair. Just a warning. I'm not going to warn you too many more times, though. There's a lot of spoilers in this podcast today, so tune out if you plan on watching this mouth-dropping film. Anywho, Odin's love for Desi was way too strong for him to let her live. He let his anger take over so he plans to kill Desi. Not only Desi, but he wanted Michael dead as well. So guess what? He strangled her to death. After Desi was killed, the truth came out instantly about the scarf. Emily told Odin that Hugo brought her to take the scarf. Next thing you know, boom, Desi is shot by Hugo. Odin then knew all of this was a lie. The cheating was never real. Odin could not live with the mistake he made by killing the love of his life. So he killed himself as well. Before we go any further, we have an advertisement sponsored by Mr. Mess Be Gone. Welcome back! So to spice things up, we're here with my great friend, Jamel Duncan. He agreed to come on for a little Q&A on this film. So, Jamel, tell us, after your first time watching Odin's film, what were your thoughts? Wow, that was lots of words, man. I didn't expect that to happen. I was like, I don't know what to say. I was like, I didn't expect that to happen. But I can't admit, this is one of my favorites. It was. Speaking of favorites, which character was yours? Uh, I would have to give it to Odin. He is such a star and a great friend despite the ending. It was also very genuine. I mean, knowing his mom told him to give the scarf to someone special and he chose to give it to Desi was very sweet and showed how much he both loved and adored her. I agree. I'm glad you mentioned the scarf. How do you truly feel about Emily stealing the scarf from Desi? Yeah, that was the root of the problem. I feel like she did it to try to prove her love for Hugo, but at the end of the day Desi was her friend. That was very wrong and unloyal of her. I wonder if she had to take it. What would have been Hugo's way of trying to convince Odin that Desi and Michael were having an affair? I mean, there's absolutely no telling. It's Hugo. He had really caused some damage. I left a couple things off for the audience. Can you tell the audience why Hugo was so jealous of Odin? Hugo was very jealous of Odin and it was obvious. Hugo didn't like Odin sharing more of a father-son relationship with his dad, which was the coach. He also was jealous of the fame and attention Odin constantly got. Correct. Hugo felt as if it was doves versus an eagle. One last question before you go. Did you think it was necessary for Odin to kill himself? Odin had already been surrounded by lies and people who meant no good to him in disguise. He made a terrible mistake and killed the love of his life. If he hadn't killed himself, he would have remained in jail for the rest of his life. At that point, he probably felt like he had nothing else to live for. So, I do understand why he did it and yes, I feel it was necessary. You have a great point. Well, that's all the questions I have for you. Thank you for being our special guest today. You were amazing. We hope to have you back soon and we wish you well. Enough of that. I want you to understand why the scarf makes the movie. Without the scarf in the movie, the director and the writer of the film would have to switch a couple things around. And the way this film is, nothing needs to be changed. It also relates to the theme of watch who you trust. Odin was really believing everything Hugo was telling him. Desi also trusted Emily and Emily went behind her back and stole from her, something so valuable. Even though the scarf may not mean anything to you guys, it meant a lot to Odin and Desi. The scarf revealed a lot. It revealed how much Odin loved Desi by giving it to her. It revealed Odin's true friends and it also revealed Desi's true friends. Would you believe the scarf led to murders and suicides? That was insane. I feel like I've got you all to the point where you're ready to watch the film yourself. So, with that being said, I will leave a link in the comments to the film for you guys to enjoy with your side of popcorn. That's all I have for you guys today. We dug into the film but mainly discussed why I consider the scarf a scarf of death. I hope you all enjoyed. If you think you enjoyed this week's podcast, I know for sure you'll enjoy next week's podcast where we bring Kanye West on to tell us about his psychotic episodes. The West coming out of your speakers right now is your very own Amijah Marshall and that's a wrap.
