The US Supreme Court has overturned the landmark decisions of Roe v. Wade and Casey, ending constitutional protections for abortion. This has negatively affected millions of women, forcing them to carry unwanted pregnancies or travel for unsafe abortions. The restrictions and bans on abortion have actually increased the number of abortions, while also putting women's lives at risk. The lack of bodily autonomy has long-term physical and mental health consequences for both mothers and children. Women should have the right to make decisions about their own bodies, and the government should not interfere. The opposing pro-life argument fails to consider the lives and well-being of women. The landmark decision from the United States Supreme Court which has ended constitutional protections for abortion. Roe versus Wade and Casey have been overruled. Roe versus Wade is overruled. It overturned Roe versus Wade and ended a woman's constitutional right to an abortion. Just over a year ago the Supreme Court made a decision to overturn Roe versus Wade. This decision has negatively impacted millions of women throughout the US and is expected to affect many more. With the restrictions put on the procedure in multiple states, along with the complete ban on other states, women have been forced to carry unwanted children or travel around the US to have an abortion. While the overall goal of individual states restricting or banning access was to lower the number of abortions, their plan was actually counterintuitive. Since Roe versus Wade was overturned, the number of legal abortion in the US has risen, just merely not in the states that have banned it. I spoke to a fellow University of Iowa student about her views on the overturning of Roe versus Wade, to which she said, I think it's ridiculous that the government's trying to control women and their bodies. People are still going to get abortions if they want them, that they're just going to get unsafe ones that aren't by doctors, and it'll ultimately cause unnecessary deaths. Before abortion bans were enacted in states across the country, there were roughly 300,000 deaths annually from childbirth. This number is expected to rise by 24% after the overturn of Roe versus Wade, as those with medical complications such as ectopic pregnancies or miscarriages no longer have access to this life-saving procedure. Aside from using abortion as a means to prioritize your life over a fetus, another reason people get an abortion is simply because their current life circumstances, such as age, financial situation, career, or just having an unplanned pregnancy. As such, I decided to interview my sister, who has not only had a child, but has also had an abortion and miscarriage, about why she chose not to have her baby. I got an abortion when I was 19 years old. I was brand new to the military, and I didn't want to be a mother. I was very young. I had no money. I would have been a single mother, so that's what was best for me. I didn't want to get kicked out of the military, so I made that decision to get an abortion. While Chloe was lucky enough to get an abortion when she felt it was right, this is no longer the case for many Americans. This lack of bodily autonomy has been shown by the American Psychological Association to cause physical and mental health problems for the mother and child in the long run. They also discovered that the child is more likely to suffer from social issues and develop less strong of a connection to their mother compared to their peers. They also found that women who were denied abortions suffered from severe financial hardships for years to come, and were more likely to have lower credit, more bankruptcies and evictions, more debt, and were more likely to live off government assistance. Overall, women should have the rights of their own bodies, despite the one that is developing inside of them. Women should have the right to determine their own path, which is none of the government's business. At the end of the day, no one is running around telling men what they can and cannot do with their bodies, so why do women not get the same treatment? The opposing side considers themselves pro-life, but what about women dying and losing their livelihood makes them pro-life? Consider whose life is truly a safe here and go out and make a change. Thank you.
